Researchers at Facebook suggest using natural language models as fact-checkers

$

Recently, a paper was published on Arxiv by the researchers at Facebook and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In this paper, they suggested the use of natural language models as fact-checkers. These models are supposed to be trained on documents of the web and they possess a huge amount of worldly knowledge.

This can be attained by employing a verification classifier model, and when an original claim and a generated claim are given to it, it will determine whether the claim is supported or refuted, or whether the information is correct or incorrect.

Over the years, Facebook has faced numerous issues because of its lenient or non-existing fact-checking systems, and many times the platform has become a source of disinformation and false propaganda. This issue with Facebook has led the platform to lose most of the trust of people all over the world.

According to a survey carried by Zignal Labs, around 86% of American citizens do not fact-check the information they read on social media platforms. More than 61% of people are habitual of sharing, commenting, and liking posts that are recommended by their friends rather than checking for the facts and correctness of the news.

Facebook has been trying hard to redeem its image in the public eye by bringing in more methods and ways to stop misinformation and propaganda, but so far, it has not met with much luck.

Now, with this new research, the co-authors of this paper claim that fact-checking may become more reliable through natural language models. These models will have the ability to memorize information from the world. They will not only make the fact-checking system more efficient; they will also make the process faster by automating the training and verification steps that are conducted by human beings currently. These models will most likely eliminate searches over huge spaces of documents.

These end-to-end fact-checking language models will automatically mask entities like people, things, or places, and tokens or words to recover structures and syntax. This approach basically suggests that factuality often depends on the correctness of entities and the relation between them rather than the phrasing of a claim.

The language model then obtains the top predicted token or word, fills in the masked entity to create an ‘evidence’ sentence. After this, it will use the claim and evidence to obtain entailment features by predicting the ‘truth relationship’ between text pairs.

The researchers conducted these experiments on FEVER (Fact Extraction and VERification) which is a large-scale fact-checking data set containing more than 5.4 million articles by Wikipedia. With their publicly available pre-trained and best performing model BERT, they have managed to achieve 49% accuracy without having to retrieve any document or evidence selection.

However, when they examined BERT’s accuracy, it was found to be pretty short of the system tested against FEVER, which reached 77% accuracy.

This may be because of some limitations of the language models, but the findings suggest that there is a potential of model pretraining through techniques that can store and encode knowledge in a better way. On these grounds, fact-checking systems can be built which can be great at generative questions and answers.

YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video: These are the most downloaded streaming apps globally

Recently, the Sensor Tower Store intelligence platform lists the top streaming application downloads for May 2020.

As per this estimate, YouTube was found to be the most downloaded streaming app around the globe for May 2020.

It has seen over 29.3 million installs, which shows its growth by 28.3% within one year.

16% of its total downloads are estimated to be in the US, while 11.2% of the total downloads were in India.

The second most downloaded streaming app in the world for May was found to be Netflix. It has more than 23.3 million installs, which show that it has grown by 52.1% since last year.

Netflix also saw immense popularity in the US, which accounts for 17.2% of total downloads, and secondly in Brazil which accounts for 10.4% of total downloads all over the globe.

Amazon Prime Video is ranked at the third spot in Overall Downloads, Apple Store Downloads, and Google Play Downloads.

The lockdowns and social distancing measures that were implemented to avoid the spread of the COVID-19 is fairly accountable for such a drastic surge in the downloads of these streaming apps. People who were staying inside the bounds of their home started relying heavily on various tech apps, and to kill their time after work and study, streaming apps came to their rescue.

With these apps, people were able to watch and enjoy shows and movies with their families. Many people use YouTube to learn various online earning ways during these times of economic crunch in the entire world due to this pandemic.

So, the popularity and over-usage of these streaming apps are completely understandable, and this reflects in the surge in their downloads estimate too.

YouTube Kids ranks in the fourth position in the Overall Downloads and Google Play Downloads, while Tencent Video is on the fourth position in Apple Store Downloads.

Twitch app is ranking fifth in the Overall Downloads, Google Play Downloads, and Apple Store Downloads.

Disney+ is ranking sixth for Overall Downloads and Apple Store Downloads, while BOOYAH! the app is standing sixth in the Google Play Downloads.

Pluto TV, ZEE5, Hulu, Bilibili, Mango TV, and Viu are some of the other streaming apps that have made to the top 10 most downloaded apps in May 2020 around the world.

All these estimates from Sensor Tower exclude Apple apps and Google pre-installed apps and only comprise of estimates for unique installs only. Android estimates do not include any third-party stores, and figures are based on aggregate installs of all app versions, such as Facebook and Facebook Lite.

Facebook, Instagram and Twitter Should Produce Monthly Reports on Fake News, Say Top EU Officials

$

The EU has been very vocal about wanting to regulate social media platforms and other large tech enterprises, and with disinformation and fake news being one of the biggest problems that the world is facing right now the EU has been mulling over several potential ways in which they can tackle this issue. With TikTok joining its voluntary code of conduct, presumably in an attempt to distance itself from accusations that it might be somehow controlled by the Chinese government, two top EU officials have suggested that social media platforms should start sending monthly reports that would detail the fake news and misinformation that has been spread on their sites and how they have gone about trying to fight it.

With the covid-19 pandemic being at a critical juncture and disinformation posing a serious threat both to the health and wellbeing of citizens as well as to democratic institutions, as has already been seen with Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal, this level of oversight might not be all that difficult to secure. That said, the EU has been putting a lot of pressure on tech industries for quite some time now, and while it is a far too valuable a market for tech industries to start pulling out this much pressure could very likely shift the focus of the tech industry to emerging markets that might not have this level of regulation.

Then again, the EU putting so many regulations in place could inspire other countries to follow suit, something that would create a very different dynamic between consumers and the tech industry. Anyone would agree that oversight is definitely quite necessary, but how much of it can practically be implemented is the sort of question that would only end up being answered after some time has passed and the regulations themselves have been tested.

Is Twitter working on a feature that would enable users to react on tweets?

$

Jane Manchun Wong, a reverse engineer who discovers hidden and upcoming features in various apps recently posted on Twitter that the company is working on adding a new feature. This feature will enable users to add a reaction to posts and tweets.

This reaction service is very similar to what Facebook and some other social media platforms already provide. Now, as per Wong, Instagram is also working on a similar feature for its Instagram Direct.

Twitter already has the ‘reaction’ feature available for the direct messages, but if the new feature gets a green light, people will be able to express their likes and dislikes and other reactions on the tweets also.

Twitter has been working hard to make the platform as usable and friendly for the users as possible. Apparently, this tech giant does not have any qualms in adopting already introduced features in other apps, and that is a very nice thing. It is always good to adapt positive things from others, and if there is some positive feature in a popular application, there is no harm in integrating it into your system too.

Twitter is also expanding its own version of Snapchat like Stories, called Fleets. Now, with Snapchat, this feature is very famous, and Instagram also has features of Stories and Highlights in its own individual style.

Twitter seems to have adopted the Stories style from Instagram and Snapchat both. The Stories on Fleets also disappear after 24 hours, just like they do on Instagram. Fleets will allow you to post photos, texts, and videos on the platform.

Now, with the reactions feature, Twitter is going to make itself appear closer to Facebook. This will give the users of both platforms a sense of familiarity too.

While it is nice to adopt the positive features from other apps, it brings a question to one’s own uniqueness. If Twitter is providing the same experiences that other apps also provide, where is the unique factor in Twitter then?

So, let us hope that while Twitter is trying to give a familiar and close-knit kind of feel and experience to its users by taking up features from other apps, it does tweak them a bit to at least incorporate a unique style of its own.

Let us see how both Fleets and Reactions playout for Twitter once they go live eventually.

In an update, Twitter informed TheVerge that "the code that Wong found had been left over from a previous experiment and is no longer in use. The feature is not currently in testing."

Google Chrome is bringing a new autofill bar user interface for Android to provide a far greater user experience

$

Google Chrome’s autofill service is one of its most amazing features. It not only saves time, but it also makes work more efficient too.

However, Chrome for Android is working on bringing a new and more efficient autofill process for addresses, passwords, and information for billing services.

This new autofill service is most likely going to be present in the upcoming Chrome for Android version 85, which is set to release in August.

In the current versions of Chrome for Android, when you try to fill out a form that can be auto-filled, you are presented with a dropdown list of options below the form you are filling out. When you choose one of these options, your entire form fills out based on your choice. Now, although this design helps in saving a lot of time, there is a problem that arises sometimes. Chrome’s autofill suggestions take up a lot of screen space, plus there is no way to only use the autofill information for the particular box you are typing in.

This also means that if you want to mix and match the names and addresses, it is not possible for Chrome to autofill. You will have to do it all manually then.

In the new developing version, the user interface has been given a slicker look. The autofill bar will be just above your keyboard, and you will be offered to write in various addresses and payment methods in Material Design ‘chips.’ On the right-hand side, you will be given quick access options for your passwords, cards, and addresses.

Once you are inside these menus, you may select a particular portion of your addresses and cards. This will allow you to fill only the box that you are currently typing in. This way, you can easily mix and match portions of your addresses, avoid any misjudgment from Chrome while it is auto-filling your form. If you are using your normal shipping address, but you want to put in a different name or email address, you will be able to do this all with the new autofill user interface.

This sounds a great update and it is going to make the process of filling out forms easier, more direct, and straight forward, without any hassle. Let us see how it rolls out and how people react to it?

Android 11 Beta has finally launched with main themes focusing on People, Controls, and Privacy

Google was supposed to launch the latest version of Android in the Google I/O this year, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event got canceled. Instead, the Android team decided to launch the Android 11 in a virtual event, which was originally decided to be held last week.

However, Google later canceled the virtual launch event also to let people focus on more important discussions revolving around the police brutality and racial injustice. To honor these latest happenings, Google decided to launch the Android 11 Beta 1 in a very subtle manner.

The company released more than a dozen videos on YouTube that were originally scheduled for the I/O. It will also host 11 Weeks of Android to cover topics related to the User Interface, Google Play Store and Machine Learning. Also, Google plans to hold online Android 11 Meetups.

Android 11 Beta 1 focuses on three main themes:
  1. People
  2. Controls
  3. Privacy
Since Google intends to make Android less robotic and more people-centric and expressive, so it has added features that can make the Android reimagine the way humans converse on their phones.

There is a dedicated section at the top of the notification tab called ‘Conversations.’

This version also allows specific actions that let the users set reminders for various things and create shortcuts to threads on the home screen.

Another change that is going to be present in this version is the ability of users to pop-out conversations with the feature ‘Bubbles.’ These Bubbles give access to open a full conversation over whatever the user is doing with one click. Google highly recommends developers to adopt this API for Android 11.

There are some consolidated keyboard suggestions along with Voice Access using an on-device visual cortex that understands the content on the screen and its context. It then generates labels and access points for accessibility commands. This way, an operating system that can recognize and prioritize the most important people in your life can be created.

For Controls, this Android version has improved the controlling system of all smart home devices and Bluetooth accessories. Google Home supports the new API that can let you turn on or off the lights or adjust the brightness more easily.

There are some tweaks in the Media Controls settings too. They can let you switch the output of playing audio or video to headphones, speakers, or TV sets.

‘Now Playing’ is now integrated with Quick Settings. This feature can be enabled in Beta 1 from Developer Options > “Media resumption” before it is available for the official rollout.

As far as Privacy settings are concerned, Android 11 gives one-time permissions to let you limit app access to the device’s mic, location, and camera. However, these permissions will auto-reset if you do not use an app for a specific time period.

On the other hand, Google Play Store will also be reviewing all Android apps requesting background location access. Existing apps will be given an extension until 2021 to come to terms with this change.

The Android Beta Program is live now for early adopters and they can easily install it through an Over-the-air update.

Twitter is rolling out a new prompt for Android users to promote informed discussions before retweeting a story

$

Never judge a book by its cover. Similarly, never judge a piece of news by its headline alone.

Twitter is now trying to make sure that people stop sharing tweets and posts containing linked articles without reading them first. Sometimes people only read the headlines and share the post without reading the full article.

So, to help people with something so basic, Twitter is now testing a new feature for Android users that will prompt them to pause, take a breath, read the full story first, and then retweet it or comment on it if they wish.

This is one of the biggest challenges of modern times. People are so busy with everything else that they do not even have time to read the articles that they re-post and share with their friends. This is a major source of the spread of misinformation and false propaganda when posts get viral without anyone looking into their depth or correctness of their content.

This often becomes a major cause of social media wars and heated arguments. While it is healthy and quite encouraged to have discussions about relevant topics with other people and engage in social topics, but when both the parties are not completely informed about the topic, their debates are also futile and worthless, and mostly, it all turns into a complete wastage of time and energy.

So, now Twitter is taking this new approach to help promote informed discussions in an educated and knowledgeable environment on its platform.

This feature will be available for Android users for now, and it will encourage them to check the story for factual errors.

This is a great initiative by Twitter because it is a common practice where people on social media ask questions in the comments under the post when those questions have already been answered in the post itself. Although it is extremely silly, it has its dangerous effects too. As mentioned before, such a practice can become a source of falsified, misleading reports that can harm someone else. So, this becomes a vicious cycle of misinformation, and it is not at all encouraged by any app.

Many social media platforms have been trying to solve this problem for many years. In 2013, Slate and Chartbeat highlighted this issue in one of its articles about how people are quick to share posts on social media when they do not read them first.

Facebook also updated its News Feed algorithm in 2016 to see how much time do people spend on reading an article after clicking a link, or how quickly people share the articles, so that predictions can be made whether they spent some time reading those articles before sharing them or not?

Now, with Twitter’s new feature, there is definitely going to be friction that will enable the users to stop, read, and understand before jumping to retweet something. People will be encouraged to know what information they are spreading and whether it is authentic or not? Whether it will help anyone in real, or just cause harm to whoever reads it?

But on the downside, people may see it as an annoying hindrance, and that is going to be a little troublesome. But the motive behind Twitter’s action is good and its benefits are more, so let us wait and see how people actually react to this feature once it rolls out.

Virtual Reality Headsets Can Damage Eyesight - A Developer Warns!

$

While of course, Virtual Reality headsets are becoming more and more popular with the evolution of artificial reality, a software developer in UK has opposed using it because according to him, if a person keeps the VR headset on for hours every day, he or she may end up damaging their eyesight.

This is not his theory, but in fact, a practical experience as after a regular eye check-up, his eye doctor blamed the VR headset, which the developer owned and kept using for a quite a while, for the new problem in his vision.

The virtual reality developer, Danny Bittman shared his incident on Twitter and ever since his tweet, a lot of different objections have come out.

The Association of Optometrists has openly stated that they still couldn’t see anything in VR headsets that can potentially affect the eyesight of the person using them. However, on the other hand, Facebook-owned Oculus came out clear in their handbook that one out of 4,000 people may suffer from dizziness, seizures, eye or muscle twitching. The guidebook also stated that in case such a condition happens with a user, they should stop using the headset and see the doctor on an urgent basis.

Doctors have always been against the VR headsets as they believe it can put more stress on the eye because the process involves the brain to force visual stimuli in a rather different way than with normal computers. But as people became more crazy about the technology instead of focusing on the after-effects, later users began to complain about nausea and dizziness.

As one case has been Danny Bittman, he now has a new eye convergence problem that acts like dyslexia. Furthermore while explaining his problem he also said that his eyes jump when he tries to read anything written on a screen or book. This problem in his vision was small but after being a part of the virtual reality world as a developer for four years and wearing the headset for almost six hours a day, the problem is greatly intensified now. In fact, that is not all as this is also linked to headaches and vertigo.

Is The Virtual Reality Industry Ready To Cop Up With The Challenge?

In the last couple of years, fortunately for the fans, VR headsets have been improvised to come prepared with solutions related to eyesight problems.

There is already one well-known start-up called GiveVision that has created a device called SightPlus which promises to restore the vision of people whose eyesight may have deteriorated beyond repair all by projecting a video of the real world right in the integral part of the retina.

Moreover, there has also been a clinical trial at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the results showed it improved eyesight in 59 of the 60 participants. But nearly half of them said they would still like to wear the device for watching TV, reading or going to the theatre. The firm is also in plans of joining hands with Sony to develop the next device.

Just like every other technology, there are drawbacks and solving this would just be a matter of time.

Google’s once-famous blogging platform, Blogger announced an upcoming improved web design back in May 2020. Now, Blogger introduces a modern and more responsive web design on the web, and it is quite nice, and a little unexpected despite the prior ‘quiet’ announcement.

Blogger was once upon a time a very famous platform for people who wanted to write blogs and share their personal experiences with others over the internet. But after platforms like WordPress and Medium came into competition, Blogger’s popularity declined. It seemed that even Google started ignoring the app too because there were hardly any updates on the app for a long time.

However, last year in October, Google came up with a Material Theme revamp for Blogger for Android. This came as a huge surprise for many people because the updated Material Theme was very nice and provided the much-needed change in the overall design of the app. Although it did not bring any change in the functionality, it was still good to see that Google had not forgotten its Android app.

Now, this new updated web design is completely in line with all the previous Material Theme revamps, and it provides updates on the functionality front also.

There is increased spacing in every part of the whole dashboard. Articles are displayed in faint outlines and through a card theme.

The Stats page has been redesigned in a way to help you focus on important data from your blog, highlighting your most recent blog post.

Comment moderation has been enabled on the redesigned Comments page. On this page, it will be easier for you to connect with your readers and help improve your engagement levels with them.

The support for Search Operators on the newly designed Posts page has improved functionality now, as it helps you filter your posts on Blogger and page search results more efficiently and easily.

The new Editor page not only introduces table support, but it also enables better transliteration and provides a better and improved photo/video upload experience.

With improved Reading Lists, even if you are not writing, it has become easier to read blogs from other people and have a great time with the app.

Even the Settings page has been improved to help you manage all the controls and actions from one place, without any hassle of going from one tab to another.

As per Google, this improved web platform will bring in new improvements and features in the future.

This update will roll out for many users later in June 2020, while there is a ‘Try the new Blogger’ button at the bottom of the navigation drawer. From there, you can get an idea of the new web design’s experience. However, if you want to go back to the previous web design, you can always tap ‘Revert to Legacy Blogger’ from the same place in the navigation drawer.

However, from late July onwards, the ability to revert to the Legacy Blogger layout will not be possible.

Facebook joined hands with Google, Microsoft, and 15 other tech companies to fight child exploitation online. In this regard, the companies jointly announced the Project Protect to combat child sexual abuse on their platforms.

The Project Protect will work to protect kids online and expand their efforts for the span of the next 15 years. Antigone Davis, Facebook Global Head of Safety, further said that the brightest minds from the tech industry are working behind the Project Protect and the collaboration will surely help solve one of the biggest problems of society today.

The prime focus of Project Protect will remain on the five key aspects: tech innovation, collective action, independent research, information and knowledge sharing, and transparency and accountability.

In this regard, Facebook has made its photo and video-matching technologies open source. This would enable industry partners and other stakeholders to easily detect abusive content and hash-share for seamless communication with each other.

The social media giant further said that it is running PhotoDNA on all links shared on their apps from other sources to detect child exploitation from other areas of the World Wide Web. The company is also sharing all violating content with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Facebook announced a similar safety tool for its Messenger last month as well. The new feature provides tips to users on how they can spot suspicious activity and encouraging user’s under 18 to be warier when talking to adults. They also emphasized the users to block or ignore a contact when interaction doesn’t seem normal.

Here’s How Social Media Stars and Influencers Earn Money in 2020

$
0
0
Becoming a social media star or influencer is something that a lot of people are doing these days, and it’s fair to say that kids are frequently making it their dream to become this kind of a celebrity and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that these kinds of stars have a tendency to show their lifestyles as being quite glamorous.

However, with all of that having been said and out of the way, it is important to note that earning money tends to be a very proactive process for an influencer, so whether you are trying to learn how you can earn money as an influencer or perhaps you are just curious, learning about how influencers tend to earn their money is something that most people would most definitely find to be highly worthwhile.

According to a survey that asked 69 influencers how they earn money, brand sponsorships seem to be by far the most popular way for influencers to earn money. It seems that about 78% of all influencers seem to earn money in this manner, with paid ads coming in next at about 58%. These might sound like the same thing but they are quite different. Brand sponsorships involve the clothes you wear and the items you use in your videos, but paid ads are where you break from the stream of content and bring attention to whatever it is that you are advertising.

There are a number of other ways in which an influencer could potentially end up earning a lot of money as well. Affiliate marketing and commissions both come in at around 40% which is understandable since they can often be really big earners for a lot of people. A smaller but still significant percentage, between 25%-30%, of influencers also said that appearance fees and merchandise sales are a big earner for them. A pretty small percentage, about 6%, said that they rely on follower donations. The low percentage is understandable since these are influencers we are talking about, not content creators who often rely more on follower donations.

A somewhat more significant percentage is that 14% of the influencers that responded said that they had not earned any revenue yet. This means that there are influencers out there that are broke, so if you want to become one then it is highly recommended that you look into diversifying your revenue streams until a point comes where you can finally rely on them and can try and make the most of them without having to rely on a day job which can be frustrating and draining for a lot of people.

YouTube is planning to allow creators to customize the look and feel of their channels and brings in Creator Mixes for the viewers

$

0
YouTube Studio will soon start allowing creators to play with the look and feel of their channel by customizing the layout and some other features.

This news has come as a surprise for many YouTubers because this is the first time that YouTube will be giving any such liberty to the creators. It is like giving the creators control over their channels, and that was not YouTube’s style before. The creators could work with the channel headers and video thumbnails before only, so this is going to be a great experience for them when YouTube rolls out this update in the future.

As per the Creator Insider, the idea behind this new step is to make the YouTube Studio a creator’s destination for all things the channel is editing. So, the ability to customize their channel’s look and feel directly within YouTube Studio is going to allow them to make their channel’s layout, branding, and all basic information stand out with the creator’s unique creative style.

The company further explains that it is launching this feature for the mobile app first. The reason that they have given for this approach is that this feature is meant to give a great experience to the creators, but the users mostly watch YouTube videos on their mobile devices. So, to make the customizations stand out more prominently in front of the maximum number of users, they are launching it for mobiles first.

YouTube is redesigning the ‘featured channels’ option which lets the users see a collection of selected channels on their home page. By making it completely mobile-friendly, YouTube will be converting the ‘featured channels’ option into a ‘channel section.’ This will make it visible on the mobile device as well as on the desktop.

YouTube has not given any idea when this update will roll out and become available for the creators.

Apart from this update, YouTube has just launched a feature called ‘Creator Mixes.’

When a user watches a video, in the ‘Up next’ suggestions by YouTube these Creator Mixes will be featured. This will basically give the viewers a way to look in the top-recommended content from a new channel.

A mix is an algorithmically generated playlist of any channels’ content. So, these Creator Mixes will help the viewers catch up with new updates from the channels that they already like. They may have subscribed to those channels too, but they might have missed a few past videos that these Mixes will help them catch on now.

These Creator Mixes are personalized for individual users, and that is the reason they can perform better than playlists made by other users or channel creators. Also, Playlists are static, so they do not serve the personalized experience to the user like these Creator Mixes will do. Since YouTube’s algorithm already knows what a user has watched and what they have not watched, through the Creator Mixes, it will prioritize to show the latest content, maybe based on the content the user already likes.

At the moment, these Creator Mixes are displayed in the ‘Up next’ suggestions when a video is being watched. However, YouTube plans to make them display in other places like channel pages and search results.

Create banners for your Lists and even hide their top tweets from your home on Twitter for Android now

$
0
0
A few weeks ago, Twitter announced some customizations for Twitter Lists particularly for Desktop and iOS users that allows users to put images of their choice as banners for their Lists. And according AndroidPolice Twitter is also rolling out the same Lists customization feature on Android. Additionaly, Android users can hide the content of the lists from their timeline..

A list is basically a curated group of Twitter accounts. To put it simply, Lists organize a user’s Twitter followers as the user picks and chooses who belongs in which list based on any criteria, like shared hobbies, common groups, mutual friends, favorite influencers, etc. A user can create a list or subscribe to an already created list, and when they view a list timeline, it will show Tweets from only the accounts that are on that list.

With new customizations, Twitter is trying to make these lists more relevant and upgraded.

The feature of creating banners for lists on Apple devices and PCs rolled out just a few weeks ago, and it is now available on the latest alpha version of Android. But for some users, it is randomly getting enabled on their phones regardless of their version.

To customize the header image or banner of a list, all a user needs to do is to open a list and tap on the ‘Edit list.’ Upload an image by tapping on the image upload button. This uploaded image can be cropped too, as it is customized into two sizes, a wider banner, and a square-shaped thumbnail. Once it is all done, save the image and the user will be able to see the new banner on top of their list.

The point to notice here is that this banner will only be displayed when an individual list is opened, and as soon as the user starts scrolling down, it will disappear. It will not be visible on lists tabs on the homepage.

Now, Twitter is providing another interesting feature for these lists. A user can hide the top tweets of a list from their timeline by clicking on the three-dot icon at the top-right corner in a list’s page and enabling the ‘Don’t show these Tweets in Home’ option. If a user does not follow some accounts, their tweets would already not show in the timeline, but this feature is especially significant for accounts that a user follows and their tweets show in their timeline as well as in the lists that they are added into. So, to avoid seeing duplicate tweets, a user can choose this option and make the lists and personal timeline more organized.

Both these features are live on Twitter v8.49.06 alpha for all users. They may also be available as server side-switch for many people. It will be interesting to see how people will react to these customizations in lists. They sound pretty interesting and will definitely make the lists better in all ways.

Along with improvements in Lists, Twitter is also testing a Moment Maker for desktop users, i.e. according to Jane Manchun Wong.

Study Reveals How Social Media Algorithms Create Echo Chambers

While social media has definitely helped to bring the world together, in many ways it has caused just as many problems as it has solved. One of the problems associated with a lot of social media platforms is that they often end up turning into echo chambers also known as filter bubble.

While the people that use Facebook most likely have a wide variety of beliefs, there are billions of users on the platform after all, they are unlikely to encounter each other and so might falsely end up thinking that what they believe is actually the norm.

There is a very concrete reason behind this, one that a recent studyrevealed has a lot to do with active choices platforms like Facebook and Twitter often make in terms of moderating the user experience. These two social media sites use centralized algorithms among other processes that curate a user experience that would conform to the comfort zone of said user.

If you believe a certain thing and post about it often, it is unlikely that you would end up coming across someone with an opposing viewpoint because the algorithm simply wouldn’t allow it.

While you might encounter views that you don’t agree with from public figures, you would most likely not interact with any normal people who hold such views, and so your echo chamber would be complete.

The motives behind the creation of such algorithms were probably not so insidious. Social media platforms want users to keep using them for as long as possible, and creating a zone where their beliefs are validated can help facilitate this. However, platforms such as Reddit and Gab were found to have far less of a separation between users with different beliefs.

This seems to indicate that a less centralized form of social media optimization might be a better route to follow, although the massive success of Twitter and Facebook, far exceeding that of Reddit and Gab, does indicate that the creation of echo chambers might facilitate faster growths in userbase. Regardless, the creation of echo chambers can cause a lot of societal problems, so perhaps it is time that things changed in this regard.

WhatsApp is testing several new features for the Android and iOS versions. All these features are under development and will be released in future updates.

One such improvement that WhatsApp is bringing in is new changes in Storage Usage. The redesigning of Storage Usage is also being tested at the moment, and it is not known when the actual update will roll out eventually.

As per a tweet by WABetaInfo, several other new features are in the pipeline for Android versions. However, WhatsApp releases all its features on all the operating systems, so iOS may also receive the update soon after it is released for Android.

Storage Usage is the section that manages your messages and chats in a detailed, organizational manner. Now, with the new update, WhatsApp is going to redesign the Storage Usage space while adding some new tools that will give a new definition to the feature.

WhatsApp is also adding some default filters that will enable the users to find specific messages quickly and without having to go through any hassle.

For example, there might be a filter for forwarded files. Skimming through specific forwarded files in specific chats will become easier through this feature.

WhatsApp will also allow finding Large Files quickly. This will help the users sort and View the larger files separately, in a more organized manner. This will also help in saving these Large files in specified folders. A thought comes to mind that how amazing it would be if WhatsApp decides to improve the Storage capacity of the newly designed Storage Usage so that accommodating larger files does not become so overly daunting. But then, it depends on the phone's storage as well. So, let us see how Large Files feature will function in the end.

In the Storage Usage, a Photos row will be available that will show all the photos shared in a particular chat.

Another interesting update is going to be the Sort button. This will give the user options to view results from Newest to Oldest and by their respective Size.

Once a user puts this filter on, WhatsApp will update the section and show updated results to the users.

These are some very interesting features and it is hard to wait for them to come live eventually. There is a possibility that the features might undergo some changes when they finally roll out. So far, they are going through various tests and developmental processes. But the news and the ideas behind these features alone are enough to make the users excited and start waiting anxiously.

Searching a specific message in long chats has always been difficult. Although WhatsApp provides a Search through key words option too, these new filters will hopefully make the process easier and less time-consuming.

Let us see how people react to these updates when the final product rolls out in the future.

Since the coronavirus pandemic hit the world, everything seems to have changed. The world is now in the process of producing some ‘new norms’ for better functionality and to carry on their duties and responsibilities.

Due to the lockdown and social distancing implementations, working from home is one of these new norms of our society now. It is new for many people as waking up in the morning and going to offices used to be a regular routine for most people all around the globe.

Due to this new trend and its benefits, recently Twitter, Facebook, and some other tech companies have even announced that if their employees desire to work from home even after the pandemic is over, they will allow that for them.

Since it is still a new thing for many people, a team from Bannersnack has put together some tips and tricks to stay productive while working from home.

According to them, three things are needed for successful remote working:
  1. A well-structured, well planned day to achieve the optimal effects and carry out all the necessary tasks on time.
  2. Self-imposed deadlines to not become a victim of procrastination.
  3. Small breaks between your tasks to refuel your energy levels.
Choosing a favorite working spot is very important for your productivity and efficacy. Make sure that your spot has enough natural light and has something to keep you inspired while working from home.

It is also important to stay focused and take care of all the distracting factors that may hamper your work from home.

Cold Turkey, Proud from Apple Store, and RescueTime, are some of the important tools that can increase your productivity.

Zoom, G Suite, and Slack are some important apps for team collaboration and meeting purposes.

By checking the calendar, marking important dates and events, writing down all your tasks, and setting your work hours are also imperative to structure your day according to all your tasks and duties.

You must work on your communication skills to improve the productivity of your work. It is good to respond quickly to important emails and messages.

When you are planning a call/video call meeting, make sure that there are no distractions like TV or phone noise around. Also, have a meeting agenda prepared ahead and have someone to conduct the meeting.

Lunch break is extremely important for your physical and mental well-being. So, do not skip your lunch, and do not keep working while having your lunch.

For your mental peace and growth, it is important to log off once your work is done and spend some time with your family members and in learning something new and interesting.

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will enable users to Search their Messages by Date

As per a recent report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing various new features and adding new tools in Storage Usage. Some new default filters to sort out messages are also being developed.

Another update that WhatsApp is currently testing is the ability that will let the users Search for Messages by Date.

This amazing update is in its alpha testing phase, so its final release will most likely take some time. But it is reported that once it comes live, it will roll out for Android and iOS both simultaneously.

This feature will especially be beneficial for people who frequently use WhatsApp for work purposes. It will allow users to search messages by the date they are sent in the entire chat history or specific chat windows. This will be helpful to trace important work-related messages and files sent through WhatsApp from one person to the other. This feature will also allow tracing work histories, message backlogs with the help of certain dates. This is going to be a good way to target workplace and enterprise communication.

Users will also be able to chronicle previous important files and messages, and this is an imperative part of workplace communication. But there is a little downside with this too. Most workplace messaging has to occur with the administrators and the IT team overseeing the communication. So, the usage of WhatsApp with this new feature may still remain limited.

WhatsApp already allows the users to search messages in the entire chat history as well as in specific windows by using keywords. But the problem that arises in this method is that it produces all the messages from all chats that contain that keyword, and search still requires the user to skim through all those highlighted messages to finally find what they have been looking for.

Another way to search for particular messages and files is to manually scroll through the entire chat, and that is not only tedious, but it is very time-consuming too.

Searching by particular dates will most likely make the search more efficient, faster, and less time-consuming. This is going to add a lot of appeal to the app because time is a factor that matters to everyone, especially in busy and draining times. Already people in the entire world are going through a major pandemic and the difficult times add more to their anxiety while draining them emotionally. So, it is quite nice to know that WhatsApp is trying to introduce new features that will provide great value in lesser time and are not mentally exhausting.

This feature is in its earliest developmental phases, and it is not known when it will eventually roll out for the users of iOS and Android.

Another update that might come in the future versions of WhatsApp is that a single account will probably be made to run on multiple devices. If this also happens in reality, both these features will improve the charm and appeal of the app and make it stand out amongst all the other apps.

eSports in Finland

In the normal process of human thinking, eSports, which is a form of sport competition using video games, cannot be classified as a sport. There are only 56 countries in the world where Electronic Sports are recognized as legitimate, though the International Esports Federation (IESF) actively fights for their global acceptance. The EISF is assured that soon every country on the planet will participate in eSports competitions, since this discipline is gradually gaining in popularity among viewers. There are valid reasons why we need to change our way of thinking about video games competitions and accept eSports as an authentic sport discipline.

The IESF’s enthusiasm for eSports is shared most wholeheartedly in Finland, where people’s favorite pastime appears to be gambling and playing video games. About 80 percent of Finnish people gamble, and wagering on eSports gives them new thrill that betting on other sports does not provide. Aware of gamblers’ interest in eSports betting, many online casinos, or, in Finnish, “nettikasinot,” have begun to include eSports in their arsenal of traditional sports betting products. As elsewhere in the world, Finns engage most in betting on League of Legends and CS:Go competitions. When they do not attend live eSports events, Finns watch eSports tournaments over the internet helped by such streaming services as YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Gaming, and Stream TV.

eSports betting differs from other online games or regular sports betting by its unique payment system. There are two currencies gamblers can choose when betting on the outcome of eSport games: cash and so-called skins, which are virtual items from video games. Cash payments are easy to understand, since they are processed in the same manner they are processed when people bet on regular sports events. Skins are used in games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) and are connected to the most typical function of the items appearing in them: changing their appearance. Lovers of these games know how differently their in-game avatar, equipment, and weapons can look, when players wish. They can alter the appearance of, say, their knives, making them red, grin, or silver. Their shape can also be changed, though not their functionality. In CS:GO game, skins can be transferred between players, which turn them into a kind of currency, similar to a casino chip, whose colors also differ. Although some other games employ a similar skin system, CS:GO skins are now the dominant currency in the skin betting market.

Apart from betting on eSports competitions online, Finns enjoy playing Electronic Sports. In 2018, Finland was ranked the fifth among eSports playing countries. Finnish young people seriously hone their gambling skills not only at home but also at eSports events, summer camps, and even in colleges. After the Finnish Olympic Committee established eSports as a part of the Finnish sports community in 2019, Finnish Assembly began organizing the bi-annual eSport event at the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre, Messukeskus. In this center, the Finnish gaming teams get together to compete with each other. The highest earning Finnish eSport teams are Team Gigantti with earnings above $223,849, IGame.com ($86,225), and Team Finland ($58,000).

Finland also boasts several of the strongest players in the world. The player nicknamed JerAx, whose real name is Jesse Vainika, is Finnish and is ranked the first among 1089 Dota 2 players worldwide and the first among the fifteen Finnish players. JerAx has earned $6,469,215 for the whole Dota 2 professional career. Matumbaman, or, in reality, Lasse Aukusti Urpalainen, comes the second with total earnings of $3,541,536. Another Finnish eSport player is Topias Taavitsainen, nicknamed Topson, who for his entire Dota 2 professional career has earned so far $2,290,122.

Seeing how much the top eSports players earn, Finnish young people also dream of a similar career. The Finnish government is highly sympathetic towards their professional aspirations. In addition to organizing competitions, it also gathers young Finns at the Nordic eSports Academy Bootcamp at KAMP. It is the four-week summer bootcamp designed for casual gamers, rising eSports stars, and professional players. Its general goal is to improve the students’ knowledge of the eSports industry, its history, milestones, and possible future development. The students also have an opportunity to refine their playing skills, bringing them to the professional level. Classes attended by the participants include game play coaching, eSports business coaching, physical wellness coaching, mental wellness coaching, and advanced player testing and analysis. After the completion of the bootcamp, the students receive credits that can be counted towards their higher education.

The Finnish government is so optimistic about the bright future of the eSports that it has even introduced eSports course in the curriculum of some Finnish colleges. Now eSports can be approached scientifically and studied analytically. The college course on eSports includes a module on media training, which teaches students to create impressive media profiles and develop good communication skills.

In the time of the coronavirus pandemic, eSports are undergoing a significant test. Like the online gambling, eSports is one of the industries that has been profiting during these three lean months. The sector’s ability to survive during the pandemic suggests that Finns are right to invest in its development.

Survey Reveals Marketing Professionals Opinions on a Post Pandemic World

While the Covid-19 pandemic is still in full swing, reaching an alarming peak in several countries around the world, it has become clear that the crisis is at its worst point and sooner or later things will start to calm down. Hence, professionals in several industries are starting to look towards a post pandemic world, and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that they would have to rebuild their industries. The marketing industry has always been significant, and a recent survey, conducted by 614Group, revealed what marketing professionals think a post pandemic world might look like for their industry.

According to the survey, about 51% of marketing professionals think that virtual events will continue to be important, even when live events start back up again. 27% of respondents also stated that they don’t expect live event attendance levels to return to normal anytime soon, with only 19% saying that they expected things to get back to normal once the pandemic is over. This reveals a somewhat bleak outlook for the live performance industry, but regardless the marketing industry will have to optimize its approach based on what would incite the desired audience responses.

While marketing professionals don’t expect a resurgence in the live event scene anytime soon, they do seem to be optimistic about their own jobs getting back to normal. About half of respondents either stated that they miss human contact with team members or the networking opportunities that come with being able to meet people from outside your circle.

The surveyed marketing professionals also expect mixed reality experiences that combine AR and VR with virtual event technology to become the norm. Remote events are becoming increasingly likely, and it would be interesting to see how this impacts the trajectory that technological development will take in the coming years.

Facebook launches New Investment Program to keep an eye on the new app developments

With new apps continuously developing in the digital age, Facebook is feeling threatened by the rising popularity of other competitors, and rightfully so.

If a rival app becomes more popular amongst the masses, it will eat up Facebook’s market share. So, Facebook’s constant insecurity is understandable, because this is exactly what Facebook did to MySpace back in 2008.

This is the reason why Facebook keeps introducing new things to keep an eye on the functionality and working progress of these apps.

Facebook launched a New Product Experimentation team in July 2019 for the sole purpose to develop new types of experiences for people and to try various ideas by creating small and focused apps to align them with useful and engaging features for people.

Through this team, Facebook has been able to deduce the rising trends and tools gaining popularity in other apps like TikTok, Clubhouse, Pinterest, etc. By doing this, Facebook experiments and develops a small app or a feature in its platform that is similar in functionality or better in some ways.

In this way, Facebook gains an edge over other apps and that is how it does not let its competition gain the popularity that it would if Facebook does not keep a constant check on it.

Now, the NPE team will not only look into rising app trends, but it will also look to invest in rising social apps and tools before they become dangerous competitors in the digital world, that's according to Axios.

Google also employs such anti-competitive behavior, and this is the key to its success too. Detecting these rising tools and latching onto them as soon as possible before they can get a chance to develop into dangerous rivals for Facebook and Google is a common way to keep growing and keep gaining popularity.

Previously also, before the NPE team, Facebook used the Onavo tracking tool in early 2013 and it was forced to shut down last year only. It was meant to help limit background data and personal information usage by various apps. But it also tracked the apps that users opened frequently, and then it used to give these insights to Facebook. This way, Facebook used to get an idea about the apps that used to become famous, and before they could develop into rivals, Facebook would acquire them or create something like them.

Now with the NPE Team’s new investment fund, Facebook will continue to keep other apps and their features under constant surveillance, and this is going to be interesting to watch. Because while Facebook is being a ‘peeping Tom,’ officials, app regulators, and developers are also constantly scrutinizing its activities, and whenever they get a chance, they forcefully shut down Facebook’s spying resources as they did with Onavo.
