TikTok Collaborates With Top Creators to Combat Misinformation

$

Pretty much every single social media platform that is out there has been beset by misinformation regarding the pandemic that we are going through at this current point in time, and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that social media platforms are essentially open forums where anyone can end up saying pretty much whatever they want to a certain extent. These are places where people share their opinions, and if their opinions involve misinformation surrounding the novel coronavirus, this means that they would be more than willing to share them on whatever social media platform that they deem to be worthy of this supposed information.

TikTok is no different in that it has a serious misinformation problem much like Facebook, Twitter and the like. However, unlike Facebook which has really not take a very proactive approach when it comes to the various problems that are associated with misinformation and the like, TikTok is trying to remedy this situation by collaborating with some of its top creators. This project is essentially a series of videos that is called “Be Informed”.

This is an awareness campaign that is essentially meant to help users figure out what the signs of misinformation actually are. By looking into the various ways in which misinformation ends up being spread, TikTok can help prevent the spread from being far worse than might have been the case otherwise because of the fact that a lot of users would know misinformation when they see it. Many users are posting videos that have anti-vaccination messages as well as false information about how the developing 5G network is what is responsible for the spread of this virus. If other users are able to fact check the content they watch then they would find it easier to avoid spreading it further themselves.

Apple Starts Moving Towards Racially Neutral Coding Terms

While it’s fair to say that we live in a society that is far more equal than it used to be, there are still a few things about it that hearken back to a far less equal time and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that our language often incorporates elements of a racist past. This is something that a lot of people don’t even realize, but in the programming and coding community there has been a growing movement that is discussing the importance of changing terms that stem from racial biases and racist histories.

Terms such as blacklist and whitelist are included in this category, and while some might argue that this is not that big of a deal even though it clearly is since black being bad and white being good definitely comes from a racist set of principles, there is other terminology such as Master/Slave that is definitely racist since it refers to the long and sordid history of black enslavement in the west and particularly the US. Master/Slave is used to refer to one program or software that controls another, and programmers and developers are increasingly calling for this language to be changed.

Apple is one of the first major companies to take something like this seriously, and the tech giant recently announced that it would be moving away from the use of this terminology towards more neutral terms such as deny list and allow list instead of blacklist and whitelist as well as primary and secondary instead of master and slave. It is phasing the older language out of Xcode as well as various other aspects of its developer ecosystem, and while a small but vocal minority might criticize this as unnecessary and just another example of PC culture, others would most definitely commend this as being a step in the right direction.

Researchers Discovered a New Android Malware That Steals Credentials from Banking Apps As Well As Shopping, Communication And Business Category Apps

$

On Thursday, cybersecurity experts uncovered a new strain of banking malware that steals data and passwords from not only banking apps but also from 337 non-banking Android apps such as social networking, cryptocurrency, and dating apps. In May of this year, ThreatFabric analysts discovered this malware dubbed BlackRock. After investigation, it was found that its source code is derived from the Xerxes banking malware, which is a strain of the LokiBot Android banking Trojan, first observed between 2016 and 2017.

The source code of the Xerxes malware was leaked by its author back in May of the year 2019, which indicates that any threat actor can now access the source code of this malware. It is pretty common to see a threat landscape being supplemented with new variants after the source code of malware becomes publicly accessible. However, no new malware based on Xerxes’ source code was observed, and it seems that BlackRock is the only Trojan based on this source code.

ThreatFabric in a blog post stated that the BlackRock Trojan undergo changes in its code and it also comes with an increased target list. It collects data by abusing the Accessibility Service privileges of Android. It seeks the permissions of users under the guise of fake Google updates when the victim first launches in on their device.

Eventually, BlackRock Trojan goes on to grant itself extra permissions, and then it establishes a connection with a remote C2 (command-and-control) server to execute its malicious activities. It injects overlays atop the sign in and payment screens of the targeted applications. These password-stealing overlays have been discovered on financial applications operating in the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia, and shopping, business, and communication applications.

The cybersecurity experts at ThreatFabric explained that the target list on non-banking applications includes popular apps such as but not limited to Uber, Grinder, Twitter, Snapchat, Skype, Tumblr, Reddit, Amazon, and more.

This is not the first time the accessibility features of Android have been abused by smartphone malware. Researchers at IBM X-Force detailed a new TrickBot campaign earlier this year. The campaign is called TrickMo which was exclusively targeting German users with malware that abused Android’s accessibility features to intercept OTP, pushTan, and mTAN authentication codes.

Then in April of this year, Cybereason discovered a distinct class of banking malware called EvenBot. It also abused the same feature to exfiltrate sensitive information from banking apps, read messages of users, and hijack SMS-based 2FA codes. However, the sheer breadth of targeted apps makes the BlackRock campaign different from others. The list of targeted apps goes beyond smartphone banking applications. The cybersecurity researchers at ThreatFabric concluded that it is expected that financially motivated threat actors will now create new banking Trojans and they will continue to improve the existing Trojans such as Alien, BlackRock, and Eventbot.

Google taps in the Shopping brigade

Google has a new project in his hands – to make your shopping experience better. Currently, the search giant is experimenting with a video shopping platform that will show new products to the customers in less than 90 seconds.

The project is titled ‘Shoploop’ and is part of Google’s internal R&D division that is responsible for testing out new ideas.

According to Shoploop’s founder, the idea of the shopping platform was conjured after seeing the common behavior of consumer’s when making an online purchase. For example, potential consumers often go back and forth between social media networks such as YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook for reviews – before actually making the final purchase.

With Shoploop, the customers will get an interactive platform where they will be able to watch videos of creators showing off various products. Initially, Shoploop will launch products related to the beauty industry and expand according to the audience’s demand.

Of course, integrating videos with eCommerce is not a novel idea. Others have done it in the past and Shoploop will be joining the bandwagon.

For example, Amazon has a live streaming platform called the Amazon Live. YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram also launched their own version of video-shopping with links to product pages.

There are also many mobile shopping startups that have embraced video. This includes Dote that was able to raise $12 million last year and Popshop Live that raised $3 million in January. Other shopping platforms that integrate videos along with photos include NTWRK, Yeay, Spin, Bambuser, MikMak, and Buywith – to name a few.

If successful, Shoploop can prove to be an important asset for Google. With Amazon’s ad business on the rise, Google has been working on ways to enhance its Shopping vertical – and the adoption of Shoploop is a good start.

Shoploop is available on mobile at https://shoploop.app. A desktop version for the same is under production.

Pinterest Donates $300,000 to Struggling Hospitality Workers

The pandemic that the world is currently going through seems to have affected every single industry, and the hospitality sector might the hardest hit. A big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that people can’t really go out anymore which means that restaurants and especially hotels are failing to get the kind of success that they require in order to sustain their businesses in a way that would be long term or even short term since we are talking about pure survival now.

The tech industry has actually been doing really well during this pandemic due to the reason that people are stuck at home and can’t do much else apart from stream TV shows and movies and scroll through social media. Hence, in order to offset this to a certain extent, Pinterest is launching a new initiative that it is referring to as “Chefs at Home”, and this will feature a lot of content from chefs such as recipes as well as kitchen practices. This makes sense since people are cooking at home a lot more now and this means that this type of content will help sustain a lot of chefs that might be out of work as well as give people another distraction from the terrible situation that we all are currently in.

Pinterest is also donating a total of $300,000 to a variety of hospitality based organizations as well as to raise awareness for the situation. People are out of work and many don’t know when they would be able to get jobs again if they ever manage to get jobs at all, and this is something that can really improve things for them since it would give them some much needed cash which they can potentially end up doing in order to at the very least temporarily manage all of their finances.

Microsoft's Skype Rolls Out A Much Needed Group Calling Feature To Catch Up With Zoom

When the coronavirus pandemic started becoming a really serious issue that was impacting pretty much every single walk of life, one company started suddenly rising to the top and getting a lot more traction and usage than anyone would have thought possible. This company was Zoom and it provides group calling services with video and since so many people were stuck at home Zoom became the go to both for work meetings as well as personal calls in which friends would just catch up with each other and hang out with one another all in all.

The rise of Zoom was quite surprising and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that there were so many group video calling applications and services that were already out there such as Google Meet, WhatsApp and of course Skype, yet people chose Zoom because of the fact that it provided a lot of features that some of the better established apps and services might not have. Hence, a lot of really big tech companies such as Facebook, Google and Microsoft who own these well known apps have been playing catch up with Zoom to try and break the monopoly that is slowly starting to create but probably won’t be able to hold onto once all has been said and is now out of the way.

Microsoft has been making this move recently with Skype. Skype is now rolling out standardized backgrounds that you can use, as well as support for group video calls that can allow up to a 12 person split screen. Figuring out how this works must not have been hard for Skype which shows how competition helps companies innovate rather than rest on their laurels. It remains to be seen if Skype can catch up to Zoom since it is very much the underdog when you bring WhatsApp, Messenger and Google Meet into the equation.

New Leak Reveals Facebook’s Goal of a Singular Messaging App

$

Facebook really started to take off when it acquired big platforms such as Instagram as well as WhatsApp which might have been its single biggest buy but with all of that having been said and out of the way it is important to note that after it made all of these acquisitions it slowly and methodically began to work towards the goal of taking away the things that made these platforms unique and making it so that it can unify as many of its services as possible into a single service or possibly even a single app.

One thing that it might have too many of is messaging services. People can send each other messages through Facebook Messenger, Instagram’s DM feature as well as WhatsApp. It was made pretty clear early on that one thing that Facebook would want to try and integrate were these messaging apps and features, and while WhatsApp has more or less become a pretty separate entity with Facebook holding back on the branding apart from a simple declaration that it is Facebook property, the integration of Messenger and Instagram’s services was something that was thought to be more or less inevitable.

It turns out that a recent leak that was brought about by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, and he basically discovered privacy policies that reflect that this integration has already started happening. You might soon be able to message people on Instagram from Messenger and vice versa, and you have a few options about where you want to receive messages that you get that aren’t directly from the app that you might currently be using. While it is currently unknown whether or not Facebook would want to integrate both of these services into a single app since doing so would be tricky since their users often don’t want the same things, it is quite likely that this would be the way the social media giant ends up going about things.

Experts Warn That Twitter Attack Could Be a Part of Something Much Larger, Here Are Some Suggestions from a Professional Hacker for Other Tech Companies to Avoid Such Attacks

$

Recently, Twitter experienced a terrified cyber attack in which a lot of high-profile accounts were hijacked. The targeted accounts included those of Elon Musk, Barack Obama, and Bill Gates. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is also now looking into this attack. Several details are still unknown to us, however, the social media platform has confirmed that the attackers gained access to Twitter’s internal systems by coordinating a social engineering attack on one of the company’s employee.

Reports from TechCrunch and Motherboard suggest that the hackers were able to access an internal dashboard that allowed them to reset the login credentials on select accounts and take control of those accounts. Early into this attack, some individuals started to theorize that this was exactly what was happening during the attack. SocialProof Security’s CEO, Rachel Tobac is a professional hacker hired by several companies to break into their security systems to expose vulnerabilities.

Rachel Tobac tweeted that the hackers had likely accessed Twitter’s employee admin panel as the attack was starting to unfold. Tobac stated that the admin privileges accessed by the attackers are common among tech companies. Several companies have a lot of admin access and it is unchecked, added Tobac. She said that it is pretty rare that she gets stopped while executing an attack and cannot get admin access. Oftentimes, she gets admin access within only five minutes.

Tobac’s company has worked with several major companies including Uber, PayPal, and Facebook. She suggested a few things for tech companies with these types of admin systems. Tech companies should require multiple employees to log off on some specific decisions.

She said that companies should have at least 2 sets of eyes when they have to make a really big decision such as changing email of big influencers such as Barak Obama, Apple and Uber. Tobac suggests multi-factor authorization for even signing in with those login credentials at work. She added that tech companies can also have threat detection. If companies have an insider threat, and they mark some high-value behaviors as possible threat actions, it will alert them if they see them going off multiple times in one hour.

Employees should be trained and technical tools should also be made available to them, recommends Tobac. Experts have already warned that the Twitter attack might be part of something larger than only bitcoin scams. Some cybersecurity experts believe that the bitcoin scam might have been a way for attackers to show off. Twitter is under fire to explain to lawmakers how such an attack could happen. Tobac thinks that this is an issue that several firms do not take seriously. Experts believe that this is a big wake-up call for companies across the globe to limit their admin access or have improved security checks.

Google Chrome for Android Is Beta Testing a New Feature to Make Sign-in Process More Convenient

Google Chrome is one of the most popular browsers across the world, and like most other browsers, it already goes a long way toward making browsing easier for users as well as secure by saving the login credentials, and periodically checking if any of those login credentials have been compromised. Google regularly adds new features and tools to its Chrome browser to improve the user experience.

Now, the company is apparently bringing yet another feature to the Chrome browser. Google committed to enabling the ‘Touch to Fill’ feature by default in version 84 of the Chrome browser for Android. And the company recently rolled out Chrome 84 for Android. It seems that the Chrome browser will soon autofill the login credentials when a user touches the username field.

The Touch to Fill UI (User Interface) for login credentials has been behind the flag for some, however, today, the Chromium team has enabled this feature by default. The browser is streamlining the process of signing into sites using saved login credentials with the new ‘Touch to Fill’ experience.

The Chrome browser for Android began to revamp its autofill system last month for things such as addresses and payment methods with a new autofill bar. The new bar UI for autofill for addresses, billing info, and passwords, also enables users to individually tap to fill portions of their saved addresses. Now, it appears that the Chrome browser is also working to upgrade its password autofill experience.

Techdows spotted the new feature called ‘Touch to Fill’ which the company has begun rolling out to users on Chrome Beta for Android. If you not on the Beta version of the Chrome browser, or if you don’t want to wait for the feature to appear naturally, you can also enable the Touch to Fill feature with a flag in chrome: //flags.

Go to chrome://flags page and enable the ‘Touch to fill UI for Passwords’ to start using the new feature. After you have enabled the feature, the next time you sign into a site that you have saved a password for e.g. Amazon or Facebook, the browser will offer the Touch to Fill prompt when you will tap on the box to enter your username or email used for signing into the website. Now, a sheet will pop up instead of the keyboard, and you will see your saved login credentials on this sheet. Swipe up to expand this sheet, and you will see a shortcut for managing your saved credentials.

This new experience is already appearing with Chrome Beta for Android for some users, however, you can use it via a flag on the Stable version of the browser, we expect that the new UI will begin to roll out widely any time soon.

Starting August 18, Google Will Prohibit Publishers from Running Ads on Content Promoting COVID-19 Conspiracy Theories

Last week, CNBC reported that Alphabet’s Google announced that the company will block ads that promote conspiracy theories about the coronavirus, remove ads from webpages that promote misinformed theories, and even demonetize entire websites that frequently violate Google’s new policy. CNBC notes that Google will implement this policy starting on August 18 of this year, and the new policy supplements an existing ban on monetizing harmful medical misleading information.

The company already prohibits ads on content that promotes harmful claims related to unproven health cures or disease prevention. A company’s spokesman confirmed the news and stated that the new policy will cover webpages that contradict an ‘authentic scientific consensus’ on the COVID-19 pandemic. While the tech giant already demonetizes false health claims, Google will soon demonetize false claims about the origin of the coronavirus pandemic, for instance.

However, the company will not apply the new policy on webpages (including Fact-Checking networks) that debunk or report on the existence of these conspiracy theories about the coronavirus pandemic. Moreover, it also does not apply to non-COVID-19-related conspiracy theories. Google’s spokesman told media outlets that the company is putting extra safeguards in place by expanding its harmful health claims policies for publishers as well as advertisers to include dangerous content related to a health crisis contradicting scientific consensus.

Google along with various other major web platforms have struggled with a constantly shifting misleading information landscape around the coronavirus pandemic. Back in March, Google briefly banned all non-governmental COVID-19-related, however, the ban was lifted after complaints from Democratic campaign organizations.

Moreover, Google has also demonetized YouTube videos that mention the pandemic, a strategy the tech giant has adopted around several sensitive topics. And during the product shortages early in the coronavirus pandemic, the company temporarily banned ads for the sale of face masks. This policy was also adopted by the social media giant, Facebook.

It is yet not clear how much content currently violates the new policy of Google, and whether particular websites will be demonetized under the new rules. In the past, high-profile ad removals have resulted in controversy including a temporary demonetization of Zero Hedge which is a conservative website. Google demonized this website due to pervasive racism in the site’s comment section.

Last week, the company confirmed that Google had reinstated Zero Hedge’s advertising after the site implemented moderation on the comments section and removed derogatory comments. After Google implements the new policy, only certain companies or government agencies will be allowed to run ads about the virus, including health providers and government organizations.

Google Will Soon Add a New Emoji Shortcut Bar to the Gboard Android App

$
0
0
Emoji helps users to better express themselves during mobile communication. July 17 is considered as the World Emoji Day, and Google shared some of its Emoji plans for the Gboard Android app. Gboard beta testers will soon get a new quick-access emoji bar. This new feature is currently being tested in beta, and the company plans to roll out this feature to all Android users soon.

The Gboard app is one of the finest keyboard applications for smartphones. Users can download this app on their Android as well as iOS devices. The tech giant keeps on upgrading its products and services and now, it seems that the Gboard app will soon get a brand new emoji bar at the top of the keyboard. You will see the most used emojis in this bar, and as conversations are incomplete without emojis these days, the new feature will be very useful for users.

Usually, users need to tap on the emoji icon if they want to enter any emoji on Google’s Gboard app, and then they choose the emoji they want to use. However, the new feature will make it convenient for users to insert an emoji with only one tap.

The new change may sound minor, however, considering how reliant we have become on emojis, any shortcut is a massive help. To use this new feature, you need to register as a beta user.

In addition to the quick-access emoji bar being tested out in beta, the company is also adding 117 new emojis to Android version 11 this fall. Some new emojis are efforts to improve the inclusiveness of your emoji options such as man in veil, a person feeding a baby with a bottle, and a woman in a tuxedo. Earlier this year, Unicode announced sixty-two new emojis along with gender variants as well as skin tone.

Some are just plain fun such as piñata, anatomically correct heart, and tamales, etc. You may also note that the company has redesigned some emojis to play well with the dark mode theme, such as the skunk. Google also announced that a number of classic emojis are returning to Android this fall. Several older designs are coming back to the animal section of the emoji keyboard. Popular designs including the 2013 Turtle and the 2016 Frog are coming back to the Android 11 emoji keyboard.

Which states are the best places to get a job as a developer?

$
0
0
We all rely so much on the skills and expertise of developers. They’re the people who make so much of modern life run smoothly and the demand for them continues to grow as more and more of our lives exist digitally. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that finding a job is as straightforward as learning the skills and walking straight into a ready-made role, joining the 4 million people in America already working as developers.

For one thing, developer jobs are usually very specific, with the needs of each role dependent on the circumstances and each developer having a certain set of technical skills and experience. This is why it pays - literally - to be where the right jobs are, but are the best opportunities where you might expect? Is Silicon Valley still the place to be for getting a developer job?

According to a new study more than half of America’s developer vacancies can be found in just four states, and it’s no surprise that California comes out on top, with nearly a quarter of all dev jobs in the whole country.

That’s where you can find Silicon Valley, in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, with Palo Alto generally considered its beating heart. The home of so much American entrepreneurial genius, Silicon Valley’s worth can be seen by San Jose (the largest city in the area) having the third largest GDP per capita in the world.

This is where Hewlett and Packard got together to kickstart the area’s tech revolution, and it’s the home of Apple, Google, PayPal, Adobe, Cisco, Intel, Twitter, Netflix and many more, so it stands to reason that if you’re a developer, you’re likely to aspire to work here, with the Googleplex HQ in Mountain View demonstrating exactly why.
The best U.S. cities and states to land a developer job in 2020
The perks there include free meals every day, free cooking classes, free gyms, massages, free transport to and from work and the opportunity to work at one of the coolest-looking office buildings in the world, with Google’s other offices rarely disappointing either. Plus there’s the possibility of working on a new project that can transform the way we all live our lives, which is why so many developers are now growing up dreaming of their chance to work for the likes of Google or Apple in Silicon Valley.

And with over 12,000 dev jobs going in California, it’s certainly the state to look if you’re after a new role. But there is a downside. Everyone wants to work in Silicon Valley, there’s literally TV shows and movies about it, and that means it’s incredibly difficult to actually get a job there, because the competition is so intense. If you’ve watched the sitcom of the same name, you’ll know that Silicon Valley can be a cut-throat place and that you can’t just walk in, work for Google, start up a company and make your fortune.

For one thing, actually getting a job somewhere like Google is a feat in itself because of the notoriously difficult interview process. The acceptance rate there is 0.2%, which means it’s actually easier to get into Harvard. In the past they’ve been famous - along with other tech giants like Microsoft - for their very quirky and baffling brainteaser questions as well as a lengthy process that sometimes saw candidates having to endure up to 25 different interviews before finding out if they got the job.

Today the interview process isn’t quite as exhausting, but you could still expect to be interviewed by four different people and to face some serious interrogations to find out if you are the right fit. Apple is another Silicon Valley company where jobs are at a premium and you have to be at the top of your game as a developer to get in as well as needing to cope with interview questions like this:

"There are three boxes, one contains only apples, one contains only oranges, and one contains both apples and oranges. The boxes have been incorrectly labeled such that no label identifies the actual contents of the box it labels. Opening just one box, and without looking in the box, you take out one piece of fruit. By looking at the fruit, how can you immediately label all of the boxes correctly?"

So, while California does have around a quarter of all developer jobs in America, maybe it’s not the best state to target in your career plan. The next best state for dev roles is Washington, which has over 7,000 jobs, around 14% of the national total and over 5,000 of those are in Seattle, making it the country’s best city for dev job-hunting. Why Seattle? Well, it’s the home of Amazon, for one thing, as well as the base for headquarters for the likes of Nintendo of America, Moz and Expedia. Oh, and the I Can Has Cheezburger blog too.

Those are just the big names, there’s plenty of up and coming tech companies based in Seattle, which is why it’s earned a reputation almost up there with Silicon Valley as a place for developers (devs) to build a career with a hot new start-up and also as a great place to work in general. Of course, the same can certainly be said for the third state on the list, Texas and its own little metropolitan hub of dev jobs - Austin.

Home to the uber-cool SXSW festival, Austin isn’t just where devs come together once a year to share ideas and watch hipster bands play live, there’s also a thriving job market there with more than 1,500 dev roles available, which places it fourth on the list of top cities in America. The likes of Apple, Amazon, eBay, Facebook, Google, HP and many more all have offices in Austin, which is why it's earned the nickname of Silicon Hills.

It’s not just the number of large tech companies with offices there, or even the hip festival, that makes Austin a great place for devs to look for roles, the whole city is renowned for its ‘weirdness’ in a good way and it has usually found itself at the forefront of adoption of new technologies, having in the past been the city with the most bloggers and the most active city on Reddit. It’s also regularly near the top of list of Best Places to Live in the USA.

But one city that does rank higher for dev jobs is another one famous as a place where so many of us want to live and work. And that’s New York City, flying the flag for East Coast dev opportunities with nearly 3,000 roles available in the city and just over that many in the state as a whole, putting it fourth on the list of states. It even has its own Silicon Alley, an area of tech companies centered around the Flatiron district, though since the Dot-com bubble burst, there’s been less of a concentration in this particular area.

There are developer jobs available all over the country in some form or other, but these states and cities are where the biggest concentrations of them are. This comes with the downsides of intense competition, but the upsides of being areas that are set up for the needs and lifestyles associated with developers, whether it’s the incredible perks in Silicon Valley or the quirky cultural opportunities of Austin. In the end, it all comes down to what you can do and where you want to do it.

Developer jobs have the 10th most highly anticipated growth rates in the next five years. And as of today, there are 83,000 full-time developer jobs in the U.S. But where are those jobs? And who's getting hired for them? Here's the data that highlights the best places in America to land a developer job. Seattle is the dev jobs capital, with 5,285 vacancies (nearly double that of New York City). However, NYC is the top virtual destination - with 236 job listings for remote opportunities. Nearly 25% of all vacancies are for companies in California.

How to Stay Focused When Working From Home (infographic)

$
0
0
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many people have found themselves working from home this year, and this great shift in working culture may not be such a temporary change. It’s looking increasingly like working from home will continue to be part of the ‘new normal,’ as people are seeing some advantages to remote work.

For some, it still just feels safer to stay out of shared work spaces, especially if it’s not really necessary to be present in person at work. For others, the appeal of working from home as a more long term option is keeping them indoors. Working from home has the benefit of spending more time close to family, cutting out a time-consuming and costly commute, and having more control over the working day - from flexible schedules to more relaxed work attire.

However, the freedom that comes with working from home is joined by some particular challenges. While your home is your sanctuary, the place you relax and spend time with loved ones, it can also be a source of stress and distraction when it becomes your workplace, too. How do you find the right balance between work life, and home life?

How do you make sure you can stay on-task when you need to, and switch off when you’re done for the day?

If you are worried about staying focused and productive when working from home, don’t panic. You are not alone. While this is a new challenge to many workers, there are also many seasoned home workers who have useful expert advice on making the most of your at-home working life.

Time Management

If sticking to a 9-5 pattern works for you, then by all means stick with that. However, working from home means that you have the flexibility to arrange your working day according to the schedule that makes the most sense to your specific working style. What times of day do you feel most focused, creative, or sociable, for example? There’s lots of information about how people’s productivity can be attuned to natural circadian rhythms, which could help you tailor your routine to suit your needs.

Workspace

Creating a working environment that helps you to focus on your work with minimum distractions, is really important. If possible, assign a specific room as your ‘office’ space or, if you don’t have a whole room free, adopt a quiet nook or corner of a room with as little ‘traffic’ as possible. If you can, keep the door closed, or use a ‘do not disturb’ sign to deter human distractions from housemates, partners, and children.

It really helps to establish a consistent work space that you can associate with work, so that you can ‘leave the office’ at the end of your working day, setting a clear boundary to balance work and life at home. Situating yourself by a window to have natural light, and adding a little greenery with a low-maintenance succulent plant, can have a positive impact on your mental health, stress levels, and productivity.

Technology

Wifi is the new bottom line when it comes to the fundamental needs of the modern home office. Whatever field of work you are in, you are going to need a strong and reliable internet connection. This is even more important if you are sharing your connection with another adult working from home, or children who need to get online for their studies. Think about getting a wifi repeater device to boost your signal around the house.

Digital distractions are a major challenge to anyone working online, but especially so when home-working, since it can feel socially isolating working alone. Try to be aware of distractions from messages, notifications, and social media, and consider using time-controlled apps to restrict your exposure to beeps throughout your working day.

Communication

While too much online chatting and scrolling can be a huge time-drain, it is still important to feel connected to other people. Colleagues are often also friends, and checking in with each other can really boost morale, show solidarity in isolation, and feel part of something. Bouncing ideas off and collaborating with other people is great for productivity, too.

Exercise

Although getting out of bed can sometimes feel like an uphill struggle, the commute from bed to home-office desk is hardly a workout. When your job involves sitting at the same chair and focusing on a screen for hours on end, you can start to feel disconnected physically. It’s important to take care of your health, and remember to move around from time to time. Even a brief period of exercise can help get the blood flowing to your brain, sharpen your focus, and refresh your energy.

You could set a timer to remind you to take a little walk or do a short routine of stretches every hour, or set aside a chunk of time to do a proper workout, some yoga, or some light cardio activity. This could be at the beginning or end of the day, or during your lunch break - remember that working from home means that you have the freedom to decide how to spend your time, so don’t forget to make healthy decisions.

Take a look at this smart infographic by Headway Capital for some more useful tips to help you make the most out of your time working from home.

YouTube for Business: Is It Worth It?

$

Unless you've been hiding under a rock, you've undoubtedly heard of YouTube. It's a popular video-sharing platform many people use to watch shows or listen to music. But, did you know you can use it for business, too?

A lot of people capitalize on the site's viewership — which is approximately 2 billion users— to build their companies and their brand. This might have you thinking that it could be useful for your business, too. Chances are, that's true. Let's take a deeper look at the platform and how it works.

How Does It Work?

Businesses, like personal users, have to create an account on the site. The good news is it's free for companies, just like for individuals. That means no immediate out-of-pocket expenses. You'll need to invest in promotional materials, though, such as ads to direct users to your videos. Many people use YouTube as an eCommerce communication tool, and it's one of the most recommended direct-to-consumer trends.

YouTube Strategy

There are multiple ways you can use YouTube to promote a business. The first is one of the most common, by creating video ads. These clips air between videos for free users. They can range from a few seconds to a few minutes long, depending on how long it takes to get your message across. The longer the video, the more it'll cost, but there's good news: you only pay if someone actually watches a minimum of 30 seconds of your video, or if they click on the ad within to visit your company website. This will drive more traffic to your site, but it's not making money directly from YouTube.

Monetizing YouTube

If you're looking to monetize YouTube, you have to use your account to actually create and post videos. This means creating a channel and regularly posting videos to it. They can be short clips or long ones, it's up to you. The more you post, the more chances you have to make money, but you don't want to post just anything. YouTube also has to approve your application to be part of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

Capitalizing on Your Channel

It's important that your channel has a coherent theme. For example, if your business is beauty products, focus your content on that. Create how-to videos showing viewers your products in action. You can also post tutorials, tips and care techniques to further engage your viewers. If you run an informational-type business, then consider making documentaries or educational videos. Animated videos and interviews also do well, it's all about how creative you are and how much you put into it.

Your channel doesn't have to be the main source of income, but it can be a large part of it. There are several ways to earn money on YouTube, including:
  • Premium revenue
  • Advertising
  • Memberships
  • Merchandise
Each of these methods requires meeting specific criteria. For example, to offer memberships to your channel, YouTube requires you have more than 30,000 subscribers. To sell with a merchandise shelf, you need more than 10,000. All of the avenues require that you be 18 or older. Make sure you review all of the terms and conditions before applying, lest you be rejected for not meeting set criteria.

Getting Subscribers

Subscribers are the backbone of your channel, they provide the support you need to grow, and the views you need to make money. Make sure you have a link or an icon leading to your YouTube channel and always promote it in an article, blog or newsletter. The more people know about it, the more chance you have to grow your base.

Another good idea is to engage your subscribers. Interact with them, responding to messages when possible and they're likely to share the channel with their friends and family who may have similar interests. SmartReply is a new feature that makes responding easier. You can set tailored responses to specific topics because let's face it, responding to every message just isn't feasible.

All in all, the platform can prove to be a valuable resource. You just have to know how to put it to work for you. Even if you're a beginner and have never used a camera before, there are plenty of resources to get you started — you can even find videos to teach you on YouTube! Even if you just use it to supplement your business, it can prove to be a valuable resource in growing your company and revenue streams.

Google Is Testing a Security Feature to Make Sure Auto-fill is disabled on Mixed Forms for Chrome 86 To Protect Privacy of Users

The tech giant, Google, is adding a new security update in its Chrome browser to protect the security and privacy of its users. Google Chrome is testing a new setting tag to make sure Autofill is disabled on insecure forms. The new setting tag called ‘Disable Autofill for mixed forms’ will automatically determine the current level of security and privacy when a user activates this setting.

If the Chrome browser detects an unencrypted page, it prevents auto-filling of online forms through credit card purchase. The browser also displays a warning to let users know that Chrome prevented data in the form, from being sent over an insecure connection. However, you can still choose to override the warning and confirm submission.

If you have saved login credentials, credit card data, or contact information to the Chrome browser on HTTPS sites, the browser will autofill the forms. The browser does not autofill the information in forms on HTTP websites, and Google is now going ahead and plans to block forms on HTTPS websites that submit over HTTP websites. The browser warns users that the data in this form is being sent over an insecure connection. This may also expose the data of users when the data is sent to the website.

The Chrome browser (on Mac, Android, Windows, Chrome OS and Linux operating systems) offers the options to ‘Go Back’, as well as ‘Submit Anyways.’ The Go Back option is recommended.

If you want to test the autofill blocking option for insecure forms in Chrome on Android or desktop, launch the Chrome 86 Canary on your device. Now, you need to visit the chrome://flags section. If you will search for ‘mixed form’ keyword you will find these two flags in the search page, ‘Disable autofill for mixed forms’ and ‘Mixed forms interstitial’. Change the Default option to Enabled on both flags and restart your Chrome browser. Now, the flags are enabled.

The Disable autofill for mixed forms flag when enabled, will prevent autofill for mixed forms and will also display a warning bubble over the form. On the other hand, the Mixed forms interstitial flag is an interstitial that contains the insecure form submission warning message. However, pass auto-filling will not be affected by enabling these flags. Developers can also test whether their websites are impacted by the latest version of Chrome Canary. Developers will have to go to the experiment flags page in Chrome and open the ‘Disable Autofill for mixed forms’ hashtags.

For most beginners in cryptocurrency investment, one worry is the instability of these digital currencies. Bitcoin is used as the best example to show how cryptos fluctuate wildly. At the beginning of 2017, for instance, a single bitcoin was valued at $1,000. At the beginning of 2018, the price shot to $20,000 before falling to $5,000 in mid-2018. Such volatility has discouraged many serious investors from the cryptocurrency market.

The USDT crypto falls in the category known as stablecoins. The digital coins are designed to remain valued at US$1 each through the backing of the circulating supply of USDT with fiat currency assets held in reserve. The blockchain/cryptocurrency was developed by Tether, a company based in Hong Kong.

In other words, the Tether USDT is pegged to the US dollar, unlike other ordinary crypto coins. This stablecoin is thus safe from price fluctuations than competing cryptos such as bitcoin and Ethereum.

The Best of Both Worlds

When buying other cryptocurrencies, it’s easy to lose money in a matter of seconds. This is because the price fluctuations are fast and the crypto market is volatile.

USDT crypto coin came about from a collaboration of science and academia to develop a coin that can withstand market movements. The result is a cryptocurrency which offers investors the best of both worlds.

When a customer wants to redeem their cash from USDT, they can sell the coins at many of the cryptocurrency exchanges. Buying this crypto coin is easy using any fiat currency and any other cryptocurrency.

Is Tether USDT the Future of Cryptocurrencies?

Stablecoins such as Tether have stirred the industry by offering more stability in a volatile market. Tether USDT helps digitize the US dollar and make transactions easier, faster, and cheaper on the blockchain.

It is a practical cryptocurrency which makes it a viable investment. Many analysts in the industry see this as the easiest way for cryptocurrencies to go mainstream finally. It has also made Transfer of USD/fiat easier.

Based on market predictions, the Tether (USDT) is a profitable investment. Most forecasts indicate USDT will offer a good return in 3 to 5 years, which makes it a strong long-term investment. If you are after a stable asset to store value in, this is one of the best in the cryptocurrency market.

The social media giant, Facebook, has recently published a bunch of best practices on how marketers can boost engagement with their brand messaging. The Creative Research team of Facebook investigated which creative approaches tend to be successful on the platform in terms of engaging consumers. The company published a new video exploring how seemingly small considerations such as phrasing a title can have a huge difference.

Facebook stated that its research team has discovered that, often, it’s the little things that matter. According to the social media giant’s research team, this is specifically true in the competitive landscape, as marketers seek to tailor their approaches to connect with customers across a wide range of formats as well as platforms.

Although the company published its findings in a video, we will be looking at the key lessons in text format here. These tips are worth noting if you are interested in learning effective ways to enhance the creative of your Facebook campaigns. The research team explored its learning in three different areas including text, timing, and format. They provided actionable guidance on topics like whether to display video overlays and captions or not, when it is the right time to incorporate branding and messaging and how you can structure mixed-format assets.

The insights published by the company can shed some light on common marketing queries such as how you can increase view duration or how advertisers can receive higher ad recall. According to Facebook, you can increase your view duration by an average of around 12 percent by adding captions to video ads, as a decent number of users consume videos without music on.

You should also look into asking questions in your text copy as the Creative Research team suggests that it is associated with a higher conversation lift. Advertisers are recommended to experiment with new ways to make their text copy more engaging for the audience.

The team also suggests that advertisers need to maintain a focal point to provide extra context or highlight key features. Text overlays provide varying results, so it is better to test which methods work best for your creative. Highlighting your brand early as well as clearly can also help you a lot. Facebook further explained that brand association in the first 3 seconds positively correlated to conversion lift. According to lab tests, ads that deliver their messages within the initial 5 seconds result in significantly higher ad recall lift.

The team also found that Facebook campaigns with mixed-formats assets drive improved performance metrics with nearly 86 percent confidence. You can try telling your story via multiple formats to capture the attention of the audience and drive conversations. Using the recommended aspect ratio in the News Feed, and allowing CTA (call to action) button to appear on the screen will enable you to achieve higher direct response results.

Mark Zuckerberg’s sunscreen-covered picture has turned into a new joke of the town

As per NYPost, the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg has recently come in the line of fire of ruthless but hilarious memes. Last week, a picture started making rounds on the social media which showed Mark Zuckerberg enjoying on his electric surfboard on a beach in Hawaii. While there was nothing wrong in the activity, the thing that stirred and stimulated the humorous spirits of the ‘memers’ on the social media was his almost white face, overly covered with sunscreen!

Normally, Zuckerberg is a very decent looking chap, and no one ever makes fun of his looks or appearance. However, his ghost-like white face on the beaches of Hawaii not only became an instant talk of the town, but it also turned into a matter of joke within hours.

People started posting his picture all over the social media and turned it into memes. Some of the memes hilariously depicted him side by side with the ever-famous DC Comics villain, The Joker, which was played by the actor Cesar Romero, especially from a scene where he also was surfing in a TV episode of Batman, the series.

Other users also claimed that Zuckerberg’s sunscreen-laden appearance resembled greatly with a character Data from Star Trek! This was acutely funny because Data does have an uncanny resemblance with Zuckerberg’s white face.

Some people found him quite accurately comparable with the ghost from Spirited Away.

But that is not all! Apparently, Zuckerberg’s picture reminded people of all the characters from Mrs Doubtfire, Halloween, The Island of Doctor Moreau, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Point Break, and many more.

Some people also found his sunscreen-covered face almost equivalent to the ‘crappy’ Michael Myers masks that are found at Party City.

Someone believes that it is Zuckerberg ‘ shedding’ his skin just like reptiles, as it is summertime.

Many more memes are circulating with people comparing Zuckerberg with one character or thing or another. While it is mostly funny and said in good spirits, and does not mean to offend or humiliate Mark Zuckerberg in any way, one should not miss the point that sunscreen usage is highly recommended.

Sunscreen is a great skincare product which not only protects the skin from the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, but it also provides other benefits too. People who are fair-skinned have less Melanin, the component that imparts the brownish color to the skin. People who have lesser melanocytes are at a higher risk of developing various skin conditions due to over-exposure to the sun and its harmful radiations. Therefore, sunscreen is mandatory for these people when they go outside.

Dark-skinned people with excessive melanin are at risk of developing skin cancer due to over-exposure to the sun, so sunscreen is necessary for them as well.

We do not know why Zuckerberg put on his sunscreen so enthusiastically, but regardless of the quantity he used to apply on his face, it still is a good thing and he followed a good routine. Others also should take care of their skin rather than mocking Zuckerberg.

The UK Government Suggests That Single, Universal (Weak) Passwords for Gadgets Should Be Banned

In a newly released policy paper on regulating customer smart-product cybersecurity, Matt Warman MP, the United Kingdom Minister for Digital Information stated that the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport has been working with the NCSC to address the problem of poor IoT (internet-of-things) gadget security. It is expected that making weak passwords for gadgets will be illegal in the next year.

The problem with the Internet of Insecure Things is the thorn in the side of cybersecurity researchers ever since the IoT first became a trend. According to predictions, there will be nearly 41 billion IoT devices by the year 2025, and the scale of security problems is growing. Everything from light bulbs to smart speakers, security cameras, and televisions, all sit inside this often insecure ecosystem of IoT devices.

Hackers use these devices to spy on people and steal their data. They are insecure because most of these devices come with pre-loaded, hard-wired, passwords that you cannot change. If those passwords were at least strong or unique, there would not have been many security issues.

Even where customers can change passwords, they often do not change them as the gadgets are sold as being fire and forget, easy to use non-tech gizmos. Gadgets that connect to the internet via the home network, there is a possibility that hackers could already know the passwords, or easily crack those passwords.

Internet of Things devices is also often corralled into botnets by hackers that are then used to execute DDoS attacks against online businesses. The policy paper ‘Proposals for regulating consumer smart-product cybersecurity - call for views,’ was released on July 16.

The UK government suggests that single. Universal password for devices should be made illegal, and the government wants to move towards the use of alternative authorization techniques that do not use passwords. According to the policy paper, the government also plans to ban those passwords that are unique to every gadget, however, they can still easily be guessed.

The policy paper claims that where pre-installed passwords that unique to every device are used, they cannot be created by a system that does not take into account the minimization of automated hacks. It is also recommended that manufacturers will have to provide a mechanism for consumers to easily report security vulnerabilities, and the paper also requires more transparency on how long the gadget will continue to receive security updates.

If these requirements become law, the potential for financial penalties is expected to enforce them. Cybersecurity experts state that strong enforcement of password standards is positive more, and the benefits outweigh the difficulty of shipping gadgets with unique passwords. Vice-president at Tripwire, Tim Erlin, stated that there is no technical reason why device manufacturers need to ship gadgets with a common default password.

Researchers Have Developed an AI Algorithm That Allows Drone Swarms Fly Through Crowded and Unmapped Environments

You probably have seen a drone swarm televised during a New Year’s celebration. A drone swarm occurs when several drones fly in sync, and they frequently fly outside because it is challenging for the flying robots to navigate in tighter environments without hitting each other. Now, it seems that researchers at Caltech may have a way for these flying robots to fly indoors.

Caltech engineers have designed a new machine-learning algorithm to control the movement of several flying robots through cluttered, unmapped spaces, so these drones do not run into environmental obstacles or each other. The new machine-learning algorithm is called GLAS (Global-to-Local Safe Autonomy Synthesis), and the system works by providing each flying robot a degree of independence that allows it to adapt to a changing environment.

Typical swarm navigation models work by relying on existing maps of a specific area or the routes of other drones in the swarm. However, Global-to-Local Safe Autonomy Synthesis has each robot learning how to fly a given space on its own even as it coordinates with other machines. The new decentralized system helps the robots to improvise. It also makes scaling the drone swarm easier, as the computing is spread across several flying robots.

While the main machine learning allows the drones to navigate their environment, and an additional tracking controller known as Neural-Swarm helps the flying robots compensate for aerodynamic interactions, such as the downward force of air coming from machine flying overhead. The new system is more sophisticated as compared to many controllers available as they do not account for aerodynamics.

Drone swarms are mostly used for entertainment, however, they are just too helpful and too versatile to be only used for drone light shows. Drone swarms could actually help with more vital operations. There is another field which will certainly see improvements with the new model- Search and rescue. For instance, using the new software, first responders could deploy a drone swarm to quickly as well as efficiently cover an area.

Moreover, the new program could be helpful in areas that do not include flying a robot. For example, we could integrate the new tech into self-driving cars which will help us to avoid traffic jams and collisions. If the technology is included in every car, cars will be able to interact with each other and adjust accordingly to avoid traffic jams or crashes. It may take several years before programs like GLAS are implemented into real-world swarms.
