Microsoft admits to be wrong about open-source

$

After being critical about open source and Linux, Microsoft finally embraced the system in 2012. In fact, former CEO Steve Ballmer deemed it as ‘cancerous’ back in 2001.

However, the company gave in to the rapidly growing popularity of Linux and adapted it to its full potential.

And today, the company’s president openly admits at a recent MIT event that they were on the wrong side of history when the open-source trend initiated. Luckily, the company changed its protocols and is now one of the biggest contributor to the open-source projects in the world – surpassing Facebook, Google, Apache, Docker, and many others.

It is also partnering with Canonical to bring Ubuntu to Windows 10 and acquired Xamarian to aid mobile app development while Github is responsible for code repository for developers.

The company has gradually integrated open source in many of its software in recent years. It is even shipping a full Linux kernel in a Windows 10 update is expected to release this month.

Moreover, Microsoft is partnering with open-source communities to create Power Toys for Windows 10. And if the company continues to follow a similar pattern – we can expect to see more efforts related to open-source by the multinational technological company.

Twitter Takes Down Custom Camera Captions Feature And The Bigger Photo Exhibition Format

$

It seems that Twitter is making corrections in its approach towards visual representation settings within its tweets. Last year, the platform introduced an updated Twitter Camera, that offered users a new way to include colorful caption panels to photos that were clicked via the native camera feature, and those photos were also displayed bigger in Twitter timelines.

Now, Twitter is making some changes in those updates, and the platform announced that it’s taking down these features. Twitter is also making some other changes to the native camera option. Twitter posted a tweet stating that users will now be able to include up to four photos that were clicked via the camera. You can now also reply and retweet with images and videos. However, you could already reply and retweet with images and videos, the platform has evidently altered the functionality of the native camera option.

The main change Twitter has introduced is that it has removed colorful caption panels and larger photo presentation format. The platform initially released the feature back in March 2019, and it seemed like a way for the platform to align with the extensive shift of individuals towards visual storytelling via the entire-screen, vertical representation of stories. Considering that Twitter is gradually enhancing its Stories options in Fleets, Twitter’s version of Stories, the platform probably may not necessarily need to do that in normal tweets anymore. The larger image presentation format might have sensed awkward within timelines for some Twitter users.

Considering the above reasons, it makes sense why Twitter removed these options. You may also note that Twitter acquired Chroma Labs during February of this year. Chroma Labs is a team lead by a former product manager at Facebook-owned Instagram and Chroma Labs specializes in Stories format. This may also be the reason for the decision to take down the exhibition style from regular Twitter posts, and rather focus on Fleets feature for these types of functioning.

This effect is perhaps quite minimal. For the platform to remove these options, that would likely recommend that these are not widely used by Twitter users, Twitter may have sensed a bit out of place for photos that were clicked via the native camera option anyway. We are also waiting for the Fleets to be rolled out to users across the world as Twitter is still testing the feature in some select markets.

Microsoft CEO Says That The "Permanent Work From Home" Decision Can Be Dangerous For The Corporate Culture

$

0
Finally, someone has opposed the idea of working from home and he is no other than Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella who has openly expressed his opinion regarding the new work culture during an interview with the New York Times.

According to him, the remote work strategy can lead to negative consequences for people including less social interaction and bad mental health.

Nadella believes that when employees go to an office or walk into a physical meeting, that interaction with other human beings is so important to stimulate the feeling of competitiveness, and satisfaction, which if not given can stop encouraging employees to do great things and even struggle with their own mental well being. There is a sense of connection which cannot be achieved virtually,

This is an interesting statement coming from Nadella as Microsoft was one of the first companies to allow their employees to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The CEO believes that moving forward with remote work culture would be like moving from one dogma to another dogma.

Nadella, during the interview further questioned that how does burnout looks like? What does mental health look like? And on top of it all, he asked what does connectivity and building community look like? Which was the exact point of his whole argument The CEO of Microsoft thinks that we are actually burning social capital which the world took years to build.

These comments from Nadella came out after the rival company Twitter decided to let employees work from home even after the coronavirus pandemic. The reason behind Twitter’s bold move has been the well-distributed workforce that is capable of working from anywhere and managing the platform well at home. Besides that Twitter took the decision with a mutual understanding of its employees.

The only employees that are required to go to the office are the ones who may have to maintain the company’s servers.

Despite all the arguments, on the business forefront, Microsoft has remained to be one of the very few companies that had to face “minimal net impact” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sales in the third quarter rose to 15% summing up to 35 billion and much of the credit for this success goes to the emerging use of cloud computing. The revenue of the personal computing segment also climbed 3% to 11 billion which was a surprise jump considering how the company wasn’t expecting to exceed its revenue target of $10.75 billion to $11.15 billion.

Microsoft is currently enjoying the wall street expected revenue of $33.4 billion and earnings per share of $1.26.

Google Chrome For Desktop Is Adding Several Security And Privacy Tools, The Most Significant Of Which Is The Safety Check Feature

$

0
Online safety and security have become one of the most significant concerns for each of us these days. This is important because hackers are always exploring new ways to hijack your devices and steal your data. Even though the Google Chrome is not the entirely safest browser, Google does deserve credit for taking its safety and security very actively. The latest update for Google’s Chrome browser proves this in spades.

The latest Google Chrome version will come with a lot of new privacy and security tools. The most significant tool among these new privacy and security features is the new safety check feature. The new safety check tool allows the users to get an overall look at their security and safety status in Google Chrome.

When the new M83 build of Google Chrome will be rolled out for public use, it will allow users to perform a security check right in the browser’s settings. When users will perform a safety check, the browser will display them a quick readout of how things stand. Although the new feature will provide you a macro look at your overall security, the browser will have a lot of other ways to ensure your browsing experience is safe without having to switch to another system.

With the new update, users will be able to easily find existing features like permission management and cookies. Google Chrome will automatically block third-party cookies by default while browsing. Chrome will do this by using incognito mode. Users will also be able to fine-tune this if they wish to.

You will see extensions organized under a new puzzle icon. This will allow the users to quickly find the extensions they have installed on their Google Chrome browser. However, users will also be able to decide to view certain extensions on the toolbar.

Google Chrome is also introducing a new Enhanced Safe Browsing feature which will take its security to the next level. The new feature will do so by proactively checking whether websites, media, downloads, and other items are secure or not.

The browser will use DNS-over-HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) for encrypting the procedure during a DNS (Domain Name Service) lookup. However, you should keep in mind that all the tools discussed above will be introduced in the desktop version of Google Chrome only. The company will not roll out these features for smartphone users. Users will have to wait until these features arrive at the mobile version of Google Chrome.

Google Chrome’s M83 update will be rolled out sometime soon, and it may take a few days or some weeks for the new update to come your way. Whenever the new update arrives, you should make sure that you upgrade to the latest version to enjoy the new safety features of Google Chrome.

Here Are Some Coronavirus Scams You Should Be Looking Out For (infographic)

Scams surrounding the coronavirus are actually very serious if you think about it and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that a lot of people are working from home now and the increased amount of time online is going to make it so that the likelihood of a scam being successful is now much higher than ever before. If you are an individual trying to protect yourself or you are a company that wants to make it so that scams don’t compromise the security of your precious data, it is imperative that you familiarize yourself with the kind of scams that are going around and how they might impact you if you’re not careful.

One really common scam has to do with facemasks. Basically any email that offers you bulk discounts on facemasks is probably going to be some kind of scam. If you see any mention of a cure to Covid-19 you can be sure that this is a scam as well, as any cure is going to end up on the news before it is sent to you in an email by some random person that you don’t even know.

Emails that ask for your information such as any kind of login details are also obvious scams, and they are mostly involved in phishing attempts. The government will not randomly contact you from an email, and if you want to be truly careful you should very closely check the email address that has been used to send you anything in particular. The reason behind this is that there are a lot of scams going around and you wouldn’t want yourself to end up embroiled in one as this could cause some serious financial losses for you if you’re not careful in every single way, shape or form. Take a look at the infographic below, created by Bullguard, for more insists.

Facebook New Profile Lock Feature Will Promote Women’s Safety

$

While the protection of innocent people is ostensibly the purview of governments and police agencies, the fact of the matter is that corporations need to step in as well, especially when you think about companies like Facebook which have become community spaces where people interact with one another, and spaces like this need to be regulated because of the fact that people’s safety can end up being at risk if you’re not careful about this sort of thing all in all.

The fact of the matter is that Facebook’s improved feature that is being rolled out in Asian markets is going to contribute quite a bit to the overall safety of women, so much so that you would be surprised at the benefits that can be obtained from things like this on a regular basis. The feature in question is basically a profile lock that can be used to prevent people that you’re not friends with on Facebook from accessing your photos as well as your profile picture and will prevent any such users from being able to see any of your activities on the platform. Initially, this feature was released as Profile Picture Guard and after users feedback Facebook is extending it to more areas to make users profile more secure and private from bad actors and strangers.

This will greatly reduce the instances of stalking as well as predatory behavior that a platform like Facebook unwittingly ended up facilitating. It is important for Facebook to take initiatives like this because of the fact that without these steps it would be more or less impossible for women to feel safe while using this platform which would put them at a disadvantage due to the reason that using social media is essential for a wide variety of reasons including finding a job and staying in touch with close friends and loved ones.

It is important to note that this feature is not going to be restricted to women. You will be able to use it regardless of what your gender may be, and this is the sort of aspect that is important because of the fact that while women are definitely more at risk than people of any other gender this doesn’t mean that they are the only people that suffer from harassment, stalking as well as other kinds of dangers on this social media platform.

This feature is going to be available to most if not all Indian and Bangladeshi Facebook users and it will be interesting to see what other features the social media platform introduces as well as whether or not this particular feature would actually make a difference.

Google Photos Includes Extra Controls For Image Album Sharing

$

Google is now making it easier for you to control who can view your shared photo albums. Google has added various extra controls in Google Photos to make it easier for users to control who views their most cherished memories. Now, whenever a user will want to share a Google Photos album with their friends or family members, the Google Photos app will prompt them to invite a particular individual or group of individuals to view user’s images and videos via their own Google accounts.

The new functionality of the Google Photos app builds on the direct sharing tool rolled out by Google during December. The direct sharing feature allows users to share one-off images and videos with their friends and family members. This direct sharing feature provides you and your loved ones a place to converse about those shared images and videos. Thanks to this newly introduced change, you will have extra control over who you want to share your albums with and who can view your shared albums.

Now, when you want to share an album with someone, the Google Photos app will prompt you to send an invitation to that specific person or group of persons. Once you have sent the invitation to a user, Google will allow that user to know via email. The user will receive an email about the invitation as well as an in-app notification. If that user accepts the invitation, they can view your shared image albums.

Google will also let users view the image album you shared with them via the ‘sharing’ tab. If you don’t know where the Sharing tab is located, you can find it at the bottom of the Google Photos app’s main interface. Then, you and your friends or family members who you have shared the image album with can use the album as one place to chat with one another.

Moreover, Google is allowing users to share an album even without the Google Photos app or a Google account. If you are a person who doesn’t have Google Photos or a Google Account, you can share your image albums through a link. Google is adding an option to share albums using a link for those with no Google account or Google Photos app. Users will have the option to enable or disable link sharing as they wish. Google also provides you an option to choose whether other users can contribute content to your shared image albums or not. When you will remove any user from a shared image album, any content such as images or videos that the user had added to the album will also disappear.

Google also clarified that the company has not designed the new functionality to replace the messaging applications we already use. Still, the company hopes that the new functionality will enhance sharing memories in the form of images and videos with your friends and family members in the Google Photos app. Google states that the company will release the direct album sharing feature to all users over the coming week. The feature may take some time to reach you, so be patient if your Google Photos app still defaults to the link-sharing feature.

YouTube Is Introducing A New Premium Ad Program Called YouTube Select

$

Google’s YouTube is now adding a new way to buy ads, and the company calls it YouTube Select. The company relaunched its premium ads program in the form of YouTube Select. The company made the announcement ahead of YouTube’s digital advertising Brandcast upfront in the upcoming month. The new announcement does not reflect an extensive modification in who can get their content monetized, which has been a charged topic at YouTube, Google’s video platform. However, we can say that this change is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reassure advertisers that they can safely promote and sponsor their products and services across YouTube’s platform.

Vishal Sharma, YouTube’s advertising vice president of product management published a blog post discussing the YouTube Select program. Sharma stated that YouTube Select is a unification and reimagination of YouTube’s existing solutions such as prime packs and Google Preferred, for premium advertisers. Prime packs provide you a selection of channels curated by YouTube around a specific trending theme such as beauty, cooking, music, or technology, etc. YouTube previously used to sell advertisements against these prime packs for marketers seeking to target a particular audience. For instance, a cosmetic business could buy ads on a makeup prime pack to target the audience who are presumably interested in buying cosmetic products.

Google Preferred was meant to provide marketers access to a more categorized and higher-quality collection of YouTube content creators and publishers. With Google Preferred, marketers were able to select markets for targeting the top content in specific categories. It was mainly focused on the United States, even though Google Preferred was also accessible by advertisers in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

YouTube is planning to phase out Google Preferred by the end of 2020 and YouTube Select will now provide advertisers access to a higher quality selection of publishers and content creators as Google Preferred program replacement. A spokesman from YouTube told TechCrunch that the core content lineups will continue to remain the same in YouTube Select as they were previously under Google Preferred including categories such as sports, video gaming, music, and technology.

The new YouTube Select program will blend Google Preferred program with prime packs to offer marketers categorized content lineups filled with brand-safe content creators and videos that are approved by YouTube.

Yet, the company is also adding a package specifically focused on YouTube and YouTube TV video content that is streaming to TVs into the YouTube Select. YouTube is already emphasizing YouTube TV video content. YouTube Select program is additionally introducing emerging lineups that put forth up-and-coming or niche content creators.

Vishal Sharma stated in the blog post that advertisers will be confident with YouTube Select that their ad buys are brand-secure. YouTube Select will provide marketers access to advanced brand suitability controls in YouTube Select. You will also have an option within YouTube Select program to only serve advertisements on those videos that have been machine classified as well as verified by humans across all lineups.

Twitter’s New Terms of Use Reflect Changes to User Control Over Data Privacy

$

A lot of people don’t know this, but Twitter recently made a pretty significant change to how much of your data you would be able to control. Basically what they did was that they took away the ability of certain users to control which of their data goes to brands and advertisers, and the fact of the matter is that this is something that they have been trying to notify people about through a notice which you can see at the top of your timeline.

Twitter is taking further steps to make sure that all users are aware of the new policies, and they are basically doing this by changing their terms of use as well as privacy policy. This is done to ensure that users know that some non public data of theirs will be shared with other agencies, and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that it will help Twitter to remain financially viable in the near future which can be a really important thing in a wide variety of ways.

It should be noted that the non public data that is being shared has more to do with what ads you are seeing and how you interact with these ads rather than anything personal that you would want to keep as private as possible. With all of that having been said and out of the way, some users would still be uncomfortable with this. People in the European Union as well as the UK, which is now being mentioned separately due to Brexit, are not going to have to deal with this due to the strong regulations that these areas have imposed on big social media companies, but apart from this specific area this is going to be a pretty major rollout all in all.

Facebook Introduces AI to Make eCommerce Easier

Facebook has been pushing hard into eCommerce for a fair amount of time now and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that there is a lot of money that can be made in this particular industry so much so that you would be surprised at the kind of money these companies rake in. Since Facebook is also doing a lot of research into AI, it seems likely that the social media platform would soon start using this technology to help aid its eCommerce efforts, and it seems like that time has finally arrived.

While the AI incorporation into Facebook’s eCommerce efforts are not as expansive as they might someday end up being, it is still quite a useful tool that would make it so that a lot more people might just end up trying to take part in Facebook’s eCommerce offerings much in the same way they do with service providers like Amazon and to a lesser extent eBay.

The AI that Facebook is launching in this regard is called the universal product recognition model. What it can do is that it can detect what product is in a picture and label it automatically. This would make it a lot easier for people to upload large quantities of their product listings onto the site, and would also likely make the process faster as well as a great deal less frustrating all of which are very good things.

Facebook is entering an industry that already has some of the biggest players. Amazon is one of the biggest companies in the world, and eBay is so popular that you can find pretty much anything on it. Hence, Facebook needs to turn to technological innovation in order to provide its potential new users with something that its competitors do not, and this might just be the sort of thing that could be enormously helpful in this regard since it would provide people with a very practical incentive to start using the new platform. It will be interesting to see what else Facebook ends up introducing.

More Than 1 in 10 People Have Had Their Streaming Account Hacked

$
0
0
In a world getting comfortable with the idea of social distancing (particularly in light of what the “new normal” looks like in a post-COVID-19 world), there’s one form of entertainment millions of Americans have been turning toward: streaming.

The volume of people streaming from platforms including Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube has increased so much in recent months that streaming companies have had to reduce the rendering quality of their content to keep servers from overloading. And with so much uncertainty in the world around the current health crisis, there’s no telling when social distancing or stay-at-home orders will be lifted. Even if things start to feel normal again soon, there’s a fairly high chance you’ll still have plenty of opportunities for binging the latest releases and popular shows.

But when it comes to streaming, video quality probably shouldn’t be your top concern. After surveying 1,000 users, the streaming experts at Flixed discovered that even though most consumers consider their digital security extremely important, many of their streaming behaviors could be compromising their passwords and their privacy.

Without a doubt, one of the worst security behaviors users often embody when it comes to their steaming account includes sharing their passwords. If you want to share your login information with your family and friends so they don’t have to pay for their own subscription, you might want to consider how much access to your passwords (and potential payment information) you want them to have.

Nearly 3 in 4 users with a Netflix subscription (73%) share their passwords, followed by 62% using Amazon Prime Video and 40% using Hulu. After seeing their subscriptions more than double in some parts of the world as a result of COVID-19, roughly 1 in 4 Disney+ users also confessed to sharing their password with friends and family. Overall, more than 2 in 5 users paying for a streaming subscription share at least one of their accounts (including their passwords) with someone else.

So who gets access to the login data and who gets locked out? Netflix passwords were the most commonly shared among the various streaming platforms, with 67% of people giving access to their family members and 55% giving access to their significant other. While most users keep their passwords confined to a smaller circle of friends and partners, roughly 1 in 10 Netflix users also share their passwords with their roommates.

Disney+ users (62%) were the most likely to share their passwords with their significant others and friends (20%), while YouTube TV subscribers were the most likely to share their login details with their roommates (18%).

Even though 60% of users taking advantage of someone else’s account said they would get their own logins if their access was revoked, people not paying for their own platforms reported using two accounts paid for by someone else, on average. Almost 1 in 3 people paying for their own streaming accounts have had to change their passwords to expel someone from using their login information.

With so many people sharing their streaming platform login data with everyone from family members all the way down to roommates, you might be wondering what’s stopping some people from giving away their passwords more regularly or at all.

More than half of streaming users (52%) don’t share their passwords because they’re worried about account security, followed by those worried about personal information security (40%), those who weren’t asked to share(37%), and those unwilling to give up their own streaming time (19%).

While less common, 17% of streaming users didn’t want to get content suggestions based on the viewing patterns of other people, and 12% didn’t want to lose their place in shows they were already watching.

Overall, men were over 13% more likely than women to protect their personal streaming passwords.

While the most common examples of sharing streaming account data occurred between family members and significant others, the biggest concern may not be who you choose to give your password to, but to how many other people they pass it along.

Nearly half – 46% – of people using someone else’s password to access a streaming account admitted to giving that password to someone else. Many account holders remain oblivious to this additional sharing, with 80% of users paying for accounts believing their passwords haven’t been shared outside the people they’ve directly granted access.

More concerning might be how many users invite friends and family members to use their streaming accounts but also use those same passwords for other profiles. A majority (71%) of users sharing their streaming passwords use the same login credentials for their social media accounts, followed by their personal email (46%), their computers (31%), and even their bank accounts (28%).

Considering how many people weren’t aware their family members, friends, or roommates were also passing out their streaming login data, many of these users might not know who also has the password to some of their most sensitive and important accounts.

Many users might be relying on security from the streaming platforms themselves to keep their data safe. Amazon Prime Video (71%) was perceived as the most secure, followed by Netflix (65%) and YouTube TV (46%). Users generally considered both Disney+ and Hulu (also owned by Disney) to be the least secure platforms.

Still, digital security is as much about our own actions as the platforms we entrust with our data. Nearly half (48%) of people who identified protecting their digital security as “very important” also shared their streaming passwords with other people. Another 39% of people who identified protecting their digital security as being “slightly to somewhat important” also admitted to sharing their streaming login details with other people.

Despite more than 64% of users suggesting that streaming platforms themselves were inherently secure as far as protecting their data was concerned, more than 1 in 10 have had their streaming account information hacked. Generationally, millennials were the most likely group to trust the streaming platforms to protect their data.

At the end of the day, if you care about your digital security, you have to take some responsibility for your actions online. Streaming platforms may have certain security measures in place to protect your data, but all of that is void if you don’t know who has access to your passwords.

Especially if you’re someone who uses the same passwords across multiple accounts, it’s incredibly important to monitor who has access to your login information at all times. Believe it or not, most of the people mooching off your Netflix account would be willing to pay for their own if they had to, so you might not be doing them any real favors by putting your digital security at risk.

Most of the users wonder how Microsoft Edge went from restoration for the usually-mocked browser, Internet Explorer to the world’s second most significant and well-known desktop browser. That’s because Microsoft switched to Chromium, and currently, as part of the latest build 2020, Microsoft is adding several significant upgrades to Microsoft Edge such as sidebar search, extension sync, and some other features.

Microsoft published a blog post providing details of the new features for developers, ‘information workers.’ But, we can still say that the blog post is for just everyone. You may check out the complete blog post or video for a rundown of all the new features being added to Microsoft Edge. Here, we will discuss some of the most considerable new features and changes being included in the Microsoft Edge.

First of all, Microsoft Edge is including support for extension sync. If you are a person who owns more than one PCs that are running Microsoft Edge, you will be able to sync all your extensions as long as you have logged into the same Microsoft account on all of those PCs. This new feature might not be useful for everyone, but a lot of users needed this feature. The new extension sync option will be useful for a lot of users using more than one device and probably it will help Microsoft Edge grow more popular among users.

This new extension sync option is already rolled out for public use and you should see this functionality live in Microsoft Edge’s latest version. However, it is still unclear if the extension sync functionality will work with extensions that you have installed from the Chrome web store.

If you want to split work and personal things in your browser, Microsoft is adding a useful feature for you in Microsoft Edge. The new tool is called Automatic profile switching which will allow you to assign particular URLs to a specific work profile. When you will click that specific URL on your personal work profile, the URL will automatically open in the work one.

Microsoft is also upgrading the Edge’s Collections tool which will surely make a lot of users very happy. The Collections tool now integrates with Pinterest to help users search for new ideas to spark motivation. It will also help you to save time as well as the feature will be more productive by recommending you the content relevant to the content you have already collected. There will also be an option for you to export your collections to Pinterest. You may also note that the Collections feature will be releasing a new ‘Sen to OneNote’ option.

The company is also working to make Progressive Web Apps operate a little better on Microsoft Edge. The Microsoft Edge now opens Progressive Web Apps in a standalone menu and it will also let Windows 10 users include apps to the taskbar and the Start Menu. Microsoft Edge’s sidebar comes with several helpful tools, but with the latest upgrade, the company is using the sidebar to make quick searches simple for users. You can right-click and search for a specific term in the sidebar by highlighting the text on your screen, and it can integrate with business search results for associations by using Azure.

New Research Uses Selfies of Social Media Users Without Asking Them

Facial recognition technology is important from security pint of view, and the fact of the matter is that there are a lot of ways in which this kind of technology has the potential to impact our lives. With all of that having been said, the current situation that we are in mandates that people cover their faces up and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that masks might be the only think that could prevent you from catching the virus that is wreaking havoc on the world these days.

Because of the fact that people are wearing masks, it has become more important for facial recognition technology to at least try to adapt. Masks are often not recognized by facial recognition which means that people that unlock their phones using facial recognition are going to be forced to look into using alternate means until and unless an alternative is found or at the very least the tech is improved to the point where people can use facial recognition even while they are wearing masks all in all.

However, the manner in which this research is conducted needs to be ethical. It doesn’t matter how important the tech is, if the research behind it infringes on people’s basic rights then it is better off now being done. According to Cnet, researchers that were focusing on this area decided to use selfies people had taken with their masks in order to do their study, and this might have been okay if they had asked permission which they decidedly did not do.

The selfies were simply harvested off of Instagram which is a place where people often upload things that they only want to share with a select group of people. Hence, the fact that researchers used these photos without permission is a grave misstep, one that could make it so that people that are angered by this behavior might just end up calling for it being cancelled. It is important to avoid missteps like these lest one end up losing the favor of the public which is important for anything.

Facebook, on Thursday, released a new tool for Messenger which is aimed to cut down on mischievous and malicious parties seeking to scam people. Facebook will now scan the accounts of people for suspicious activities, and by leveraging artificial intelligence systems and machine learning to spot abnormalities such as accounts sending a lot of friend requests in a short time period or accounts sending a large number of message requests to Facebook users who are still under the age of 18. The company released this feature during a prominent uptick in fake friend requests due to a change in the Facebook service’s search algorithm.

If the AI systems of the Messenger app detects any suspicious activity, you will see a pop-up chat window in your Messenger app notifying you about the issue. After the pop-up message, you can choose to block the user or ignore it. The system has already experienced a limited release of this feature for some users on Android devices. Some Android users have seen this feature dating as far back as this March. However, the iOS version of this functionality will be rolled out sometime during the upcoming week. The feature displays guidelines that outline the necessary steps to block or ignore those suspicious users, and these guidelines are intended to educate users under the age of 18 about communicating with unknown adults over Facebook’s platform.

This new feature focuses to cut down on crooks scamming Facebook users as well as fake accounts posing as other individuals. The new functionality will also help to protect users under the age of 18 from bad actors. The company has designed this functionality to limit communications between adult Facebookers and users under the age of 18 who are not already linked on Facebook’s platform. According to the company, Facebook’s new tool instructs users under 18 to be watchful while interacting and communicating with adult users who might be unknown to them. Facebook also states that this new functionality empowers users under the age of 18 to take action prior to replying to a message.

A question now arises that human workers may see sensitive data of Facebook users. The company states in this regard that the new feature will continue to operate with the addition of end-to-end encryption on Facebook’s platform. This is likely where the application of machine learning comes in. It will keep human workers from having to see possibly sensitive data of Facebook users.

Pinterest launches Shopping Spotlights to shine more light on shoppable content curated by famous editors, influencers, and publishers

Pinterest, a popular content discovery platform has seen a rise in various online shopping trends amid the coronavirus pandemic. To give a further push, it has come up with an interesting feature called Shopping Spotlights.

This feature will allow guest editors, famous influencers, and publishers from various industries to curate different items.

Pinterest users will be able to browse and purchase these items from fashion to home and lifestyle influencers via this feature.

The ideology behind this new step is to facilitate people who get inspired by something but do not take action to get that thing. So, Shopping Spotlight will bridge this gap and help people to buy the things that inspire them without any delays or hindrances.

The curators are special people who set trends and are looked upon by millions for inspiration.

Many famous people and publications are a part of this venture. Former Teen Vogue editor in chief Elaine Welteroth, influencer Blair Eadie, interior designer Sarah Sherman Samuel, and publications including Refinery29, Domino, and Who What Wear are partnering with Pinterest to launch this new feature.

Pinterest will add a new guest editor to the Shopping Spotlights each week, who will showcase their products. But interestingly, they will not make any commissions from the sales of the products they feature. The company has made it a point that all sales are going to be an advertisement based, instead of depending on commission or affiliate marketing.

Another point to note is that the products that will be featured in Shopping Spotlights will not belong to any particular brands. Pinterest says that almost 97% of its top searches belong to the category of unbranded items, and the majority of consumers on Pinterest look for normal, economical, and yet classy stuff, rather than the common, puffed up brands.

This also shows the mentality of the consumers that use Pinterest to draw inspiration, so it is intelligent of Pinterest to now make use of this not-so-brand-conscious-mindset of its users.

Pinterest has seen remarkable growth since last year, but it has seen a major influx of consumers during this coronavirus pandemic. According to sources, the number of Pinterest users that have engaged with shoppable product pins has increased by a whopping 44% and above over this period.

While the pandemic brought increased traffic to Pinterest and all other social media platforms, it has also impacted the user search items on Pinterest specifically.

Before the pandemic, people were mostly interested in looking for different sorts of things, but now, with the lockdown and work from home situation active globally, public’s interest has shifted towards “pantry recipes,” “ activities for kids,” “home office ideas,” “work from home wear,” and “home office ideas.”

People are also searching for pins about supporting small businesses, and this trend has increased by more than 350 percent in the past few weeks of the pandemic alone!

Considering all this, Pinterest has begun verifying businesses of all sizes now. This verification process will make it easy for companies to sell their products on Pinterest’s shopping platforms and to review the analytics of traffic and engagement from paid and organic activities.

Google ‘Meet’ users to finally get background blur?

Following the coronavirus pandemic, Google made its premium version of ‘Meet’ free for everyone in order to cater the millions of people from the global workforce who are now working from home.

However, despite making all the features available for the general public, Google Meet did not satisfy some users for the feature it lacked in its service.

Yes, the Background Blur!

Working from home may provide the flexibility to work from your own personal space but it has its drawback – especially when it comes to homes with children, which are often messier than many.

Rival Microsoft Teams and Google’s very own Duo offered relief in this sense by enabling the option of background blurs to cover any chaos that might be happening behind the users.

However, the same feature was not available for Google’s Meet users who often felt embarrassment by the imperfections behind them.

Well, luckily, that may not be the case anymore as back-end code of Google Meet’s latest version 41.5 on Play Store shows background blur as the most prominent addition. According to 9to5Google The version includes four strings that mention background blur and seems like Google would be testing the option in its Meet app, starting with Android.

The definite date for the integration of background blur in Meet calls is still uncertain and there is a potential chance of Google not ever shipping these features. However, it is at least testing the aforementioned strings and we can anticipate an official launch soon – especially with remote working a major requirement of today’s corporate world.

Of course, Google Meet adding background blur to its system would still keep it far behind one of its biggest competitor – Zoom that offers an option to replace the background with an image or video of the user’s choice.

Facebook Plans to Reopen Offices in July

Not too long ago, Twitter made some serious headlines when CEO Jack Dorsey announced that employees would be able to work from home indefinitely as a result of the fact that the coronavirus pandemic already has them working from home at least for the year. This started a lot of discussion about how other companies would operate in the coming months, with Microsoft and Amazon choosing to make most employees work from home at least until October. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that they would reopen their offices in phases throughout the summer, and now Facebook has weighed in with its open reopening processes.

The social media giant has announced that it will be reopening offices in July but will only be making 25% of its overall workforce come to the office to work with the rest working from home. Making 75% of its employees work from home will facilitate social distancing in the office because of the fact that a smaller number of employees would be using a larger office space allowing them to sit and work far from each other whilst still being available to furnish the day to day requirements of things like this.

Wearing face masks at the workplace is also going to be mandatory as an added precaution to make it so that the spread of coronavirus can be prevented and an outbreak at the office becomes far less possible which is understandable because of the fact that an outbreak at Facebook’s HQ could end up having a pretty serious impact on the kind of future Facebook might be able to have all in all.

The reopening of offices is a contentious issue but at the end of the day some companies might have to reopen offices in order to get work done because of the fact that an extended work from home situation could result in losses in the long run.

Google And Apple Rolled Out Digital Coronavirus Tracing Technology

$

On Wednesday, Apple and Google jointly announced the release of a coronavirus exposure notification system. It is a unified programming interface that will help public health officials to develop their own COVID-19 contact tracing apps. The tech giants are not creating applications and both the companies stated that starting from today, they have made their Exposure Notifications system available to public health departments on Android as well as iOS.

Apple and Google stated that today their technology is in the hands of public health organizations across the globe and the companies will continue to support their battle against coronavirus. Whenever you download and enable a coronavirus contact tracing app, you will receive a notification from the app if you are exposed to an infected person. But, the coronavirus-positive-person should also have the app-enabled on their smartphone for this system to work efficiently.

The new system is not meant to replace traditional human-to-human tracing, rather the system is meant to argument it. Digital contact tracing is fast and requires less resources as compared to traditional contact tracing. The digital system can also make it simple to track contact with strangers as digital contact tracing does not rely on a person’s memory.

However, people will have to download and enable these types of apps on their smartphones if we want these apps to be effective. It is also yet not clear if Americans will be willing to download such applications on their smartphones. A model created by the University of Oxford suggests that around 60% of the people will have to download digital contact tracing applications for such apps to be effective. However, fewer download rates may still have a positive impact.

For such a higher adoption rate, Americans will have to trust that public health agencies will protect their private health data. You may wonder how these contact tracing apps will verify positive coronavirus tests, and guard against individuals flooding the digital system with fake positives.

Operating together to design the contact tracing system implies that Android and iOS apps and apps from various regions will have to be able to recognize each other. You will have to consent to make your data available to health agencies while using these contact tracing apps, and you can also turn off the option. Your data will be kept private and Google and Apple will not monetize the information that comes out of the exposure notification technology.
