After Google, YouTube and Facebook, Twitter Is All Set To Deal with Misleading Content

$

Twitter will soon start labeling and at times removing the doctored or manipulated content including videos, photos and audios that can mislead users.

The company introduced new set of rules that do not allow sharing synthetic and altered content which may misguide anyone or cause any kind of harm. However, manipulated content that might not harm anyone is expected to get a warning label.

However, one of the most complicated things is to decide what can cause harm. It is not always possible to pin point and many of the content might come under the gray area.

Twitter, in a blog post, said identifying what could harm is a difficult process and there could be mistakes initially but they are determined to bring positive changes through it.

The micro-blogging platform takes the risk to the safety of a person or group seriously, that might result in mass violence or unrest at a vast level. A threat to the privacy of people or their freedom of expression also comes under harm that Twitter is trying to deal with.

After the manipulation in the last US elections, all the tech giants like Google, Facebook and Instagram are on high alert and under pressure to avoid any kind of influence in 2020 US elections.

Recently, YouTube also clarified its policies regarding political manipulation and will ban deepfake videos about elections. On the other hand, Facebook is also putting up efforts to make the platform secure during elections.

The success of Twitter policies, just like hate speech and abuse, will be measured how well they are implemented by the company. Critics are of the opinion that even after putting the rule in place, the practical implementation can be unsteady and slow.

It is difficult to control the misinformation of social media platforms, it spread quickly. Facebook has hired third-party fact-checkers who for three years will debunk the false stories on the platform. Though it has been effective to some extent but the misinformation genie is still out of hands.

Twitter wanted a review of users on its such efforts for which a survey in six languages was posted. Around 6,500 responses were received from all over the world in which the majority said that misleading tweets should be labeled. However, there has not been a strong stance on whether the tweets should be removed or not.

Google Chrome will soon put an end to disruptive ads during video content

Internet users are often bombarded with a plethora of advertisements that usually (if not always) hamper their online experience. Of course, there are some developers who put in an effort to balance the number of ads that are shown alongside their content but plenty don’t care – forcing the visitors to use an ad blocker for seamless internet browsing.

For the benefit of its users, Google integrated a built-in ad blocker on its Chrome browser in 2018. Through this tool, the web developers were forced to comply with the ‘ad regulations’ or have their ads blocked automatically by the browser.

And now, Google is also extending the feature to videos.

According to Google, the group affiliated with Better Ads Standards have issued a new set of rules for ads that come up during video content. The results were based on a survey from 45,000 consumers worldwide who said that they find ‘non-skippable’ ads that come before a video disruptive.

The group of internet users also agreed that ads appear during the mid of videos interrupt their experience. Images or text-based ads that appear while the video is playing and cover more than 20% of the video content can also be annoying for the users.

The Coalition for Better Ads has given website owners the next four months to stop using any of the above-mentioned ads in their video content. The website owners who fail to abide by the rules will have to risk losing their advertising altogether.

Chrome is also enforcing the same policies from August 5th 2020 and will stop showing ads on the specific sites if disruptive ads continue to appear in any country.

Interestingly, the Coalition for Better Ads has issued a special warning for Google-owned YouTube.

Recently, it hit the news that Samsung is using a Storage Cleaner app in their phones that is sourced from a shady Chinese company known as Qihoo 360. The company is known to be involved in stealing user data.

The news spread like a wildfire in the Android community and the smartphone manufacturer finally had to release a statement mentioning how much assistance they are taking from the Qihoo 360. In the statement, the company clarified that they are only sending generic data to the sourcing company and other than that, the whole process of scanning and removing junk is done by themselves.

To be on the safe side, Samsung has reportedly removed the Storage Cleaner app from Device Care app from its smartphones that support Android 10, 9 and 8.1 operating system. According to a Reddit user and developer, Samsung has updated The Device Care app but didn't mention anything related to Qihoo 360 removal in its change catalog.

The development has been spotted by the APK analysis by Javkhlan K., who explained that the library sourced from Qihoo 360 is now removed from the Samsung. In short, you do not have to worry about releasing your data to an unreliable company anymore.

TikTok is Expected To Introduce Instagram-Like Profile Redesign

$

0
It seems like TikTok is planning to remain on the roll as according to the recent developments, the company now plans to improve the user experience with a new profile design which not-so-surprisingly looks like an imitation of Instagram profiles.

As first reported by Taylor Lorenz from the New York Times, the redesign primarily includes shifting of avatar and follower count to the left, while making sure that there is more space and focus on the user’s bio this time around. She further shared the screenshot of the latest development in one of her tweets.

Later, a spokesperson from TikTok also confirmed that the developers are currently testing new ideas of profile redesign and more functionalities, only to make sure that users are able to engage with their audience on a more personalized level.

Although looking at the profile redesign, one might say that TikTok is just behaving like another tech company trying to copy all the trending features, however, in the social media world, they are not alone and neither such a practice has occurred for the first time. In fact, prior to them, Instagram itself borrowed the idea of introducing “Stories” from Snapchat long ago and sometimes they do also take a hint of new features from its competitors.

Moreover, Facebook is also keeping an eye on the fast-growing app and is currently under the process of testing a video editing tool in Brazil with the name of Reels - that will be based on TikTok’s best features like speed adjustment and borrowing audio from other videos.

Maybe TikTok knows how to be more entertaining for its users with such small changes as after all, the company has achieved the landmark of 1.5 billion downloads last November and was even the third most downloaded non-gaming app in 2019 as well.

But, one certainly cannot predict if giving an Instagram-like appearance of profiles will work as a new wonder for TikTok or not.

Dark Mode is really becoming a thing these days as evident from the dark theme release from a lot of social media and tech giants.

Google Translator, as we all know, is one of the major product by Google, which is also on the line to release their dark mode for both the platforms. The version 6.5 of Google Translator comes with a dark mode that will be available on both Android and Apple devices.

We have seen the dark mode coming on Android for a long time and now it is in the news. Although the dark mode is not as expected by the users, it is not the worst. According to 9to5Google the dark theme is not like Google’s other dark themes and the text color is also not aesthetically amazing, but we are expecting it to be better in the future.

This new version of Google Translator is also available for iOS 13 users, which is no doubt a more polished version.

The dark mode has not rolled out to general users yet, but it will soon be available on all devices.

The speculation around Facebook Watch confuses all!

$

0
Facebook officially announced the launch of its Watch feature in 2017. However, even after a span of more than two years, not many users are aware of its use. In fact, if you also don’t know what ‘Watch’ is, you are not alone!

Initially, Facebook introduced the Watch video service to showcase original scripted content, in both – long and short forms. However, recent news by The Information confirms that the social media giant is planning to pull back on many of its original content. Reportedly, Facebook is also giving up bidding on live sporting events.

Unfortunately, the recent change in strategy is confusing the massive user base of Facebook. Additionally, the Watch is available as a tab on Facebook’s menu. This means that there is no standalone platform for the service like YouTube offers. Lack of mobile app and/or a channel to stream the content on Watch also makes many users reluctant.

The same concerns were reported to Facebook nearly a year ago by media outlets. At that time, the social media giant had responded that over 140 million users are logging into their video service daily. However, Facebook is home to nearly 2.5 billion monthly active users. This clearly signifies that the majority is not aware of the feature offered by Facebook.

Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg also briefly mentioned Facebook Watch during its Q4 earnings call and said that the feature is meant to enhance the value of its flagship app – and not as a standalone app.

He further added that the primary motive to add Facebook Watch feature was to give the users a centralized platform to watch videos. He also explained that this would limit the users from watching videos on their Facebook News Feed and keep the former for social interaction – like it was comprehended for. Facebook is trying hard to give tough time to YouTube with its Watch tab, but it appears the social media behemoth needs a lot of time to really come forward as a strong competitor to Google-owned video hosting platform.

Facebook will be increasing its previous $1 billion content budget to $1.4 this year. However, the company claims to invest more effort and resources on original talk shows and licensing clips from network television as well as sports league.

Actress Jessica Biel also took to her Instagram handle and complained about the lack of awareness surrounding Facebook Watch. She said that many of her friends find it difficult to catch her series Limetown that is being published on the Facebook Watch service due to naivety.

Facebook also decided to cancel Limetown along with another series, "Sorry for your Loss" that stars Elizabeth Olsen.

Mark Zuckerberg’s brainchild also tried to partner with online creators for original content. However, the majority of the creators complained that Facebook Watch was paying them very less when compared to YouTube.

Google Maps is all set to surprise its users with new updates on its 15th birthday

$

0
Google recently announced that it’s going to surprise its users by redesigning the Google Maps as a gift to all users on its 15th birthday.

Google Maps is no longer going to be an app to check the routes only. It will be more like a hub of information where you can get to learn about new spots, nearby points, community tips, and whatnot.

Google will be focusing on five main categories in its redesign: Explore, Contribute, Updates, Saved, and Commute. This will be a major change for users who are used to see only Explore, Commute and For You tabs in the app before.

Apart from these amazing changes, another new feature ‘Live View’ is coming to the Google Maps that will be introduced in the coming months. This new feature involves the use of augmented reality in it that will help users to get the directions in the real-world while keeping your phone in your hands. Also, users will also get information about public transit in the coming updates.

The logo of Google Maps is also changing to a new one that only looks like a pin. Here is all the information you are looking for.

1. Google’s New Logo

The new logo appears like a pin, which is much more relevant to Google Maps if you pay attention. It is the first time that Google has ever updated the new Maps icon. Here's a short timeline of how Google Map's logo has evolved.

2. Introduction to New Categories

Before this new update, Google Maps only consisted of Explore, Commute and For You sections, but now you will see some more new features including Saved, Updates and Contribute sections. You can also add restaurant reviews etc. in the ‘Your Contributions’ section.

3. Live View

This new augmented reality infused feature by Google Maps is the new cool of the century. With this new feature, you will be able to walk through the direction with the phone in your hand. Live View will not show you any turn-by-turn directions, but just the distance and the way you need to walk.

4. Information about Public Transportation

In the coming months, Google Maps will introduce more information about public transportation as well. So, if you commute through public transport each day – this is going to be a very important update for you!

You will get to know about how crowded a train is, the temperature of the train, public transit lines, entrances, and seating along with information related to security on trains.

Celebrating the mark, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet/Google, revealed that:
"One of the next frontiers for [Google] Maps will be to help the billions of people who live without a physical address get a digital one. These open-source digital addresses, called Plus Codes, are based on latitude and longitude coordinates, rather than a street address, and can be used freely by anyone. With a digital address, more people will be able to access things like banking and emergency services, receive personal mail and deliveries, and help people find and patronize their businesses. It’s still in early days, but we’re excited about the potential.
In short, Google is trying to become one-stop for all your travel needs. No matter if you are searching for a new place, reviews, booking appointments or more – you will get all the information on Google Maps.

Pinterest Sees Major Gains in its Best Quarter Yet, The Content Discovery Platform Boasts 335 Million MAU

$

If you had asked just a few years ago who the major players were going to be in the world of social media, few if any people would have assumed that Pinterest would end up being where it is today. The reason for this is that you just generally don’t really think of Pinterest in that light, and a big part of this has to do with the fact that Pinterest generally did not have that many users back in the day, and over the past few years it has made some incredible progress all of which has transformed the way the content discovery network is perceived in this modern day and age.

Most of the time when you look into Pinterest you would be impressed with their growth, but the numbers they are showing for the last quarter (i.e. Q4 2019) are truly something to behold. If we start with the total number of users that they have, it’s plain to see that things have definitely been moving in the right direction. For one thing, the total number of users has gone up by a whopping 26%, now totaling at around 335 million monthly active users in total.

Pinterest Boasts 335 Million MAU in Q4 2019 report

These aren’t just empty numbers either, the company is earning more money as well. While the jump in total users is up by 26%, the increase in total revenue is coming up to just short of 400 million dollars, which shows a 46% increase from last year!

Pinterest also highlighted its global average revenue per user (ARPU) in its quarterly report. In Q4 2019 Pinterest's ARPU was $1.22.

It’s pretty clear that Pinterest has been making all of the right moves as of late, moves that are undoubtedly going to shape the way we look at the social media platform in the years to come. If things keep increasing at this rate, the juggernaut that is Facebook might just end up having a real run for its money!

Twitter Boasts 152 Million Daily Active Users in its Q4 2019 Report

Twitter is one of the best social media platforms where you will find genuine celebrities, politicians and journalists. After Facebook, Twitter is the most famous social network for content distribution.

Twitter gained 152 million monetizable daily users on its platform by the end of 2019. Twitter says that the spike is because of the AI tweet recommendations that put ‘more relevant’ tweets in users timeline.

The number of daily users on Twitter grew from 145 million users in 2018 to 126 million users in 2017. Twitter says that mostly it was because of the improvement in the products such as showing relevant tweets in notifications or on timelines on Twitter, which lead to generating more users to the platform.

Twitter Boasts 152 Million Daily Active Users in its Q4 2019 Report

Twitter is expected to grow more as compared to Facebook and Snapchat, if it continues to move at this pace. Twitter only shows tweets on the user’s timeline that they might be the most interested in. If a user is following a few accounts, then their feed might be filled with likes, replies, and related stuff by the people they follow. Hence, you will get to see what you are expecting to see.

Considering all of this, Twitter’s machine learning model has the capability to grow more than other social media platforms.

Apart from user growth, Twitter also reported an increase in revenue this quarter. For the first time ever, Twitter was able to collect revenue of about $1 billion.

Last year, Twitter faced some problems to collect revenue due to the bugs that influenced the number of ads on the platform. Let’s see what Twitter has got for us in the future.

Facebook Joins YouTube & LinkedIn, Warns Clearview AI To Stop Scraping Images From Their Platforms

$

Not very long ago, Clearview AI - a facial recognition software, became a part of severe criticism for matching people’s faces with billions of images scraped off social media platforms and sharing them with security agencies.

While this did put the privacy of all internet users at huge risk, Facebook has come together along with YouTube, LinkedIn and payment service Venmo to stop the company from harvesting images of users present on their platform in order to identify people for their work with law enforcement agencies.

Facebook has been very blunt in their demand and stated that accessing, scraping or using information available of its flagship site and Instagram’s users violates the company’s privacy policy and the New York based start-up should stop invading.

Moreover, Facebook is not the first one to put up such a demand from the startup. In fact, prior to this incident, Venmo has already sent a cease-and-dentist letter to Clearview AI.

According to Venmo spokesman Justin Higgs, by scraping Venmo, Clearview AI is their terms of service and as the company works actively to limit or block any kind of activity that violates their important policies, Clearview might soon have to face the consequences.

Further, Google’s own video service giant YouTube sent another similar letter and revealing the details of it, YouTube spokesman Alex Joseph said in a statement that YouTube’s Terms of Service doesn’t allow collecting data to be used for identifying a person. As Clearview has publicly admitted to conduct violence of a similar sort, therefore the company had to send a cease and desist letter.

In response to all the letters and criticism, Clearview CEO Hoan Ton-That said their company relies on the First Amendment right for collecting 3 Billion open images, which the company uses to date. He even told CBS that Clearview AI’s software is developed in such a way that they only take information that is publicly available and then index it for further usage.

Hoan has also been asking the critics to trust him because this kind of technology is only being used by law enforcement agencies to identify criminals.

With the legal battle expected to rise, Clearview attorney Tor Ekeland gave another surprising statement that the company operates pretty much like Google’s search engine.

Well, whatever the case is, there is one thing for sure that the future of Clearview AI itself is also at risk.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s head, recently announced a new feature to be introduced in the ‘following’ tab. The ‘following’ tab shows all the accounts followed by a user, but you will also find two sections there. One section with the name ‘least interacted with’ and the other section with the name ‘most shown in feed’.

Both of these sections will show accounts that users have least interacted with or have seen much on their newsfeed in the past 90 days. This new feature will help users to remove unwanted followers from their list in just a few steps.

We all use Instagram and are aware of how difficult it is to check each and every account, especially if you have a long list. If you are planning to clear out your follower’s list, then it will turn into a hectic task, but not anymore. Thanks to Instagram, you can now easily perform an ‘unfollow spree’ on your account.

Along with the release of this feature, Instagram’s Head also highlighted how Instagram rolls out new features on the app. He mentioned that Instagram's first test features by rolling them out on a small percentage of users, then checking its effect on them.

This is another new update by Instagram, which is as amazing as the one involving removing likes from the posts. Although this feature is not available on all US users, this update is available in seven countries already.

Hence, moving on to make the experience even better, analysis from the development side suggests that the company is working on a “Today” feed, which might just be make exploring the best-handpicked trends easier for users.

This additional feature has first been spotted by Jane Manchun Wong, who is known already known for reverse-engineering apps to identify hidden features and security vulnerabilities. According to her most recent tweet, there is a screenshot of Today feed from Pinterest showing how it might be based on best-handpicked trends from around the world, while giving the user the chance to gather the right inspiration.

Zooming into the screenshot, you can see boards based on a large variety ranging from Best of Sundance 2020 to Antique Restoration and Ceramic Lamps, etc. This together hints of a much-needed change and variety that can help a lot of Pinterest users and even non-users in looking out for things they always want from the platform.

Although the exploration-based trends does sound like going the Instagram way but in the end, Pinterest always has been the leader when it comes to providing user unique ideas in the DIY category or things like interior design. So, this move definitely has the potential to increase engagement in a number of ways.

The current development also seems to be a decent response to two of the major challenges that Pinterest has on its hands already as the platform is trying hard to improve its average revenue per user and reach more global audiences.

Google Chrome to Crack Down on Insecure Mixed Content Downloads

$

One thing that Google has been focusing on quite a bit recently has involved making the internet a more secure place, and part of this has to do with cracking down on insecure pages that use an HTTP URL as opposed to one that is more secure and has an HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) at the beginning of the web address. This is done so that the average user does not unwittingly end up on a web page that could potentially end up infecting their computer with some kind of malware or virus, the kind of thing that can really impact how efficiently you would be able to surf the internet all in all as well as make it difficult for you to keep your personal data secure.

With all of that being said, simply informing users about the dangers of HTTP unsecured web pages is not enough and this is mainly because of the fact that when it comes to secured pages sometimes the content that you download from these pages is not going to be as secure as you would have initially thought and this makes it risky for you to download in the first place.

The fact of the matter is that Google Chrome is aware of this issue, and it calls downloads that are not secure but come from a secure location “mixed content downloads”. The company will now be cracking down on these downloads as well to further secure the average internet user and prevent any malicious actors from being able to take advantage of the lack of knowledge that these users are dealing with.
"Starting in Chrome 82 (to be released April 2020), Chrome will gradually start warning on, and later blocking, these mixed content downloads.", announced Joe DeBlasio from Chrome Security team, in a post on Chromium Blog
This crackdown will start with a warning to Chrome users but Google will gradually start blocking these downloads altogether as well to force website developers to secure the downloads as much as possible before the average user has the chance to access them.

Windows users have always reported the inconvenience while using Facebook’s app on their phones, which is why Facebook has taken the bold step now. The company is discontinuing its app for Windows 10, which will take place on Feb 28, 2020, as reported by MSPU.

It’s not a surprise that Facebook is planning to do it as the app has already caused some trouble for Windows users, as according to users review Facebook fails to update the app on regular basis, plus a lot of users complain about crashing problem, while some says the app is "Buggy, slow to point of being unusable". For now, the company is sending out warning messages to the Microsoft app users so they can shift from the Windows 10 app to a better one.

We expected this, but we didn’t expect it to happen so fast. Apart from it, Facebook is not planning to bring a replacement for the app any soon.

The personalized email that Facebook sent to all its users using the app on the Windows app included that although the app will discontinue, the users will be able to gain access to all of their friends and favorite Facebook features through its web version (facebook.com).

Surprisingly Facebook has no plans to discontinue its Messenger app from Microsoft store, users can access Messenger through the Facebook website after logging in through the www.messenger.com or they can also download the updated desktop app of Messenger.

Are you satisfied with Facebook’s decision?

The ‘Dark Mode’ is one of the most anticipated features for mobile phone users. Besides eliminating eye strain when using the phone at night, the dark UI consumes very less power and reduces the distracting white spaces on webpages to improve focus.

Several apps and services such as Messenger, Google Chrome, and Instagram have introduced the dark mode for their respective platforms. And now finally, WhatsApp is ready to enter the arena as well by launching the feature for its Apple users.

The development regarding the dark mode for WhatsApp have been making the rounds for some time now with reports that the Facebook-owned company is testing the service for both – iOS and Android. However, it looks like iPhone users will get the bite of the feature very soon as a new beta version of WhatsApp for iOS with dark mode enabled is available. This signifies that the feature will be available for all iPhones soon.

Unfortunately, Mark Zuckerberg’s entity took a very long time to integrate the dark mode in its service as all major iOS apps have already been updated to include the feature. But as they say ‘better late, then never’ and we hope WhatsApp updates iPhones (as well as Android phones) with the dark mode soon.

Beta versions for both – Android and iOS are available. However, iOS users have to join the WhatsApp TestFlight program that is reportedly fully booked.

The Gigabyte driver is used for a ransomware attack, as identified by the Sophos, a cyber security company. The driver helps the attackers to enter into the Windows system and then disabling the security software.

Gigabyte driver had a security flaw, which is why the driver was abandoned by the company as well. The hackers are continuously exploiting the driver and allowing them to enter into the user’s computer in no time.

Basically, the hacker can enter into the device and create a second driver that kills all the files and products of the security software and attacking the device without any alarm.

The ransomware is called RobinHood that demands an amount from the user to unlock their files. In case the user does not pay, the note reads that the ransom amount has increased by $10,000.

Nobody knows when the issue will be resolved and if users will be able to restore their files without paying dollars to the hackers. Let’s hope for the best!
