Google Maps Will Now Use AR Tech to Improve Location Detection

$

Have you ever been using Google maps hoping to get to where you need to go only for your location to be ever so slightly off? Things like that are about to become a thing of the past thanks to Google’s foray in to the world of augmented reality. While most people tend to think of Lens when they think about augmented reality, the truth of the situation is that Maps is also involved in this sort of thing and incorporating AR into this would help Google improve location detection by a pretty large margin.

While GPS was traditionally used for this sort of thing, Google posits that GPS doesn’t work as well in the dense urban jungles that most of us tend to live in. What’s more is that GPS can often fail whereas AR has the potential to keep going no matter what ends up happening at the end of the day. With all of that having been said and out of the way, it is important to note that the AR feature in Google Maps is called Live View and it is an important part of what makes your experience the best that it can be.

Utilizing Live View can help Maps learn about the direction that you are facing and calibrate itself accordingly. This indicates that Maps is about to get extremely accurate, so much so that you might just be able to get some truly specific locations right which is a problem that a lot of people have been hoping would be solved at some point in time. When you open up Live View and take part in the calibration process, you will find that it is much more accurate than the figure 8 movement that GPS generally requires. iOS users will have to wait for this feature but Android users with high end phones would be able to use it immediately.

UGC Content on Instagram Is More Effective At Driving Purchases As Compared To Twitter and YouTube

Recently, Visual Objects published a report on content trends. Aerie, Starbucks, and Netflix are among those brands that see varying customer reactions to UGC (user-generated content) or branded content on social platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook-owned Instagram. According to the report, users are more likely to prefer UGC on Instagram as compared to Twitter or YouTube. In comparison, consumers are less driven to make a purchase from UGC on YouTube, and people find branded content on Twitter more authentic.

When respondents to the survey were displayed examples of user-generated content and branded content, their reactions varied by brand and social media platform. The survey discovered that 61% of consumers think that UGC about Starbucks is likely to influence them in making a purchase, while 39% said that branded content about Starbucks is more influential.

68% of consumers stated that Netflix’s original tweet about the show ‘Selling Sunset’ was more likely to influence them in purchasing as consumers tend to find branded content on Twitter more authentic. In comparison, only 32% said the same about the user-generated content tweet that Netflix shared on Twitter.

The survey suggests that these varying customer preferences for UGC or branded content on social platforms can impact the advertising strategies for retailers as well as brands. The finding that Instagram is a better platform for user-generated content such as reviews, product demonstrations, and social media hashtags, as compared to YouTube or Twitter at driving purchases has implications for mobile advertisers seeking to reach customers during the pandemic.

Swiping through photos of friends and family members on Instagram is how several people pass their idle time during the coronavirus lockdowns. It is easy for users to swipe or scroll past sponsored posts that brands pay hefty sums to generate and promote on social media platforms. This is the reason why several companies are getting consumers to do advertising for them using UGC.

Advertisers can identify which accounts post content related to products, or search for hashtags to find users talking about a particular brand. According to Visual Objects, UGC also saves money for advertisers facing budget cuts during the pandemic. Businesses are recommended to make their Instagram content as authentic as possible to be more effective. 60% of respondents stated that they were more likely to purchase from a user-generated picture on Aerie’s Instagram accounts as compared to its branded content.

Customers prefer branded content on YouTube for product demonstrations rather than ‘unboxing’ clips that an individual unwrapping a product. 71% of consumers stated that they prefer a branded video from FabFitFun, a subscription box service. In comparison, only 28% think that a user-generated video would influence them to purchase a product.

Twitter Removes Nearly 15,000 Tweets of Covid-19 Misinformation

Twitter has been one of the most proactive platforms when it comes to things like trying to prevent misinformation surrounding the novel coronavirus from spreading. A big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that there can be a lot of harm that could happen if misinformation is spread. The social media platform has removed thousands of tweets, nearly 15,000 in fact, that had misinformation about the pandemic since the new rules were instated in March. What’s more is that around four and a half million accounts that had been guilty of trying to spread misinformation have been challenged.

There are three criteria that a tweet needs to be meet in order to be deleted. The first criteria is that the tweet should be presented as a fact about the pandemic or something related to it. The second criteria is that the information presented should be false, and demonstrably so according to experts on the matter. The third criteria is that the information should be dangerous in some way, shape or form, so this isn’t just about misleading tweets although these do end up getting a warning attached to them so that the likelihood that people would follow them would end up being lower than they might have been otherwise. Any tweet that meets all three criteria would be deleted immediately.

Twitter’s information page about the pandemic has been visited over two billion times by over 160 million unique visitors. What this means is that this social media platform is taking some pretty concrete steps towards making things better, and this is something that should definitely be commended in some way, shape or form. Not all social networks are doing a good job in this regard, so the fact that Twitter is taking so many right steps is a sign that they might just a somewhat more ethical social media platform.

New Study Reveals That the First Organic Result in Google Search Has an Average CTR of 28.5 Percent

A study of billions of search results revealed that over 25% of users click the first organic result in Google Search. According to a recent study, the first organic search result in Google Search has an average CTR (click-through rate) of 28.5%. The study was published by Sistrix which analyzed more than 80 million keywords as well as billions of search results to understand how users engage with Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

The study revealed that after the first position, the average click-through rate sharply falls. The second organic search result in Google Search has an average click-through rate of 15%, while the third positions have an average click-through rate of 11%. The click-through rate continues to fall after the first position, and the 10th position in Google Search has an average click-through rate of 2.5%.

It is well-known that people rarely venture into the second page of search results in Google Search. However, what is less known are the huge differences in clicks among the first ten organic results in Google Search. The latest study published by Sistrix aims to further the understanding of click-through rate within the first search result page of Google Search.

Here, we will discuss more key findings from the study, and information on what could be the factors that may cause the click-through rate for position 1 to swing between 12.7% and 46.9%.

SEOs need to understand how the click-through rate of Google Search results can be affected. The jobs of many SEOs involve ranking content of a website on the first page of Google Search. Driving traffic to those webpages is more crucial than ranking those pages on the first page of Google Search. What is the benefit of ranking content on the first page of Google if no one clicks on it?

That is where Sistix’s study comes in, as the study reveals that the amount of traffic generated by each position on the first page varies wildly. For instance, a search result in the second position of the first page on Google Search results will generate an average of 3X more clicks as compared to a search result in the sixth position of the first page on Google Search results.

According to this study from Sistrix, a result in the first position generates a click-through rate over ten times higher as compared to a ranking at the tenth position of the first page on Google Search results. You may also note that search results on the 2nd page of Google Search have a click-through rate of less than 1% for each position. The study also discusses some of the factors that can influence the click-through rate of each position on the first page of Google Search results.

The Search Engine Results Page (SERP) layout is the greatest factor that impacts the click-through rate of Google Search results. Although the majority of queries generate the traditional 10 blue links Search Engine Results Page (SERP) layout, specific queries also generate other types of SERP layouts.

A sitelinks extension in results boost click-through rate as a result in the first position with a sitelinks extension will generate a click-through rate of 46.9%. Likely, it is because Google displays sitelinks when a user searches for a particular website. Search Engine Results Pages with featured snippets have a CTR that is 5.3% below average which indicates that there is no benefit to a page showing a featured snippet in results. The study reveals that second and third positions have an above-average CTR if the first result returns a featured snippet.

SERPs with knowledge panels also receive fewer clicks because users get the answers they require in the knowledge panel. If the top of the SERP if full of Google Ads, CTR falls below average for all positions on the first page. Google Ads reduce the CTR by 10%, while Knowledge Panels reduce by 12 percentage points.

These are only a few of the different Search Engine Results Page layouts examined by this study. Overall, the new study proves that keyword search volume is not the only factor that needs to be considered while evaluating potential clicks.

Facebook Might Soon Be Able to Stream Music Videos

$

While Facebook has managed to reign supreme in the world of social media, the social networking platform is not content with resting on its laurels and generally wants to expand into as many different areas as possible. One area that Facebook has been trying to get into for quite some time now is video streaming but it has been facing quite a bit of difficulty in this department and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that YouTube has always reigned supreme in this regard.

Facebook has managed to make itself a decent place for video content in spite of the fact that there are so many roadblocks but one area of streaming that it hasn’t managed to break into at all is music videos and the reason behind this is that artists that are signed to US record labels often can’t give Facebook the rights to their videos which means that they can only post at most a snippet of what they are offering and people would end up going to YouTube in order to facilitate their watching of the entire video that they had been hoping to see.

This issue might soon become a thing of the past because Facebook has managed to bring three of the biggest record labels in the US, namely Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group, to the table. The discussions started in December and they have slowly lead to things improving on Facebook. Now licensed music can at the very least run in the background of big videos on the platform and this is definitely a step in the right direction. While it is still unknown whether or not Facebook would get the rights it wants, the progress made seems to indicate that it might just happen soon which would pose a problem for YouTube.

Reddit introduces a new feature for its users, which would let them add more than one media files to their posts

$

Reddit is a famous social networking forum with various types of communities, in which members post content related to the community and other members can vote on it as well. Recently it has come out with another feature for its members named as Image Galleries that allow the user to add almost twenty attachments to their post, for example GIFs and pictures. This feature would be available for iOS devices at the moment and would be introduced for Android soon.

This new arrangement for posting would have a small number counter on the top right corner of the post, and we would be able to go through all these pictures included in the post by scrolling to the side. Not long-ago Instagram had also come out with a similar feature to this.

Is it further elucidated by Reddit as they have mentioned that this “Image Gallery” feature has been in demand by many different communities like Food, DIY, etc. This is because many times the members want to show a product like clothes, dishes, make up looks, designs, artworks using different perspectives and angles. They might also want to add to that and give instructions in a slide or give links or names of the things they used to do a particular task. This may also lead to many brands making an appearance on Reddit as they would be able to add URLs to each picture in the post. This may also help them get more popular as many of their customers might also add their website’s links to a particular product.

For a member to post an Image Gallery, the members would get an option to choose “Image Post” when they are creating a new post. They can then select a total of twenty attachments which can be later re-organized. They could then add a caption, post title, or a URL for every image and could also put on tags that warn the users about spoilers, etc., and then they can post it.

The only disadvantage to this feature is that the moderators of each community would have to turn the Image Gallery on, due to which it will not be accessible to all discussion taking place.

This feature would help Reddit establish further and become a better operation social media platform.

Reddit has a total of 430 million active users now and due to this, it has to make sure that the members are discussing appropriate topics. Back when it was not as popular, it was known as the “Darker corner of the web” because it was not inspected as thoroughly. Reddit may lose many advertisers if it does not take any action against the trolls on the application. To avoid losing its advertisers Reddit freshly removed around two thousand controversial subreddits and also updated its policies.

This option may lead to new users and businesses joining Reddit as well. It is a possibility that some old users may not be happy by the sudden increase of members and users, it would certainly help the platform become more feasible especially for businesses.

New G Suite Update Makes Multiple Available Through Single Platform

$

Things are getting quite cutthroat in the world of tech, and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that a lot of tech companies out there are making changes to how they provide services and other tech companies are trying to catch up. Microsoft has been branching out quite a bit and has started providing a number of different services to their Office 365 users, and this multi service platform has proven to be quite popular.

Google also has a similar suite which it refers to as G Suite but up until this point in time it didn’t have quite the same impact. With all of that having been said and out of the way, it is important to note that a new update is rolling out that would allow G Suite users to access multiple other services such as Chat and Meet from a single location. This is going to really streamline the user experience and possibly even entice users to try out this suite allowing Google to get a lot more new users than might have been the case otherwise.

This also indicates that tech in general is going to become a lot more streamlined on the services side. Instead of having disparate services that are all offered from different sites and apps, big companies like Google and Microsoft are going to be trying to make it easier for people to use a lot of different services from a single platform. Facebook might also follow suit in order to remain competitive, and other tech companies are also going to be taking note of this development since it would have a pretty serious impact on the kind of services they are going to be able to provide in the future as well as how users would be expecting to be able to use these services.

8 Emerging Threats in 2021 and How Your Organization Should Prepare Now

$
0
0
The first year of the 2020s is barely halfway over, and it has already been one wild ride. If you’ve had more than a passing moment to catch your breath over the past six months, consider yourself fortunate.

Unfortunately, the world doesn’t stop for the weary. As we look with trepidation and perhaps a glimmer of hope at what the second half of the year could bring, we need to turn our gaze a bit higher on the horizon. That’s right: it’s time to begin thinking ahead to 2021.

The question on every CISO’s mind these days, of course, is whether the current cyber security toolkit is robust enough to deal with the emerging threat landscape — a landscape that grows darker and more complex by the month.

Many corporate leaders understand the multitude of threats that the coming year will bring. And that surely includes some at your peer and competitor organizations — organizations yours risks falling behind without proper preparation. Fortune favors the prepared, and if you don’t count yourself among them, your 2021 could make 2020 look like a walk in the park.

As you look ahead to January, it goes without saying that your organization needs to invest in a comprehensive cyber protection solution that keeps you one step ahead of those who’d do you harm. This cyber protection solution should have five key pillars:
  • Safety: Your solution must ensure that reliable copies of all mission-critical data, systems, and applications are available to your team at all times.
  • Accessibility: Your entire technological footprint must be accessible from anywhere, at any time, with no tolerance for interruptions or corruption.
  • Privacy: You must have complete and total control over who has access to your digital access and visibility into the same, with no compromises allowed.
  • Authenticity: You must be able to create and demand verifiable and undeniable proof that a copy is a precise, faithful replica of the original.
  • Security: You must be able to protect your entire technological apparatus against the fast-moving, ever-changing threat landscape that’s coming in 2021 and beyond.
With your cyber protection solution in place, your organization will be infinitely better prepared to tackle the threats that the future is sure to bring. Even more so with a clear sense of how those threats will appear to your team and where you can expect them to show up within your technological ecosystem.

Knowledge is power, as the saying goes. Let’s take an unsparing look at eight emerging threats your company could well contend with in 2021 and beyond, and the solutions you can begin preparing to implement today to lessen their impact on your operations.

1. AI Poisoning Attacks

The threat: It sounds like a concept ripped from a pulp science fiction book, but don’t roll your eyes: AI poisoning holds devastating potential for organizations that depend on machine learning programs.

The “poison,” injected by attackers at a key point in the learning process, feeds bad data to the program and throws its evolution into a cocked hat. The program learns the wrong lesson, literally, from the data set, with wildly unpredictable (and possibly dangerous) results.

The solution:Nextgov has a detailed overview of efforts to combat AI poisoning attacks. Because the science of AI poisoning (and, honestly, AI itself) remains in its infancy, there’s much we don’t know. But it’s in your interest to learn everything you can about what very well could be a major cyber threat in 2021 and beyond.

2. Increasingly Sophisticated Ransomware

The threat: Ransomware is a big business for cybercriminals large and small. It’s only getting bigger, despite growing awareness of the threat and ever more sophisticated and aggressive means to combat it.

Aided by AI, the next generation of ransomware effortlessly evades malware detection programs and spreads within networks. Fortunately, while difficult to prevent, ransomware attacks are easy to mitigate.

The solution: Relentlessly back up your organization’s mission-critical data, systems, and applications so that you can walk away from an infected machine without paying the ransom. Your cyber protection solution can help.

3. Deepfake Audio and Video

The threat: In the past year or two, you’ve probably seen a video that makes you stop and think, “Wow — that can’t possibly be real.”

Chances are, you’re correct: it’s not real. It’s a deepfake created by sophisticated algorithms that seamlessly splice audio and video to create new realities.

The implications are obvious and terrifying; your organization’s reputation can’t sustain a direct (if dishonest) assault on its leader’s integrity.

The solution: The bad news is that there’s no good defense against deepfakes — the best strategy is rapid response. The good news, for now, is that most deepfakes occupy the “uncanny valley” between obvious falsehood and indistinguishable reality. Get a response ready quickly — with true, verifiable audio and video to prove it, if possible — and your audience will most likely accept it.

4. Spoof Accounts and Social Media Disinformation

The threat: This is another emergent “soft” threat that could present an existential threat to your organization. With off-the-shelf technology and a subtle character shift in the handle, creating spoof social media accounts is not difficult. Making said accounts believable for more than a few posts or tweets is another matter, but that’s not really the game — it’s the immediate, visceral hit to your reputation that should keep you up at night.

The solution: Block and report. Block and report. Block and — you get the idea. Never hesitate to report fraudsters to social media platforms’ fraud departments; it’s their job to investigate and deactivate fraudulent accounts. And always activate two-factor authentication to keep your true accounts safe.

5. Nation State Attacks

The threat: This is by no means a new threat. We saw what a loosely organized nation-state attack did to the 2016 U.S. elections. That attack, executed on a shoestring budget, quite literally changed the course of history.

Recent history presents many more examples of nation state attacks that resulted in serious economic and reputational harm, like the 2014 Sony Pictures hack for which the North Korean government is widely believed to be responsible.

For organizations like yours, the nation state threat is likely to be both lower-key and more menacing. Small and midsize businesses don’t get much press when they’re compromised unless said compromise is part of a larger attack that sweeps up bigger companies or governments. Protection is paramount.

The solution: Let’s be perfectly clear: If a nation state actor wants to compromise your company’s network, it’ll find a way to do so. But it’s rarely the case that a nation state actor sets out to compromise a random company’s network (unless that network holds unusual value). More often, small and midsize businesses suffer collateral damage in nation state attacks; some of the most destructive global worm attacks were thought to originate with nation state actors. If your cyber protection solution is primed to detect emerging threats, you’ll stand a much better chance of parrying the next nation state attack that could otherwise lay you low.

6. Zero Day Exploits

The threat: Zero day exploits aren’t new either. At least, the concept of the zero day exploit isn’t new or novel. But the specific threats change constantly — that’s what makes them so dangerous.

Zero day exploits basically lurk in the shadows, undetected by the cybersecurity professionals tasked with keeping new hardware and software safe. The suspected existence of any given zero day exploit — which, again, may or may not be real — is the subject of a tense and shadowy battle between “black hat” and “white hat” hackers.

Both share a common objective: to root out zero day exploits. But their motives are very different. The black hats want to find and, well, exploit the zero day exploit, wreaking havoc among the compromised systems’ users. White hats want to find the exploit first and warn the manufacturer, giving it time to deploy a patch that prevents black hats from doing their thing.

The solution: Alway patch your systems. Yes, it feels like a drag on resources, but rest assured it’s one of the least intrusive and most effective measures you can take to shore up your cyber defenses. Even if you lack a dedicated IT team, assign a process owner with the responsibility of monitoring and deploying patches as soon as they become available.

7. Insider Threats

The threat: At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the insider threat is yet another not-new threat for 2021. However, and this is a big however, insider threats are growing more sophisticated and aggressive all the time.

That’s mostly because the information insiders can cull from vulnerable organizations is more valuable with each passing month. A well-respected study (reported here by IT Europa) found that cybercrime’s total economic production would make it the world’s third-largest economy were it a nation-state of its own. (Hey, give it time.) In other words: there are many places your disgruntled employees can offload information pilfered from your servers.

The solution: Vigilance is vital. Unfortunately, insider threats are notoriously difficult to defend against. While a comprehensive cyber protection solution can certainly prove decisive in dodgy situations, it’s not foolproof against a determined insider who knows precisely how your systems work and has the credentials needed to access the entire kingdom.

What can you do to protect against determined insiders? The best defense is to control permissions as tightly as possible. No matter how much you trust any given member of your team, you can’t give them an inch more than they need to do their job effectively.

8. DDoS Attacks

The threat: To use an outdated metaphor, a DDoS attack (full name: dedicated denial of service attack) is designed to overload your organization’s circuits. While the actual execution is complicated, the basic concept is easy enough to understand: DDoS attackers route more traffic through your servers than they can handle, causing the whole system to crash offline temporarily.

Massive DDoS attacks can take major organizations offline and affect countless users. The GitHub attack of 2018 remains the biggest to date. Although GitHub survived, it was unusually well prepared to do so, and there’s no guarantee that your organization will find itself so lucky.

The solution: By the time you realize your organization is under attack, it may be too late. Monitor incoming traffic closely to ferret out evidence of low-volume “probing” attacks that discover your weaknesses and set the stage for more devastating violations. And coordinate closely with your cyber protection vendor to mitigate the fallout from a potential attack. It’s never too early to discuss mitigation, after all.

Are You Ready for the Next Generation of Threats?

You’ve heard plenty about the generational changing of the guard on our hands. No need to go into the details, but suffice to say that Gen Z is fast overtaking Gen Y— the millennials — as the tastemaking generation everyone loves to hate.

Laugh now. Ten years from now, half your team (or more) will be Gen Z.

Generations come and go, of course, and we shouldn’t get too worked up over what the kids are up to these days. The human comedy finds a way to keep on.

Unfortunately, the same rules don’t apply to the cyber threat landscape. We’re seeing the same generational shift in the world of digital security without the familiar human component that makes such change (mostly) bearable.

No — for organizations and individuals alike, the new crop of cyber threats represents nothing less than an existential peril. Those unwilling or unable to take measures to stay one step ahead of malicious actors and their increasingly autonomous malware could well find themselves pushed to the brink of extinction in the years to come.

That’s why it’s absolutely vital that you listen to the experts and add a comprehensive cyber protection solution to your security posture. It’s essential that you add knowledgeable cybersecurity experts to your team (or retain external cybersecurity professionals if you can’t afford to hire them directly). And it’s critical that you run a range of compromise scenarios, (including worst-case situations that make you queasy just to think about) to prepare for what could be on the horizon.

You’ve worked too hard to build what’s yours. Don’t let a preventable digital threat take it from you.

Twitter’s Recent Bitcoin Scam Breach Might Be Indicative of a Recurring Issue

$
0
0
A couple of days ago, Twitter ended up seeing a pretty serious security breach. The accounts of some pretty highly visible people from Apple Inc. all the way to Bill Gates ended up being compromised and they were used to try and spread a bitcoin scam. This was a pretty big deal due to the reason that accounts that are this famous and that have a visible verification tick on them are often widely trusted by the public, so even if people see something that seems a little bit suspicious from these accounts they might be willing to suspend their disbelief to a certain extent and make it so that they trust whatever the owner of this account appears to be saying.

This is dangerous due to the reason that people can end up falling for serious scams, and this is why Twitter limited the features that were available to verified accounts when this hack occurred. However, while Twitter can be commended for taking fast action in this regard, it’s fair to say that this is not a new occurrence for the social media platform. Cryptocurrency scams happen quite often on Twitter, and while this might be the most visible hack in recent times, these hacks have still been quite a common problem.

Back in 2018, a lot of verified accounts were hacked in a similar scam that was trying to trick people into giving up their cryptocurrency. This included the account of a Channel 4 journalist, and those scams usually used Elon Musk’s name in order to give themselves some legitimacy. The latest scam that happened on Wednesday used several big names including Barack Obama and Jeff Bezos, in order to get themselves some legitimacy making this sort of thing another common trend.

A lot of people have criticized Twitter’s approach to dealing with this issue as being reactionary. Some such as the Vitalik Beurin, the founder of cryptocurrency Ethereum, have called for Twitter to change its system so that such scams can no longer end up being as common as they currently are. Until and unless Twitter makes some changes or takes some major steps in order to decrease the prevalence with which such things would end up becoming as common as they are right now, most users would be wary while using the platform which is the sort of thing that would probably cause problems for the platform down the line.

WSJ Report Reveals Google Prioritizes YouTube Search Results Over Competitors

Google has been criticized repeatedly for what a lot of people refer to as unfair business practices. A big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that there have been a lot of antitrust suits filed against the company, and Sundar Pichai is going to have to testify before congress quite soon in a case that has generated a lot of buzz. One thing that a lot of people have theorized about but have not been able to fully prove is that Google tries to push its own agenda and its own properties over others especially those of its competitors in the search results that it ends up showing to people.

The Wall Street Journal recently conducted a few tests to see whether or not the search results that they got were truly egalitarian in every single way, shape or form. The fact of the matter is that when they searched for certain things, YouTube videos seemed to be given a higher priority over those that were linked to YouTube’s competitors such as Facebook Watch and Twitch.

If this is true then it means that Google is trying to use its own platform to drive more traffic to one of its own properties. Google is supposed to be an equal place where the most relevant links are what you are shown when you enter a search query, but the fact of the matter is that Google might just be trying to push its own agenda here. A lot of people keep commenting on the fact that Google is becoming a little too big and it is trying to create a monopoly, and if it engages in anti-competitive practices then there would be a lot of problems that this would cause all of which would contribute to the internet becoming a much less friendly place.

Facebook Set to Launch TikTok Competitor as The Short Video Recording App Faces Scrutiny

The rise of TikTok is something that a lot of big tech companies have been fairly worried about and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that TikTok is a China based company and it has managed to secure markets that western companies have not been able to crack. From markets like South Asia all the way to the South Pacific, these are markets that are very valuable indeed and TikTok has managed to become quite prevalent in them in spite of the fact that American social media platforms have seen a slow adoption rate there.

Facebook has been particularly proactive in dealing with this situation by working on an answer to TikTok in the form of Instagram Reels. This is a feature that would similarly allow you to create up to fifteen second videos and draw from a catalogue of music that you can then end up lip syncing to. Part of TikTok’s appeal is how easy it is for users to end up going viral, and Instagram Reels is going to have a similarly structured “Featured Videos” section that would make it easier for the average user to end up getting some kind of a viral video.

After a year of working on this platform, it seems that Facebook is set to launch it globally quite soon. This comes as TikTok is facing scrutiny in Washington, and as a trade war between the US and China is starting to become ever more heated. Some are criticizing the US for trying to stifle capitalism by refusing to allow a Chinese social media platform to succeed on their soil thereby creating artificial conditions in which their own companies can succeed. Regardless, Instagram Reels is going to be launched in over 50 countries, and it will interesting to see whether or not it is able to topple TikTok’s current hegemony.

Facebook’s Own Report Shows Underwhelming Diversity Numbers

Facebook has often been criticized for its data collection policies as well as its strange defense of certain kinds of freedoms and civil liberties whilst it brazenly sacrifices other areas in which things like this matter quite a bit if not just as much. Facebook has come under criticism again, and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that it has failed to try and diversify its workforce. Most of Facebook’s top management is white, and black representation here is far lower than that of any other minority all of whom are being underrepresented in some way, shape or form.

Facebook recently released a diversity report, and this report shows some pretty underwhelming numbers. Last year’s diversity report showed that only 3.8% of its employees were black, and while Facebook made a lot of grand gestures and pledged to change this in the coming year, it turns out that they were all talk and no action due to the reason that this year’s diversity report shows that the number has only just barely increased to 3.9%. This is hardly an increase at all, being so insignificant as to be a rounding error.

The fact of the matter is that there are plenty of qualified black people out there, so the fact that Facebook has so few black employees indicates a serious bias in its hiring processes. The thing is that this hiring bias seems to disproportionately affect black people, and at the end of the day this is not going to be something that people are OK with. There is a lot of furor in the US about racial inequality, so Facebook is only digging its own grave deeper by not changing its hiring practices. At one point or another, either Facebook will start having to hire more of the qualified black people in the job market or people might want to move on to a less racially biased platform.

Instagram Shop is Getting a Revamp

Facebook has been quite serious about moving into the world of eCommerce and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that the social media platform has so many users that it already serves as a middle man for between them and online shopping platforms that it just makes a lot more sense that they cut out the middle man and try to provide the requisite eCommerce services by themselves. The social media giant has been using its subsidiary Instagram in order to fulfill this end, but for the most part their efforts have been more or less lackluster. The current shop tab is pretty drab and dry, but with all of that having been said it is important to note that there is an update that is now being rolled out that is going to revamp the shop tab entirely.

Instead of just being a tab that is relegated to a corner where no one is really going to end up paying all that much attention to it, the shop tab is going have a carousel of products as well as selections of products that are going to be recommended to each individual user based on their prior buying history. This is most likely going to help out with a lot of things including making Instagram Shop the sort of thing that a lot more people might just end up being a little bit interested in using to a certain extent.

A shortcut to this section is also being added to the navigation bar, something that would definitely indicate that Facebook is very serious indeed about pushing Instagram Shop and making it so that as many people end up using it as possible at the end of the day.
"For purchases you make with checkout, we’re rolling out Facebook Pay in the coming weeks in the US. Announced last year, Facebook Pay will provide a seamless, secure way to shop and make donations to causes you care about across our apps.", posted Instagram team in a blog post. Adding further, "It features an extra layer of security with the ability to add a unique PIN or device biometrics, such as Touch or Face ID. We also provide Purchase Protection on eligible products that you buy using checkout."
We will have to wait and see what other steps Facebook takes in order to meet this end.

Twitter to Release Tools to Help Developers Fight Hate Speech and Facilitate Research

Twitter has always been at the forefront of trying to help make the internet a much safer and more egalitarian space for pretty much every single person involved. A big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that this social media platform wants to set itself apart from the pack and attempt to give its users an experience that would not have them exposed to any kind of discrimination with prevention of hate speech particularly being the sort of thing that Twitter has been focusing on for quite some time now.

The micro-blogging platform had been planning to release a set of tools and APIs that would allow developers to create products that would facilitate hate speech no longer being as much of an issue but the release was delayed by a few days to a security issue. These APIs were also going to help businesses get more information on consumer habits and facilitate research that would improve products and services thereby making it so that consumers get far products that they can end up enjoying on a regular basis and businesses can improve their profit margins without compromising on the all important user experience.

With all of that having been said and out of the way, it is important to note that in spite of the fact that the release of this API was delayed due to the recent hacks on high profile accounts in a bitcoin scam, the release is still going to go through in a few days time. This means that developers would be able to take advantage of these tools which is something that the vast majority of them are most likely going to end up being highly appreciative of all in all.

Snapchat Is Beta Testing Brand Profiles with 30 Advertisers, Plans To Expand the Feature to All Brands by the End of This Year

For the first time, Snapchat will allow brands to have their own profiles on the platform. The company has announced a beta test and states that the brand profiles will be permanent homes for companies on Snapchat that pools their assets like e-commerce stores and Lenses. On Wednesday, the company has launched brand profiles as a closed beta for thirty marketers.

Although the new feature is being introduced as a beta start for select brands, the company has confirmed that its aims to allow all businesses to access brand profiles by the end of this year.

These pages function as an extension of the public profiles which were launched in 2019. Public profiles have enabled United States media networks like ESPN and NBC News to build a following on the Snapchat app. Now, it seems that the platform wants marketers to be able to build their ‘real estate’ as the audience tends to be harder to reach on a brands’ own site or application.

Snapchat has made its name a disappearing-message application and is now creating permanent places for the content of brands to live to encourage advertisers to invest more.

Brands can save as well as showcase any branded AR Lenses they have created or commissioned on their Snapchat’s profile. With Highlights, brands can showcase collections of their best public Snaps, photos, Stories, and videos. They will also be able to showcase their own public story, giving viewers another perspective via the Snapchat application. Lastly, brand profiles will also feature an optional Store experience, which will allow users to browse and buy products directly within the application.

L’Oreal Paris, Universal, Target, and Dior are among the thirty brands that are launching their brand profiles today. Snapchat will allow brands to manage their profile and insights in the application as well as on the web via Snapchat’s Business Manager. Business Manager allows brands to view information such as audience demographics and interest for those users who see their Snapchat Stories.

Brand profiles are a significant addition to the platform, which has long promoted itself as the place where you connect with your friends. Although the company has also showcased publisher content via the Discover section, and brand promotions through ads, the addition of particular brand profiles is another huge step towards providing extra ways for brands to showcase how they are utilizing various tools of the app. If a user subscribes to a brand, they will be able to find the brand’s Stories and Lenses in the subscription section of the Snapchat app.

Facebook Will Now Label All Posts About Voting From Politicians Irrespective Of Whether The Content Contain Misleading Information Or Not

A few weeks ago, Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced that the company will add labels to all posts about voting and direct people to Facebook’s voting hub for authentic information. Now, the social media giant is rolling out labels to all posts that mention voting or ballots and come for federally-elected officials and presidential candidates. All posts about voting will be labeled irrespective of whether the content contains misleading information or not.

The new labels will include a ‘Get Voting Information’ CTA (Call to Action), and when a user will click on the CTA, they will be directed to a page on the USA.gov site. The USA.gov website outlines various questions and answers related to the voting process. The new update is a significant policy shift from the company as Facebook has been heavily criticized after the company refused to add warning messages or labels to posts made by political candidates or submit such posts to fact-checks, despite various other social media platforms moving to take more action against such posts.

Back in May of this year, Twitter sparked a new battle with Donald Trump, United States President, after Twitter added a warning label to his tweets. According to Twitter, Donald Trump’s tweet on mail-in voting did not violate the platform’s policies, as such, however, the company added a warning label, given that those tweets could mislead users as to how the mail-in process functions, and eventually lower voter participation.

The following day, Zuckerberg criticized the approach of Twitter. He said that social media platforms should not be the ‘arbiters of truth.’ Since then, the social media giant, Facebook has been criticized for the company’s hands-off approach in this respect. This also resulted in the Facebook ads boycott campaign which is likely to cost Facebook billions of dollars.

The new initiative is a positive sign as it indicates that Facebook, and particularly Mark Zuckerberg, is listening, it is hearing what the community is saying. It seems that the company is slowly evolving to meet those expectations of people. However, the company is still standing firm on its decision not to fact-check political ads. However, it seems that the social media giant is looking to change its broader approach in this respect.

Last month, Mark Zuckerberg, announced via Facebook Live that Facebook will look to add new labels to posts from politicians. The new labels being rolled out today should help to ensure that people using Facebook are given the opportunity to learn more about voting claims. With its Voting Information Center, the company also aims to encourage more Americans to participate in the November poll.

The Apple News app which ships preinstalled on Apple devices is getting significant updates. The company is adding new audio features including audio stories, and a daily audio briefing known as Apple News Today in the application, alongside expanded local coverage.

The Apple News Today feature is somewhat of a competitor to Alexa’s Flash Briefing. Flash Briefing has become a popular way to catch up on the top headlines, however, in Apple’s case, people host the briefing instead of a virtual assistant. Duarte Geraldino and Shumita Basu, Apple News editors, and co-hosts will guide users through the day’s news headlines. The briefing will run for nearly 7-8 minutes, and all Apple News readers in the United States will be able to access the feature.

Every Monday through Friday, a new briefing will arrive, and users can play them in Apple News in the US, in Apple Podcasts, or users can also launch them using Siri voice commands across Apple devices.

Audio stories will only be made available to Apple News+ subscribers in the US, and starting today, the app will produce nearly twenty new audio stories every week across a range of topics. The stories are narrated by voice actors, and will not be original content. These stories will be professionally narrated version of feature reporting as well as other long-form pieces of news published by NY Magazine, TIME, Vogue, Wired, Esquire, Essence, and other, and newspapers such as the LA Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

Four years ago, Apple partnered with SpokenLayer to bring audio narration to Apple News, however, that was focused to enhance the Apple Podcasts experience. Apple has not partnered with SpokenLayer to bring the new audio features. The company stated that it is working with voice talent itself and recording audio stories in the company’s studios. The company did not reveal the number of workers hired to work on audio programming, however, confirmed that it expanded headcount particularly for audio.

Apple News navigation experience has also been redesigned to make room for the new audio features, and you will now see a new Audio tab at the bottom of your screen. CarPlay will also support Apple News, and listening progress will sync between devices as users more from iPhone to car.

Apple News is also introducing expanded local coverage. Apple News will feature a curated local news experience in select markets. The news experience will be headed by a local editor, and these sections will include a wide range of stories across various areas. Today, Apple News+ expanded its selection of local as well as regional newspapers. Apple News has now over 125 million monthly active users in the UK, US, Canada, and Australia.

The new features will be released as part of the iOS13.6, macOS 10.15.6, and iPadOS13.6 updates arriving today.

Video calling has become a lot more important during the pandemic than it once used to be, and several tech companies doing extra efforts to make things easier for users. We have seen huge changes in the video calling space, and now Facebook is adding another feature to its messaging app Messenger. Facebook Messenger is now getting the option of screen sharing on iOS as well as Android operating system.

The company has extended the screen sharing feature which was previously only available on the web and desktop Messenger app. On Thursday, Facebook announced that users will be able to share their screen over Messenger video calls. Nora Micheva, Product Manager at Facebook, stated in a blog post that the screen sharing option allows users to instantly share their displays with their friends and family members one-on-one or in a group video conversation with up to 8 participants, and up to 16 participants in Messenger Rooms while using the Messenger app on their iOS and Android smartphones.

The new feature is currently in the process of going live and will soon be rolled out in the Messenger apps for Android as well as iOS device. The development of the new feature was accelerated mainly due to the social isolation that people have been experiencing during the coronavirus pandemic. It is believed that this is the perfect time to roll out this feature.

Micheva wrote in the blog post that screen sharing allows users to share a live view of their display so users can share virtually anything together. With this feature, users can share memories from their camera rolls, shop together online, and more. She stated that the new feature makes it easier for users to stay connected and close with their friends and family members, even when they are physically apart.

Facebook plans to add controls for who can share their display in Messenger Rooms. The company is also planning to expand the number of participants users can share their screen with to fifty. If you are a Room creator, Facebook will soon allow you to limit the ability of screen sharing to only yourself, or make it available to people in a group video conversation.

Facebook is not the only company that is trying to work on developing a better experience for users as several companies in the past have taken steps to promote video calling on a much higher level, and giving it more priority. Nora Micheva also wrote in the blog post that the company hopes that users will find this new feature a fun and engaging way to connect as well as share with their loved ones on video conversations and in Rooms.

Facebook Rolls Out New Image Presentation Formats

Facebook often changes things up in various ways and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that it is trying to incorporate features from all of its different platforms so that it can continuously improve its user experience by a pretty large margin. One thing that the social media giant started experimenting with last October was a change in the way images ended up being displayed. It was clear that Facebook wanted to start going for a more visually centered approach for their social media, and this meant that changes to the format needed to be made.

These changes are now being rolled out, and most people would agree that the new presentation formats are quite good due to the reason that they have a tendency to vastly improve how much your images pop on the newsfeed. It’s clear that Facebook doesn’t want image centric social media to solely be to purview of Instagram, and the social media platform is trying to transform its flagship service as well so that more people start using it in an increasingly visual manner which could lead to even bigger changes down the line.

It is currently unknown if these image formats will be rolled out to Brand Pages as well, but the fact of the matter is that this is the sort of thing that Facebook tends to want to focus on since businesses would want to use these new formats as well. Once that rollout happens, the way brands are able to advertise on Facebook will change entirely so much so that you might be seeing much more visual ads and posts from these brands.

While this isn’t an enormous change, it does give people an idea of the direction that Facebook seems to be headed in.

Twitter's Executive Bemoans Current Machine Learning Limitations

It’s fair to say that Twitter has in many ways ended up becoming the hub in which people have the various conversations that shape opinions on a wide variety of topics at the end of the day. The thing about Twitter is that it has a tendency to be a really toxic place as well, and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that there is a lot of misinformation out there as well as hate speech. Twitter has taken a lot of steps to try and keep itself free of misinformation and hate speech, something that is becoming increasingly important when you take into account the fact that misinformation is at an all time high due to the reason that the current pandemic means that a lot of people don’t really know what is going on and the recent protests and riots in the US have meant that hate speech has become a lot more difficult to manage at the end of the day.

Twitter is trying to use machine learning in order to protect users from these kinds of threats, but CTO Parag Agarwal has discussed the issues that are being faced with this sort of thing. In spite of the fact that Twitter is using machine learning, a lot of misinformation as well as hate speech ends up slipping through the cracks. The reason behind this is that there are still problems that need to be ironed out when it comes to hate speech, and there are four particular problems that Twitter seems to be facing in this regard.

Machine power bots that are trying to manipulate the algorithm are a real source of annoyance and they are one of the problems that are being faced. Sometimes these bots are being used strategically by humans instead of being allowed to run amok. In a lot of situations there are human manipulators who make accounts on the platform in an attempt to subvert the conversation. There are also a number of real accounts out there that end up getting compromised in some way, shape or form.
