Google Chrome is testing a new user interface for Tab page with Query Tiles

Google Chrome is bringing a new user interface for its ‘tab page’ which will have query tiles.

Chrome has been working on bringing new designs to its tab page for a while now, and back in 2019, they brought a new user interface for the Chrome tab page which had tab organizational theme. All the UI elements were moved closer to the top of the display and ‘recommended articles’ was replaced with the tab features.

This design has still not reached the stable channel, but Google has started testing on a more advanced design theme that adds ‘Query tiles’ on the tab page for quick search.

Android Police has reported that these query tiles are predefined search shortcuts with photographs. This is the correct way to explain them. All the most searched topics are arranged in a tab organizational theme with tiles that have images of those categories.

For example, if there is a tile named ‘CoronaVirus,’ the image would be of the Covid-19. Likewise, another tile named ‘Investment’ may have some money-related picture as its thumbnail image. When a tile is tapped, it will produce few sub-categories underneath it, like COVID-19 related news, videos, or games under the category of Electronics.

So, this will make the search super quick and efficient. If a user needs the recipe of something, all they would need to do is to click on the tile which is named ‘Recipes,’ and when the sub-categories will be shown, the user can write the name of the dish that they want to look up for.

So far, Google is offering thirteen first-level tile categories in the US. These categories are News, Recipes, Fashion, Health, Films, Music, Electronics, TV Shows, Astrology, Sports, Education, Automobiles, and Investment.

As mentioned above, a list of sub-categories will be presented once a tile is tapped. Users will also have an option to edit the keywords in their search before submitting it. This way they can customize their search and make it more efficient and narrowed down.

This feature of editing the search keywords can be enabled or disabled as per the user’s wish from chrome://flags through the #query-tiles-enable-query-editing option.

This tiles feature is currently in the Chrome Dev and Canary versions. It is not known exactly when it will reach the beta testing phase and then to the stable channel. But if anyone wants to try this new feature on their device, they will have to go to Google Chrome flag page and then search for ‘query tiles’. From there, this #query-tiles flag can be enabled.

There are a total of six different flags for this ‘tiles’ feature that can customize the features as per the user’s desire and the workability of the device. Apart from the two flags mentioned above,

The other flags are as follows:

#query-tiles-omnibox which enables query tiles to show up below the Omnibox, both on the new tab page and anytime you click on the Omnibox in a tab.

#query-tiles-country-code which personalizes the tile content based on the user’s location. So far, India, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia, and the US are available in this category.

#query-tiles-single-tier is used for limiting queries to a single level no sub-category.

#query-tiles-instant-fetch for no user-facing changes.

All these flags are experimental, and it is not known if they will be available in the Chrome stable version or not.

A Cybersecurity Researcher Discovered That Thousands of WhatsApp Mobile Numbers Are Available Through A Google Search

$

Athul Jayaram, an independent cybersecurity researcher highlights that the phone number of several WhatsApp users is searchable in plain text on Google Search. Jayaram published a blog post explaining that he has found a privacy issue in the web portal of WhatsApp. According to Jayaram, the privacy issue has leaked around 29,000 to 30,000 phone numbers of WhatsApp users in plain that can be accessed by any person using the internet.

According to Jayaram, users who are affected are from almost all countries including the US, Mexico, Indonesia, UK, India, Russia, China, Spain, Pakistan, Malaysia and many more. According to Jayaram, the thing that makes this easy or seems to be simple is that the information can be accessed on the open web, and not on the dark web. He also contacted the WhatsApp parent company Facebook for this issue. He informed Facebook about the privacy issue he has discovered. The social media company replied to Jayaram that data abuse is only covered for Facebook platforms and the company does not cover data abuse for WhatsApp.

While suggesting a solution, Jayaram stated that the company could have avoided this privacy issue if WhatsApp encrypted the phone numbers of users as well as by including a robots.txt file. This would have disallowed the bots from crawling the domain as well as a Meta no-index tag on the pages. However, WhatsApp, unfortunately, did not do that, and privacy of WhatsApp users may be at stake, Jayaram added.

He also said that WhatsApp should care about security vulnerabilities as the platform has a huge user base. Nowadays, the phone numbers of a lot of people are connected to their online services, bank accounts, Credit cards, and cryptocurrency wallets, etc. If a hacker knows the phone numbers of people, there is a possibility that it can lead a hacker to perform SIM card swapping and perform cloning attacks.

According to Jayaram, there is a ‘click to chat’ feature in WhatsApp, and links are generated as "https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX" in this feature. The said feature does not encrypt the mobile number of users in the generated link. Jayaram explained that if this link is shared anywhere, the mobile number of the user becomes visible in the plain text.

For example, if you share a ‘click to chat’ link with your friend on any social platform such as Facebook or Twitter, your phone number will appear in plain text in the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) as well as to anyone who can find the URL. If you have deleted the original source of the link, your mobile number will still be accessible on Google because Google bot would have crawled and indexed the URL before you would have deleted the link.

Jayaram explained that as the ‘https://wa.me’ does not contain the robots.txt file in the server root, Google bots cannot be stopped from crawling the URL. Moreover, any search engine can index these links as the pages do not contain Meta no-index tags.

Due to this privacy issue, unknown individuals, cybercriminals, marketing executives, and fraudsters may find users mobile number. If you have set your WhatsApp privacy settings to public, this privacy issue may help scammers access your details such as profile status, name, or profile picture, etc. Jayaram recommended that the best solution is to delete your WhatsApp account or change your phone number.

Search site:wa.me with your country code on Google Search to see which phone numbers are available on the web publicly.

A similar incident also happened with Private Whatsapp groups in February of this year, however, back then Facebook tweaked a few settings on its side to stop the indexation of private groups chat links in search engines, we hope the social media giant will take quick actions this time too. And hopefully it'll review all other data leaking aspects of its app to prevent any such mishaps in the future.

Facebook Posts New Recommendations For Discussing ‘Race And Social’ Issues In Groups

$

The social media giant, Facebook has been making efforts to address a surge in social turmoil. Previously, the company stated that it would review its content policies. Now, the company’s efforts will extend beyond reviewing the content policies. Facebook has now issued recommendations for group admins and moderators.

The company published these new recommendations on Friday to help group operators facilitate discussions about ‘race and social issues,’ as the #BlackLivesMatter protests currently gripping the United States and several other countries. These new recommendations seem to be logical, however, it is evident that Facebook has built these recommendations in direct response to conversations becoming increasingly political among the approaching United States presidential election and anti-racist activism.

In the new recommendations, the social media behemoth suggested that individuals from ‘impacted communities’ should be made operators (administrators and moderators) of groups. The company also suggests that group operators should review the rules of the groups and outline the rules for group members. Group operators should outline the rules even if it means to forbid certain topics or requiring approval of posts from group operators.

Facebook also wants that group operators should be open to member input. But, group leaders may also have to admit that the nature of the group may change over time, or even prompt members to create another Facebook group. A lot of group operators have been struggling to moderate conversations about injustice in the United States and the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. Many group leaders also started to delete posts they considered political, and this prompted people to leave a group and create splinter groups.

Facebook now recommends that group leaders should create a list of topics that are not allowed in the group. The social media network recommends group operators to listen to members of their groups and be open to change. This new decision made by the company is an acknowledgment that tensions in Facebook Groups have increased. The tensions in groups have grown following the death of George Floyd and the protests resulting due to his death. Group operators are currently looking for answers and Facebook’s new recommendations will help group operators to address discussions related to race and inequality. The social media platform wrote in a post that Facebook knows these discussions are hard and reflect current discrepancies in our society. However, they are important and the company hopes that Facebook will be able to continue to help people facilitate ongoing conversations as well as learning.

These new recommendations are further recognition that Facebook users want the company to spend lesser time on the sidelines - people want to know that Facebook is responsive to changing circumstances.

New Data From Canalys Predicts, Worldwide PC Sales Will Drop 7 Percent This Year

$

0
The new set of data provided by Canalys, a leading global technology market analyst firm, projects a 7% decrease in worldwide PC shipments. The drop is one of the countless impacts of lockdowns being imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, Canalys noted that the direct effects of coronavirus are mostly behind the PC industry because of the rebounding of China’s supply chain.

Moreover, it is expected that the global recession caused due to Covid-19  will continue to have a notable impact on the PC industry (including desktop, notebook and tablets). In simple words, currently people do not have enough money to buy upgraded devices which are resulting in decreased PC sales across the globe.

It is expected that vertical will take a 6% hit in North America. This because forty million unemployment claims have already been filed by the United States citizens since the coronavirus pandemic started to spread across the world. According to Canalys, a complete recovery is not expected until the end of this year when Canalys expects the category to grow by 4% as compared to the prior year. However, this data is based on estimates, and a lot of things can change in two years, especially at the rate the world is going.

It is expected that China and the broader Asia Pacific region will recover in less time as they experienced small declines during the coronavirus pandemic. China and the broader Asia Pacific region were at the front of the first wave of the pandemic and these regions will recover in a short time because of the effective management of the Covid-19 crisis.

You may also note that the PC industry was not as hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic as the mobile phone industry. PC manufacturers were able to slow the slide during the pandemic as customers and businesses purchased PC equipment to upgrade their home office setups. The coronavirus lockdowns forced the people to start working from home for their respective organizations, and many people did not have the required equipment to work remotely for their organizations. Moreover, companies had to upgrade their PCs to meet the requirements of the ongoing situation. This ultimately helped the PC industry to face the situations caused due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Top 5 Tips for Making the Most of LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator

$
0
0
LinkedIn's Sales Navigator offers users the chance to find leads in the platform's network of professionals. With over 675 million users worldwide in 2020, this presents a tremendous opportunity.

However, many users leave a great deal of Sales Navigator's potential untapped. There is a rich host of features to be harnessed - from integrating CRM systems to performing advanced searches - that only few users exploit completely.

Here are the top 5 strategies to make the most of LinkedIn's Sales Navigator. And find the perfect leads for your business.

1 - Use Advanced Searches

Sales Navigator offers options for specifying a massive number of parameters, going far beyond the job titles of the leads you’re looking for.

Users can include factors such as geographic location, seniority level, and job description. Furthermore, it's possible to narrow the results down according to company headcount. At the individual level, you can even look for leads who’ve worked for specific companies in the past.

Another element of Sales Navigator's advanced search functionality are Boolean operators. Using AND, OR, and NOT, you can define a clear target persona for your leads.

Finally, it’s possible to filter results with keywords. Sales Navigator will search through people's profile descriptions, and show you those matching your specific keywords.

2 - Save Searches and Leads - and Get Updates

Sales Navigator makes it possible to save search parameters rather than asking users to build each search query from scratch every time. Re-running the same searches periodically will give you a clear picture of the dynamics among the leads you’re interested in. Running an identical search again after two months will likely yield different results.

It's also possible to save specific leads in the navigator. If these leads change jobs, you will receive alerts immediately. This gives you the opportunity to use the same lead to access a new company, or to try again with someone who has declined your services in their old position - but may be able to accept in their new one.

3 - Integrate CRM Systems

On the higher tiers of Sales Navigator, it is possible to integrate Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems. Salesforce, HubSpot, Outreach, Oracle Sales Cloud, and other popular CRM systems integrate natively with Sales Navigator.

Using this functionality makes it a breeze to manage your sales pipeline, and track data using a single platform. It will also help you evaluate how successful you are in extending your network of leads using Sales Navigator, by running analytics on the leads you acquire there.

4 - Keep Your Eyes on Both Inbound and Outbound Marketing

Of course, Sales Navigator is geared mostly towards outbound sales. However, as with LinkedIn Premium, users can also see who has viewed their profile recently. This allows you to harness it for inbound connections.

Periodically checking who has visited your LinkedIn profile or company page will give you insight into who is already interested in you. Given this preliminary interest, these leads are likely to be particularly valuable.

5 - Use Data for Personalization of Cold Emails

LinkedIn Sales Navigator also offers access to deeper insights than most other B2B sales tools currently on the market. Hundreds of thousands of professionals in your industry share details about themselves freely on this platform. Using Sales Navigator, you can make use of these details - for example, to personalize cold emails.

Once you have identified a promising lead using Sales Navigator, you can dig through their interests, passion projects, former jobs, educational background, and much more. You can do this manually, but for larger sets, the advanced filters outlined above come in handy.

With the information you gather this way, it is easy to personalize cold email templates, segment your lists of leads, and add intimate touches that can boost your cold emailing ROI.

Even just using variables such as {Title} when addressing someone you’ve never been in contact with before can make all the difference.

Final Thoughts

LinkedIn's Sales Navigator is one of the most valuable lead finding tools out there for marketers. It’s worth investing the time and effort into getting to grips with the tool and learning about its full range of features. This will allow you to dig deeper than you thought possible, find highly specific leads, and increase your sales efficiency.

Is Sales Navigator worth its monthly subscription fee, which starts at $64.99 per month? In a word, yes.

But if you want to go ahead and explore its possibilities for yourself first, the platform offers a free trial. The lead hunting season is open!

Apple’s 8 Year Long Attempt to Replace Human Labor With Robots Fails Dramatically, Costs Millions

$

One thing that a lot of people tend to be worried about these days is the fact that there are so many problems that are occurring on a regular basis when it comes to the jobs that people can get and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that there is a lot of automation that is happening and this automation is making it so that traditional jobs are being rendered obsolete and the people that were working these jobs are being rendered redundant and thereby unemployed.

However, the news that Apple tried and failed for 8 years to develop robots that would be able to replace human workers, losing millions of dollars in the process, is the sort of thing that would most likely give quite a few people a lot of hope for obvious reasons. According to TheInformation, during this 8 year period, Apple has tried automating a wide variety of things, with Tim Cook inaugurating this program because of the fact that he was shown by Apple’s contractor Foxconn a machine that could supposedly automate a lot of the various aspects of iPad manufacturing process.

While the initial attempts look promising, there were a lot of roadblocks that were faced. Putting in screws that were this small was often quite difficult because of the fact that creating a machine with the dexterity of human fingers is obviously next to impossible, and there is also the fact that creating software that can govern this is also very difficult to do. The application of glue on the screens is also something that only humans can do efficiently, and malfunctions that occurred resulted in the closing down of assembly lines which caused even more financial losses.

What all of this means is that there are clearly some jobs that are better done by humans than machines, and Apple’s failure to secure any kind of success in spite of the fact that it invested so much might just discourage other companies from looking into automation as well which would be good news for workers.

Google proposes an internal code change in Chrome to replace the word blacklist to blocklist to eliminate all the instances of racism

$
0
0
Google has been playing an active role to stand against all forms of racism. For the past few weeks, the protests that are going on all over the globe to support the slogan: ‘Black Lives Matter,’ Google has also stood firm in the support of this movement and protests.

As an extended gesture to show how seriously the teams at Google Chrome are taking this issue, they have proposed a way to move away from all sorts of slight and subtle forms of racism even, by changing the terms like ‘blacklist’ and ‘whitelist.’

It is a great gesture because although they do not mean this, terms like ‘blacklist’ do suggest something bad. And ‘whitelist’ is suggestive of something good. So, to avoid hurting any race of people, they have decided to substitute these terms with words like ‘blocklist’ and ‘allowlist.’

In October 2019, the Chromium Open Source Project included guidance in its guide for official code style about how to write racially neutral codes. This document also outlined the same thing that Chrome and Chromium developers must avoid terms that are even slightly racial and may hurt the sentiments of a particular community or race. In this document, these codes were mentioned, and their substitute words were also suggested.

So, this means that Google had been thinking about this overly sensitive issue even before the latest unfortunate happenings that prompted the ‘Black Lives Matter Movement.’

It shows that teams at Google are very intuitive and genuinely do not want to hurt anyone, and this is quite nice to know.

Not only this, Google had already started heading towards substituting these words in May 2018, but Google’s internal coding still contained many references to blacklists, which included an entire section of code termed ‘components/blacklist.’ So, it was not eliminated completely back then.

But now, due to the recent events of protests against police brutality and racism, a Chromium developer has come up with a new code change that safely replaces all possible instances where the word ‘blacklist’ is used, without breaking any part of the browser. Their ultimate goal is to rename the ‘components/blacklist’ with ‘components/blocklist.’

As per the sources at Google, this is the first of two changes to rename components/blacklist to components/blocklist. This contains all the class, method, member, and variable renaming without bringing any functional differences. This patch will be followed by another that will rename the directory/files and updates the necessary build system rules.

There are more than 2000 references for the word ‘blacklist.’ All of them will be replaced when the code change will be reviewed and accepted.

Internet usage exponentially increased amid the coronavirus pandemic, and the way of life changed completely for everyone in the world. Due to the lockdown and social distancing measures, organizations and educational institutes had to shut down, and people were bound at home. So, they resorted to the internet and technical apps for work, education, information, and entertainment purposes.

This heavy reliance on the internet has led to a whopping 47% increase in broadband data usage, with more gigabit and terabyte subscribers.

As per OpenVault’s Broadband Insights Report for the first three months of 2020, the average broadband consumption has reached 402.5GB. This value was at 273.5GB last year around the same time. This means that the average broadband consumption has increased by almost 47%. It is also 17% higher than what it was towards the end of 2019.

Due to this heavy reliance on internet usage and fast speed, gigabit internet subscribers increased by 97%. This percentage was hardly 1.9% at the beginning of 2019 and had reached 2.8% by the end of last year. Even in the 1st quarter of 2020, it was at 3.75%.

Similarity, Infinera has provided an informative infographic that gives insights into the habits of online users and how they are collectively using so much data.

As per Infinera’s calculations, on April 4th of this year, 50,000 years’ worth of media was live-streamed! In one day alone! Now, these are figures that are hard to believe but they are there because of services and apps like Netflix and Peloton.

Netflix has seen a 22% year-over-year growth in subscribers, while Peloton’s user growth rose by 66%. Disney+ is also seeing the growth that it was likely to see after four years and has gained 54 million paid subscribers!

If we come to social media platforms, Facebook has seen a 27% increase in daily website traffic, while for WhatsApp, it’s a double increase in calls and videos.

For LinkedIn, there is a 26% quarterly growth of user sessions, and with TikTok, there is a 25% increase in the number of monthly installs of the app.

In Business apps, Microsoft Teams has set a record of 2.7 billion total meeting minutes in a single day.

Slack has seen an 80% increase in new paid customers in comparison to the first quarter of 2020.

Google Meet has seen 3800 years of the worth amount of time spent in sessions in one day!

There is a 2900% growth of daily Zoom participants since last year’s December.

In Gaming apps, Nintendo has seen a 41% surge in annual profits, while for the social gaming app, Bunch Live, there is 1 million growth of users in one week.

There has been a double increase in in-game revenue for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare versus 2019’s all of Duty: Black Ops.

There is a 70% growth in monthly sign-ups for the social video and gaming app, House Party.

Microsoft has seen a 775% increase in cloud service usage, especially in the regions where lockdown and social distancing measures were strictly implemented. Amazon web services have seen 70% of year-over-year growth in revenue in the first quarter of 2020.

KeepSolid SmartDNS Review 2020: Watch Any Geo-Restricted Streaming Services

$
0
0
Allow me to paint you a picture. You have long wanted to check out a renowned streaming service. One evening, you have some leisure time and decide to finally get down to it. You Google the service name and it turns out to be unavailable in your region. Or, even worse, it’s available and you pay for it, only to find out that the shows or movies you were looking to watch can’t be accessed. What do, Netflix, what do?

Such issues occur as a result of geo-blocking - the practice of restricting users access to a particular content based on their location. But what if you’d still like to view blocked streaming services? You’re in luck! Dedicated solutions, like KeepSolid SmartDNS, allow to bypass geo-blocking, access any restricted services, and stream movies and shows at top-tier quality and connection speed.

Whats and whys of geo-blocking

Geo-blocking is commonly utilized by all sorts of service providers. It can come in various forms:
  • A piece of content can be restricted to a specific location, e.g. a region or a country. This way, you won’t be able to access it from abroad.
  • It can be restricted in selected locations. For instance, government censorship may require to ban certain sites, apps, or videos on their state’s territory.
  • Another common reason type of blocking stems from content distribution agreements. A service provider doesn’t have the rights to feature a movie, show, or album in certain countries. That’s why content libraries of, say, Netflix, vary wildly from region to region in terms of available titles.
To enforce geo-blocking, service providers monitor user data that can reveal their real location. Most often, they use IP addresses for this. However, since nowadays it’s not that difficult to get a virtual IP address in any location you want, organizations employ more sophisticated measures. This is why a mere proxy server is no longer enough to bypass geo-blocking, and that’s why SmartDNS has become necessary.

What is SmartDNS

SmartDNS technology is designed around changing your Domain Name Server (DNS) for internet censorship circumvention. It tricks streaming services into thinking that your requests originate from a location where their content is available. In that, SmartDNS has two significant advantages over proxy servers. First of all, it affects only that part of your internet traffic that can deanonymize your (your DNS queries). Second, it doesn’t affect your IP address, so you won’t face problems like IP-based security authentication.

This makes SmartDNS particularly useful to:
  • View geo-blocked sites and services that are speed-sensitive (such as online streaming services)
  • Access geo-blocked sites and services that track your location by means other than your IP address (for instance, the US Netflix is one such service)
  • Keep your overall browsing experience clean and avoid lags

What streaming services you can watch with KeepSolid SmartDNS

SmartDNS solution by KeepSolid allows you to unblock a host of popular streaming channels that may otherwise be unavailable in your location. Among them are:

Unlimited amount of devices

Most services that you could use to bypass geo-blocking have quite harsh restrictions in terms of the number of devices per one account. With KeepSolid SmartDNS you won’t have to worry about this stuff - you’ll be able to use your profile on an unlimited number of devices.

Facebook Removes 190 Accounts Linked To Hate Groups

$

The giant social media network, Facebook has been combating against the spread of hate speech across its platform. Now, the platform is combating against hate with an added degree of urgency. According to the Associated Press, the giant social platform has deactivated approximately two hundred accounts. Facebook confirmed it to the Associated Press that the removed accounts were connected to hate groups across Facebook’s platform.

The company has also previously banned white supremacist Facebook Groups such as the American Guard and the Proud Boys, etc. It has been reported that the social media platform has already been gearing up to deactivate accounts, however, the company’s hand was forced when it became evident that these Facebook users were planning to stoke tensions during the ongoing crisis.

Currently, anti-racism protests are sweeping the United States following the death of George Floyd. The protest began in the US after the death of George Floyd on May 25. Authorities have now charged Derek Chauvina Minneapolis police officer, with second-degree murder in George Floyd’s death. The social network, Facebook has been monitoring the users, and begun to see content across its platform that was encouraging the masses to attend protests in person.

Brian Fishman, the company’s counter-terrorism director stated that those Facebook users connected to hate groups whose accounts have been removed by Facebook, planned to rally group members to attend those anti-racism protests (and foster fights).

Facebook’s counter-terrorism director also stated that they were also sometimes preparing to go with weapons. Previously, the company cracked down on Boogaloo Facebook Groups, after which Facebook took this measure to deactivate accounts linked to hate groups. These boogaloo groups include racists and white supremacists, and they tried to pose as Antifa members. The company announced last week that Facebook will limit the spread of groups as well as pages across its platforms that are linked to the term, ‘Boogaloo’.

It has been seen that Facebook has been stepping up the company’s anti-hate efforts during the past few months. Facebook started to ban more groups as well as the platform started to implement artificial intelligence (AI) to detect hate speech across Facebook’s platform. But, the ongoing situation of the United States is putting the policies of Facebook to the test - it’s evidently determined to display that Facebook can not only take action against hate speech across Facebook’s platform but move quickly for limiting the attempts to fuel violence.

An Insider’s Perspective on How You Can Get a Job at TikTok

$
0
0
TikTok is one of the biggest social networking platform of the year and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that it has managed to become popular with the younger users, an audience that might not have been all that interested in other options that had slowly started to become somewhat mainstream in the market all in all.

TikTok has managed to attain this level of success in spite of the fact that it is still pretty new in the industry at the end of the day, and this success means that quite a few people would be lining up to work at this new tech trailblazer that has so much potential and could even change the way we utilize social media in the first place.

With the tech company being owned by Chinese firm ByteDance jobs have been hard to come by, but with TikTok now aggressively expanding into American territory by opening offices all across the country, including huge metropolises such as New York or Los Angeles, people are going to be eager to get in on the action. However, if you were thinking of getting a job in this manner you might not realize just how difficult it has the potential to be if you are not extremely careful.

Luckily for you, an insider has come in with some useful insights that you can implement while you are applying for any kind of job at the company. This insider is none other than Kate Barney who is heading HR for the American division of TikTok so you can rest assured that her information is going to be legitimate in pretty much every single way, shape or form.

Suffice it to say that the current global pandemic that we are going through has impacted hiring in a really great way because of the fact that people are working from home, but one thing that you need to understand is that TikTok has a list of values that it looks for in its employees that it refers to as ByteStyle.

The interview will also be quite different because of the fact that the company conducts group interviews in order to see how you as well as other prospective applicants would play with others. Your interview will also be conducted over Zoom for obvious reasons so you should try to keep this in mind as it will have an impact on how you can approach any specific problem that ends up coming your way as it will change how you respond to certain questions and how you would go about preparing for said interview.
"Candidates who are really trying to push themselves to learn new things would be a better culture fit than someone who comes across as very arrogant or with a large ego.", explained Barney in an interview to BusinessInsider.

A Report Suggests That The Content Moderation Efforts Made By Facebook Are Insufficient

According to the latest report published by NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights, Facebook needs to end the outsourcing practice so content moderation receives the required attention as well as the resources it deserves. The company should also increase the number of moderators, and provide improved working conditions to moderators.

Facebook has been facing criticism for years over the platform’s handling of misinformation, and other dangerous content across its platform. The criticism has intensified during the past few days, and the reputation of Facebook continues to degrade as Mark Zuckerberg denied to remove content posted by President Donald Trump that appears to be violating Facebook’s policies.

Paul Barret, the deputy director of the Stern Center and the report’s principal author stated that he wants to highlight that Facebook has relegated the moderation work to a secondary role by essentially employing contractors in remote locations who are underpaid. Barret stated that there is a surprising connection between the outsourcing issue and the issues they have faced in what they call ‘at-risk regions.’

The report also suggests that all the significant social platforms are facing similar content moderation issues. Around 15,000 moderators are working for Facebook, and most of these moderators work for third-party vendors. In comparison, Google and YouTube have 10,000 moderators, and Twitter has 1,500 moderators.

According to the study, Facebook has partnered with sixty different journalist organizations for implementing fact-checking. However, these numbers are grossly inadequate keeping in view the volume of data disseminated on these platforms daily.

Barret said in an interview that Facebook has a strategy to expand. However, you do not have a parallel strategy on how to ensure that your services are not misused by the users, he added. Users as well as Facebook’s AI system flag over three million items each day. Facebook reports an error rate of 10% by content moderators spread across twenty websites. This means that the company makes around 300,000 moderation mistakes daily. Content moderators have been marginalized to a great extent, even though they are critical to keeping Facebook’s platform usable.

As they are physically distant, Facebook usually fails to identify the gravity of content reviewed by moderators in locations like Myanmar (Facebook is used to spread propaganda by pro-government forces in Myanmar). Barret interviewed various former moderators and the report suggests Facebook pays outsourced content moderators in developing countries far less as compared to a full-time worker in Silicon Valley.

The report suggests that Facebook should bring moderation in-house as well as double the number of moderators. The company also needs to appoint a high-ranking executive to oversee moderation and invest extra in moderation for ‘at-risk countries.’ The report also states that Facebook needs to expand the fact-checking scale to combat misinformation and support government regulations.

Barret stated that implementing these measures may be expensive for Facebook, however, he is optimistic that the company may take some steps in this direction. Facebook has also started to admit that AI systems used to flag content often fails to properly understand the context of the content.

Artificial Intelligence Can Possibly Detect Fake News In A Better Way By Analyzing User Interaction

Researchers who have their affiliations with Microsoft and Arizona State University have come up with a technique to detect fake news with the help of “weak social supervision”. According to them, training the fake news detecting AI with the new method can even work when labeled examples aren’t provided as weak social supervision is based on analyzing the user interaction to a post in order to better analyze if the news is misleading or not.

If we go by the statistics given by Pew Research Center, then almost 68 percent of US adults in 2018 had social media as their main source of news. This is rather frightening because of how misinformation spreads easily on social networking sites and a living example of that can be the news regarding COVID-19 pandemic. Although tech giants including Facebook, Google and Twitter are trying their best to detect misleading data, but the thing about fake news is that it continues to change its style which becomes difficult for any AI model to detect efficiently.

Continuing with the study already published in April, the coauthors have further presented a suggestion that weak supervision - a noisy or imprecise source helping data label signals - can result into much better fake news detection without the need for fine-tuning. They also built a framework called as Tri-relationship for Fake News (TiFN) that observes social media users and their connections in the form of “interaction network” only to pick out fake news.

To be precise, interaction network is the link between publishers, news stories, and users. So for an interaction network provided, TiFN then embeds the entities by observing people who choose to interact with like-minded friends. Moreover, upon making the predictions, the framework also takes into consideration the fact that users who are connected may also have shared interest mentioned in the news articles, publishers who are politically-biased can publish fake news and users who have low credibility can also spread fake news.

To test out the effectiveness of TiFN’s weak social supervision model, a Politifact data of 120 true news pieces and 120 verifiable fake pieces were shared in between 23,865 users for validation. The result was also supposed to compete with baseline detectors that only focus on news content and some social interactions. The final outcome, as reported by the researchers showed that TiFN achieved between 75% to 87% accuracy, even with the limitations involved as the role of weak social supervision came into play after only 12 hours of when the news got published.

There was another experiment done on a different Politifact data that was based on 145 true news and 270 fake news pieces having 89,999 comments from 68,523 users on Twitter but now this test involved a separate custom framework called Defend - the one that only picks out news sentences and user comments to state as if the news if fake as per weak supervision signal. Defend was able to score 90% accuracy.

The detection performance came out better when weak social supervision from publisher-bias and user-credibility was used. But when news content, user comment, or the co-attention for news contents and user comments were eliminated, the performance also fell short - which also finally propose that the use of weak social supervision is beneficial.

Account verification seems to begin again on Twitter and that is a great news

Jane Manchun Wong, a reverse engineer who unearths distinctive features in various social media apps that are not yet officially rolled out, has reported recently that Twitter is working on “Request Verification.” This is great news but as per Wong, this feature is still in the testing phases, and it is not known when it will be released for public.

She posted a screenshot on Twitter showing the existence of this feature in the form of a ‘Request Verification’ option found under Account > Personal Information.

In 2016, Twitter had started verifying the account requests by users, and all the verified accounts received a visual prominence on the platform. Now, the fact of the matter is that account verification is considered as a status symbol, and the public started to perceive it as an endorsement.

Due to the visual prominence that these verified accounts received on Twitter, this impression of endorsement became further ingrained and to avoid it all, Twitter stopped verifying the accounts altogether by 2017.

According to Twitter, they believe that their halting the account verification process was done because it felt like an endorsement to the general public, and this was an issue that they should have addressed even earlier. However, stopping this process does not mean that everything goes unchecked.

As per the sources, they started working on a better authentication and verification process back in 2017, which is most likely going to get released now under the hood of the ‘Request Verification’ option.

Also, they are making sure that the account checking process is stricter so that when an account gets the status of being ‘verified,’ the verification badge does not feel like an endorsement.

This sounds a good approach and not so overwhelming too. But Twitter has not released any official statement in this regard about this feature and its release date. But its release is going to be a good thing nonetheless because there has to be a proper check and balance mechanism while accepting account requests.

Other apps also have some kind of verification and authentication process for new accounts. Facebook provides a fairly advanced authentication process and that does give a sense of security to the users.

These processes are important, but there is no denying that they do overwhelm the users a lot. So, tech apps must try to make these processes as easy and functional as possible.

Some insights into upcoming trends in shopping and consumer expectations once the lockdowns ease in the post-coronavirus world

Earlier this year, when the coronavirus pandemic hit the world, more than one-third of the consumers in countries like the US expected to see different brands advertising in such a way that they focus on providing tips to the consumers about how to keep themselves safe from COVID-19.

However, now that the world is in the mid-COVID phase, and lockdowns have started easing down in many countries, consumers are now expecting to see their favorite brands advertising in such a way that they help people transition back from this ‘abnormal’ lifestyle into their normal, pre-COVID lifestyle.

Social ad platform, Smartly.Io has carried a survey study on five thousand consumers and has analyzed the impact before and after the coronavirus pandemic on the consumers’ expectations. They published their study in a blog post, and they have stated that it is very likely that social media advertising will see a rapid shift once lockdowns start easing down globally.

They have also suggested that in the new-post-COVID world, consumers are going to expect that their favorite brands will not only show them some products and services that will help them transition from one phase to another, but they will also guide them with products that will be fit for them in the post-COVD world too. Especially the consumers in the US and Australia are likely to demand that brands bring a change in their advertising methods, and focus more on their ad messages related to the effects of the pandemic that these consumers had to go through, or have been going through since so many months.

This study also suggested that the brands that kept advertising on social media even during the early days of the pandemic saw satisfactory results due to their continuous marketing efforts. They also faced less competition for viewers because they were already continuously appearing in social ads.

This strategy got good results for smaller brands also even in countries with strict lockdowns like Italy and Spain.

Almost 73% of consumers in India purchased items that they saw in social ads during the lockdown period, and this also proves how effective this continuous marketing strategy proved to be.

This study also confirms the reports from other sources that also pointed towards the surge in online shopping activities during the lockdown phase all over the world.

48% of consumers purchased fashion, health, and entertainment-related products and items after watching their social ads.

Countries like the US, UK, and the Netherlands are also expecting to see a rise in the purchasing of fashion and clothing-related products within the next thirty days. This means that these two industries must put more efforts to reach customers who are waiting to buy these things once the lockdowns lift completely.

Another category for which consumers responded was Grocery items. Around 56% of this survey respondents want to see grocery ads that announce sales and new deals on grocery items, while 54% of respondents are looking forward to ads related to the customers’ safety and precautions. 43% of these respondents are looking for seasonal products, and 7% of consumers believe that grocery items should not advertise now.

Google is revamping its Chrome Cleanup feature for users to scan as well as remove unwanted programs on their PCs. The tool can be seen in Chrome Canary Settings under Safety Check tab (chrome://settings/safetyCheck). It was first reported by Techdows.

The Software Removal feature was first introduced by Google as a standalone program for Chrome browser and the tool was later renamed as Chrome Cleanup tool. The Software Removal tool allowed users to scan, and fix issuers caused due to Potentially Unwanted Software to Chrome.

Now, the company has integrated the Chrome Cleanup tool into Chrome settings, to make its accessibility more convenient. Moreover, the Sandbox engine joined with the ESET detection engine has been enhanced to identify extra bad actors that are causing damage to Chrome browser.

Currently, users can access the Cleanup tool from Settings > Advanced > Reset and Cleanup > Clean up computer. If a user clicks on the Find option, the tool starts to scan for software causing harm to their PC, particularly to Settings of the Chrome browser. You may also note that users might want to uncheck the checkbox prior to running the scan. Unchecking the checkbox will allow you to prevent sending system information, in addition to details related to the programs identified during the cleanup process, to Google.

A Safety check tool was also introduced to the Chrome browser in re-designed security and privacy settings. The Safety Check tool allows users to scan for Chrome update status, secure browsing technology, extensions, as well as passwords. Currently, Google is including the Chrome Cleanup tool to the Safety Check tool. According to Techdows, the new change is behind a flag in Chrome 85 Canary.

If you want to scan for unwanted software with the Safety check tool, visit Chrome://flags page in the Chrome Canary browser and search for the "Chrome cleanup tool in Safety Check tool". Now, select the ‘Enabled’ option and and restart the browser. Voila, you can go to Settings, and in open Safety check to find the "Unwanted software protection" option. An important point to note that the feature is still in development so it might not work properly for most users.

Facebook is rolling out a feature that will provide more insights about comments

$

Matt Navarra, a social media industry commentator and consultant, has shared in Tweet that Facebook is coming up with a feature that will give some insight information about comments on the platform.

When someone shares a post on Facebook and you comment on it, it lets you connect with other people more deeply. Commenting on each other’s posts is a popular way to engage with people and even carry out healthy discussions with one another on the platform.

Now, about these comments, two features are important to note: Reactions to these comments and Post Impressions.

With this new feature, Comment insights will be given in the form of change in reactions and change in post impressions.

Change in reactions is the difference between the number of reactions on posts compared to the number of reactions on similar posts from your Page or Profile that you have not commented on.

While, Change in Post Impressions, is the difference between the number of times these posts appeared on screens compared to the number of times similar posts from your Page or Profile that you have not commented or appeared on screens is estimated. It gives complete insight information about the level of engagement that you are achieving through the platform.

While this sounds to be an interesting feature, this news has received mixed reviews on Twitter. Some people are very happy and feel that it is going to be an awesome update, but some people are questioning whether this feature will be available for Facebook Pages and Groups or for Personal Accounts too? Secondly, people are even questioning if this feature will even be useful or not at all?

Some people are even suggesting that this may be a way of spying! Now, this sounds preposterous but having complete faith in all the tech apps is also a little difficult, and for a good reason!

People are still skeptical about Facebook and its policies, and about the security of personal data and information, especially after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Although Facebook has been trying to redeem its image in the eyes of the general public for a while now, it seems that it still has a long way to go.

Let us see how this feature turns out to be, if, and when it eventually rolls out.

Apple Has Been Granted A Patent For Developing Synthetic Group Photos

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the world in various ways. It seems that the post-coronavirus pandemic world will bring a huge change when it comes to taking group selfies. It has been reported that Apple has been granted a patent by the USPTO (the United States Patent And Trademark Office) for software that would help people generate synthetic group selfies even if all the recipients of the group photo are in distinct locations. The Protocol points out that this software could be a way for us to take group selfies for social media platforms even if we are trying to practice social distancing.

As the coronavirus continues to spread across the globe, and people are staying at homes to prevent the virus from spreading, it could be an interesting way for the users to generate group selfies even during the coronavirus lockdowns. According to the patent app, a person using an Apple device will be able to invite their friends to take part in a group selfie. Then, the software would arrange the invited users together in a single photo.

The patent application was first discovered by Patently Apple, and the group selfie generated by the software could include still photographs, live streaming photos, or video pictures that are already stored. With this software, you can keep the original selfie as well as the group version of the selfie generated by the software. According to the report provided by Patently Apple, this patent involves a computing device which can generate synthetic group photos.

Each user will capture a selfie on their smartphones, and then the background of all these selfies will be removed. Then, these images will be sent to one smartphone to be assembled in a synthetic group selfie. Moreover, the original user as well as the recipients of the group selfie can make changes to the group selfie generated by the software. For example, you could put yourself in a different location in the group selfie. It is not yet clear whether the new feature will be made available to iPads or iPhones. It is also possible that Apple makes this feature available to both iPads and iPhones.

The idea of a socially-distant group selfie looks for perfect for a moment during these coronavirus lockdowns being imposed across the globe. However, we can also expect that the new concept was not created by the developers particularly with the ongoing state of affairs in mind.

Apple initially filed for the patent back in the year 2018. However, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted the patent June 2nd of this year. The standard caveats apply to this patent as well like all the other patents. It is not indicated when the company will decide to use this software or how Apple will use it. Moreover, there is no indication of whether synthetic group selfies will ever become a thing for us or not, or whether any application related to this software will be rolled out or not.

Why Are Growth Marketers Drowning in Data?

$
0
0
It can sometimes feel like we are drowning in data but struggling to find actionable insights. Brands and advertisers face trying to accurately measure and attribute the performance of their campaigns, with little standardization between ad networks and platforms and many major internet companies operating their own walled gardens.

That’s where a trading desk has an advantage over Demand-Side Platforms (DSPs), which have become more widespread, but which are typically designed to handle the buy side of the advertising mix without the same level of insight. Automated trading desks offer advertisers more transparency, comparing performance across different in-app and web environments, across different devices, and even different languages and geographies.

Why a trading desk and not just another programmatic platform?

Programmatic platforms are specifically designed to automate the organization, bidding, and fulfillment of ad placement on a massive scale, thanks to their complex and very clever algorithms. What they are not designed to do is work across different and often disparate platforms.

Agency Trading Desks (ATDs) are used by many agencies to connect together DSPs, DMPs and other programmatic platforms to allow much simpler planning and buying at scale. The difference between these and the next generation of trading desks is the ability to combine those disparate media platforms with programmatic traffic through a single interface. It’s about reducing complexity.

We all know that a burning issue for everyone - both advertisers and tech platforms - is complexity. We are seeing a big increase in the complexity of campaigns, as advertisers are presented with ever more publications across many different media categories - plus the increasing use of social media influencers as part of the advertising mix.

Alongside the growing complexity of the media landscape, there is a demand from clients to know every metric of a campaign’s performance. Clicks, installs, and impressions help to show the Return on Ad Spend (ROAS). On top of that, advertisers want to see behavioral data such as in-app events, installs and conversions, daily and monthly active users and more.

The importance of APIs

No wonder ad tech companies are looking at trading desks as a solution. But most existing trading desks are not built to cope with the media landscape as it is today. The next generation of trading desks will use APIs to directly connect to the walled gardens we've already mentioned.

By using APIs to connect to inventory partners and attribution partners, advertisers can have a completely transparent and unbiased view right across their campaigns - all from a single dashboard. This is the basis of what we’ll inevitably see happening in the next few years; an ability to connect marketing inputs with real-world business outcomes, all in real-time, through multiple API integrations alongside more conventional RTB traffic and ad networks.

APIs are important not just because they allow us to connect media platforms like Facebook and TikTok that would otherwise be siloed. APIs can also drive more standardization between platforms, meaning automated media buying becomes possible with the right tools.

For example, influencer marketing has become a very important tool for reaching certain audiences but relies on time-consuming, manual planning - often down to dealing with influencers individually. Now, we are seeing platforms like Snap and Instagram building tools designed to allow marketers to build influencer campaigns at scale. By integrating these APIs into a trading desk model, it becomes possible to remove a lot of the difficulty in using these platforms, as one platform might aggregate hundreds of leading influencers with a combined reach of millions.

An easier way to build global campaigns

Building global campaigns means helping Western brands understand and access the Chinese and APAC markets, while also assisting Chinese brands make their first push towards Western consumers. This means working with platforms like Baidu, Tencent, Bytedance and Alibaba, and other up-and-coming platforms like Bilibili and Zhihu - plus Facebook, Google, Apple and more.

Collectively, those platforms reach billions of consumers every day. As campaigns become more complex and advertisers look to use many different channels within a single campaign, they need tools that let them understand campaign performance and return on investment. It’s about transparency and control.

That demand for transparency is why you will see more companies launching API-based trading desks in the next couple of years. Brands and advertisers will always want more transparency, and we know that the current ad tech landscape doesn’t really deliver this in its current form - which suggests the time is right for the next generation of trading desks to emerge.

Facebook moderators raise voice against a controversial post by Donald Trump, but the CEO and management remains silent

$

Recently, Donald Trump’s controversial post about police brutality stirred the sentiment of public and different tech apps. Surprisingly, Facebook’s otherwise vocal CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other officials from the management chose to remain silent about that post.

As a result of their collective silence, a group of old and current content moderators for Facebook joined hands with employees that are directly affected by the recent happenings of racism and Donald Trump’s post about the sensitive issue.

A group of four anonymous current moderators and five former moderators published a post on Monday on Medium, and they called out Facebook’s higher officials, CEO, and his management for their lack of adequate action against the president’s recent post that threatened the people who are protesting against police brutality and racism with violence.

This group of moderators intends to walk out with the protestors if Facebook allows them. They also mentioned in their post that they are urging Mark Zuckerberg and the management of Facebook to reconsider their decision to remain silent and choose to listen and honour the voices and protests from their Black employees and users.

Not only this group of moderators is condemning the CEO of Facebook, as much as 400 employees organized a virtual walkout last week to show their disapproval when Facebook refused to take any action against Trump’s post.

They could have easily done something. Trump’s post included a line that said that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts “This statement clearly glorifies violence and Twitter made sure to determine the post as a clear violation of its guidelines.

Facebook did not even bat an eyelash and that is disappointing. This lack of response is hurting the sentiments of its Black employees and users, and it is not fair to them.

Even after the virtual walkout, Mark Zuckerberg did not change his decision, while his employees kept showing their disapproval towards his lack of empathy. A software engineer at Facebook resigned from his job on the basis that Facebook is indirectly propagating weaponized hatred by not condemning Trump’s stance, and still, no one took notice!

The reason why these moderators could not remain silent too is that the nature of the job of these people leads them to go through long hours of reviewing gruesome content which brings them all sorts of mind-boggling experiences. Moderators from all other apps also have to go through such trying experiences, and this affects their psyche a lot. Many of them suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder even due to the type of content they go through daily.

Now add poor work conditions, non-disclosure agreements, no network or platform for financial security in unprecedented circumstances of a huge pandemic- all of these conditions add up and make it impossible for the moderators to stage an effective walkout without risking their incomes and even their rights to remain in the countries where they work and live. This is the reason why they chose to protest virtually and through their post on Medium. They are well aware of Facebook’s policies, and since they cannot walk out, they cannot remain silent too.

This post puts Zuckerberg in s very tight spot now, as this statement went across various moderation locations by a non-profit organization called Foxglove. This organization encouraged moderators from other platforms to reach out, raise their voice, join hands in protest, and sign on the statement by the mods of Facebook.

Facebook still has not responded or commented on any of these activities. Let us see how and when someone breaks their silence and speak up!
