The president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, explained that European citizens "deserve a full and detailed explanation".

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, will appear soon before the MEPs to discuss the use of personal data of users, after the massive leak of information to the company Cambridge Analytica, reported today the President of the European Parliament (EP), Antonio Tajani.

"The founder and CEO of Facebook have accepted our invitation and will be in Brussels as soon as possible, we hope that next week, to meet with the leaders of the political groups and with the president and the rapporteur of the Committee on Civil Liberties and Justice," Tajani said in a statement.

Tajani explained that European citizens "deserve a full and detailed explanation" and has opined that the fact that the founder of Facebook has agreed to appear before parliamentarians "is a step in the right direction to restore confidence."

He explained that the conference of EP presidents has decided to organize a hearing with Facebook and other affected parties, which will give the MEPs of the Freedoms Committee and other committees of Parliament the opportunity to make "an in-depth analysis of the related aspects with the protection of personal data.”

Tajani: "Internet giants must be responsible for the content they publish".

In particular, Tajani said, "special emphasis will be given to the potential impact on electoral processes in Europe."

The EP president stressed that the priority of the Eurochamber is to ensure the proper functioning of the digital market, with a high protection of personal data, effective rules on copyright and the protection of consumer rights.

"Internet giants must be responsible for the content they publish," including false and illegal news, Tajani said.
